Association among cultural orientation, Nunchi, and interpersonal relationships with Korean adolescent athletes

Cultural aspects and their relationships with social supporters are important to adolescent athletes. Other skills in communication or perception (e.g. Nunchi) might be helpful in getting along with the supporters. The purpose of this study was to identify the association between cultural orientation, Nunchi, and interpersonal relationships with adolescent athletes. With this aim, we surveyed 462 Korean adolescent athletes. Measurement tools comprised questionnaires on cultural orientation, Nunchi, and interpersonal relationships-including coach-athlete, sports friendships, and parent-adolescent-designed to match the research purpose. We analyzed the data using structural equation modeling. Our results are as follows: first, we verified that collectivism is positively related to Nunchi, and Nunchi is positively associated with interpersonal relationships. But we did not verify that individualism is related to Nunchi. Second, in our final model, excluding individualism, Nunchi showed a mediation effect on the association between collectivism and interpersonal relationships. In conclusion, Korean athletes with high collectivism will be positively related to interpersonal relationships through Nunchi. Additionally, we discussed the issues of culture in sport and exercise psychology.Los aspectos culturales y sus relaciones con los seguidores deportivos son importantes para los atletas adolescentes. Otras habilidades de comunicación o percepción (e.g., Nunchi) pueden ser útiles para llevarse bien con los hinchas. El propósito de este estudio fue identificar la asociación entre la orientación cultural, Nunchi, y las relaciones interpersonales con atletas adolescentes. Con este objetivo, hemos encuestado a 462 atletas adolescentes coreanos. Las herramientas de medición comprendían cuestionarios sobre orientación cultural, Nunchi y relaciones interpersonales -incluidos el entrenador-atleta, las amistades deportivas y los padres-adolescentes- diseñados para cumplir con el propósito de la investigación. Los datos se analizaron mediante el uso de modelos de ecuaciones estructurales. Nuestros resultados son los siguientes: primero, verificamos que el colectivismo está positivamente relacionado con Nunchi, y que Nunchi está positivamente asociado con las relaciones interpersonales. Pero no verificamos que el individualismo esté relacionado con Nunchi. En segundo lugar, en nuestro modelo final, excluyendo el individualismo, Nunchi mostró un efecto de mediación sobre la asociación entre colectivismo y relaciones interpersonales. En conclusión, los atletas coreanos con alto colectivismo estarán positivamente relacionados con las relaciones interpersonales a través de Nunchi. Square-Stepping Exercise Program Effects on Fall-Related Fitness and BDNF Levels in Older Adults in Korea: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The risk of dementia increases with age. To mitigate this risk, we examined the effect of a square-stepping exercise (SSE) program on fall-related fitness and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Twenty older adults in Korea were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group (each group n = 10). Participants performed SSE for 70 min per session, twice a week, for 12 weeks with a certified instructor. The average age of the participants was 74.80 ± 6.763 years in the exercise group and 72.50 ± 6.519 years in the control group. The experiment group showed significant improvement (p < 0.01) in the lower muscle strength post-intervention. The paired t-test revealed a significant improvement (p < 0.01) in the experimental group and a significant difference in the interaction effect (p < 0.01) in the BDNF levels. There was a significant improvement (p < 0.05) in the BDNF levels in the experimental group and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the control group. The SSE program had a positive effect on fall-related fitness and BDNF levels

Sponge behaviors of functionalized few-walled carbon nanotubes

Few-walled carbon nanotube (FWCNT) was functionalized with two different natures of functional groups in a mild poly(phosphoric acid) (PPA)/phosphorus pentoxide (P(2)O(5)). The one is less polar 4-ethylbenzoyl-functionalized FWCNT (EB-FWCNT) and the other is more polar 4-(aminomethyl)benzoyl-functionalized FWCNT (AB-FWCNT). The degrees of their functionalities were estimated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and they had one functional group per average 17.7 and 25.3 carbon atoms, respectively. Contrary to expectation, the amount of bound water in the EB-FWCNT was 96.6 wt % and it is higher than that for AB-FWCNT (82.3 wt %). The unusual sponge behavior of EB-FWCNT is attributed to higher hydration energy as determined based on molecular simulation studies. The electrochemical behaviors are also greatly different between the EB- and AB-FWCNT.close2

Energy landscape scheme for an intuitive understanding of complex domain dynamics in ferroelectric thin films

