    In questa sede vengono prese in esame tre iscrizioni con dedica al Deus Sol provenienti da Calceus Herculis, presidio militare numida, posto a controllo della gola di El-Kantara, sul versante occidentale dell’Aurasius mons. Le dediche poste da prepositi numeri Hemesenorum sotto i primi Severi mostrano in realtà l’attaccamento dei soldati del reparto siriano al loro dio patrio: Elagabalus. Tale documentazione ricostruisce insieme ai tituli coevi provenienti da Roma e da Intercisa (Pannonia Inferior) un quadro unitario, che mostra l’imperatrice Giulia Domna, originaria di Emesa e figlia del gran sacerdote del Deus Sol Elagabalus Giulio Bassiano, adoperarsi a favore della propagazione del culto in occidente.Here we examine three inscriptions dedicated to Deus Sol from Calceus Herculis,a Numidian garrison, placed to control the gorge of El-Kantara, on the western side of the Aurasius mons.     Drosophila melanogaster gene tan was originally discovered in the early 20th century as a mutant strain lacking the dark pi gment pattern of wild-type (wt) f lies and, therefore, showing a light yellowish brown color (McEwen, 1918). Flies lack ing Tan function also exhibited abnormalities in vision (Benzer, 1967; Inoue et al. , 1988; True et al. , 2005), and tan males displayed an abnormal courtship behavior (Cook, 1980; Tomkins et al. , 1982). tan 1 ( t 1 ) and tan 3 ( t 3 ) alleles were found as spontaneous mutations, t 3 mutant being apparently lighter than t 1 (Brehme, 1941). tan is the structural gene for N- β -alanyldopamine hydrolase (NBAD-hydrolase or Tan protein), the enzyme that generates dopamine (DA) from NBAD (Wright, 1987; True et al. , 2005). Tan is expressed as a precursor protein of 43.7 kDa. Th is precursor is clea ved into two subunits of 29.9 and 13.8 kDa that apparently conform together a he terodimeric active protein (Wagner et al. , 2007). The enzyme that generates NBAD from DA, th e opposite reaction to the one catalyzed by Tan, is the NBAD-synthase or E bony protein (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al ., 1997), which is codified by the gene ebony . Since both Tan and Ebony ar e involved in cuticle tanni ng, carcinine re gulation, and NBAD metabolism in nervous tissue (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al. , 1997, 2004; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; True et al. , 2005), it has been suggested that they function together in a system regulating the levels of dopamine during cuticle sclerotization a nd histamine in the visual metabolism (Borycz et al. , 2002; Pérez et al. , 2010). During the last few years, several publicati ons appeared regarding NBAD-synthase (Wappner et al ., 1996a, b; Pérez et al ., 1997, 2002, 2004, 2010; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; Wittkopp et al., 2002; Schachter et al ., 2007), but very little is known about tan (True et al. , 2005; Wagner et al. , 2007).     Counterfactual distributions in bivariate models : A conditional quantile approach

    This paper proposes a methodology to incorporate bivariate models in numerical computations of counterfactual distributions. The proposal is to extend the works of Machado and Mata (2005) and Melly (2005) using the grid method to generate pairs of random variables. This contribution allows incorporating the effect of intra-household decision making in counterfactual decompositions of changes in income distribution. An application using data from five latin american countries shows that this approach substantially improves the goodness of fit to the empirical distribution. However, the exercise of decomposition is less conclusive about the performance of the method, which essentially depends on the sample size and the accuracy of the regression model.Facultad de Ciencias Económica

    Seismic and Newtonian Noise in the GW Detectors

    Gravitational wave detectors aim to measure relative length variations of the order of ΔL/L≃10−21, or less. Thus, any mechanism that is able to reproduce such a tiny variation can, in principle, threaten the sensitivity of these instruments, representing a source of noise. There are many examples of such noise, and seismic and Newtonian noise are among these and will be the subject of this review. Seismic noise is generated by the incessant ground vibration that characterizes Earth. Newtonian noise is instead produced by the tiny fluctuations of the Earth's gravitational field. These fluctuations are generated by variations of air and soil density near the detector test masses. Soil density variations are produced by the same seismic waves comprising seismic noise. Thus, it makes sense to address these two sources of noise in the same review. An overview of seismic and Newtonian noise is presented, together with a review of the strategies adopted to mitigate them

    Distributive Implications of Fertility Changes in Latin America

    Fertility rates significantly fell over the last decades in Latin America. In order to assess the extent to which these changes contributed to the observed reduction in income poverty and inequality we apply microeconometric decompositions to microdata from national household surveys from seven Latin American countries. We find that changes in fertility rates were associated to a non-negligible reduction in inequality and poverty in the region. The main channel was straightforward: lower fertility implied smaller families and hence larger per capita incomes