Fundamental understanding of domain dynamics in ferroic materials has been a longstanding issue because of its relevance to many systems and to the design of nanoscale domain-wall devices. Despite many theoretical and experimental studies, a full understanding of domain dynamics still remains incomplete, partly due to complex interactions between domain-walls and disorder. We report domain-shape-preserving deterministic domain-wall motion, which directly confirms microscopic return point memory, by observing domain-wall breathing motion in ferroelectric BiFeO3 thin film using stroboscopic piezoresponse force microscopy. Spatial energy landscape that provides new insights into domain dynamics is also mapped based on the breathing motion of domain walls. The evolution of complex domain structure can be understood by the process of occupying the lowest available energy states of polarization in the energy landscape which is determined by defect-induced internal fields. Our result highlights a pathway for the novel design of ferroelectric domain-wall devices through the engineering of energy landscape using defect-induced internal fields such as flexoelectric fields1231sciescopu

Treponema denticola 면역억제 단백질이 T 세포의 cytokine 발현에 미치는 영향

감염근관내 spirochetes의 존재 유무에 대한 논란이 많았으나 최근 PCR을 사용한 세균검출 실험에서 Treponema denticola 균주가 감염근관의 50%이상의 경우에서 발견됨에 따라 이 세균이 치수 및 치근단 질환의 병인과정에 관여하는 지에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 이와 관련하여 Shenker 등이 T. denticola의 sonicated extract에서 순수분리된 면역억제 단백질 (immunoinhibitory protein)이 T 임파구의 proliferation을 방해함을 보고한 바 있다. 하지만 이 세균성 단백질이 T 임파구의 기능에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지에 대한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 T. denticola의 면역억제 단백질이 처리되기 전과 후의 T 세포에서 분비되는 cytokine Interleukine-2와 Interleukine-4의 발현 정도를 비교하여 그 작용기전을 밝히는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. Treponema denticola LL2513를 혐기성 상태에서 TYGVS 배지에 배양한 다음 PBS 세척과 lyophilize 과정을 거친 후 sonication을 시행한다. 이 과정을 거쳐 추출된 상층액이 T. denticola의 면역억제 단백질인 sonicated extract이다. 실험을 위해 건강한 혈액 공여자로부터 T 세포를 Buoyant density 방법으로 추출해 낸 다음 24-well plate에 100만개의 세포를 주입한 다음 Group 1에는 2% FBS의 medium만으로 배양하고, Group 2에는 100 l의 PHA로만 증식 자극을 하였고, Group 3에는 PHA처리 전 sonicated extract로 T세포를 자극하였다. 72시간 동안 배양한 다음 상층액을 추출하여 ELISA assay를 사용하여 IL-2와 IL-4의 발현정도를 측정하였다. PHA로 자극받은 Group 2에서는 IL-2와 IL-4가 대조군인 Group 1에서보다 높은 수준으로 발현되었다. 하지만 12.5㎍/㎖의 T. denticola sonicated 추출물로 전처리한 Group 3에서는 IL-2와 IL-4의 수준이 유의성있게 억제되어 발현되었다 (p < 0.05). 이러한 결과를 통하여 T. denticola에서 추출된 면역억제 단백질이 Th1과 Th2의 cytokine 분비 기능을 억제하는 것으로 확인 되었으며 이 기전이 감염 근관에서 발견되는 T. denticola의 치수 및 치근단 질환에 대한 병인기전과 관련이 있는 것으로 사료된다. To study in detail about the effect of this microorganism on the function of lymphocytes. we investigated the levels of Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and Interleukin-4 (IL-4) production by T lymphocytes before and after the addition of 12.5㎍/㎖T. denticola sonicated extracts. In this study. levels of IL-2 and IL-4 produced from T cells pretreated with sonicated extracts were evaluated by using the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. In response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) stimulation. T cell produced increased levels of IL-2 and IL-4. However. the expressions of both cytokines were significantly inhibited when PHA activated-T cells were pre-exposed to sonicated T. denticola extracts (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the T. denticola sonicated extracts induced-immunosuppression in Th1 and Th2 cell functions could be a part of the pathogenic mechanism of the endodontic failure associated with this microorganism

Single walled carbon nanotube-based electrical biosensor for the label-free detection of pathogenic bacteria

We herein describe the development of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-based electrical biosensor consisting of a two-terminal resistor, and report its use for the specific, label-free detection of pathogenic bacteria via changes in conductance. The ability of this biosensor to recognize different pathogenic bacteria was analyzed, and conditions were optimized with different probe concentrations. Using this system, the reference strains and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were successfully detected; in both cases, the sensor showed a detection limit of 10 CFU. This SWNT-based electrical biosensor will prove useful for the development of highly sensitive and specific handheld pathogen detectors
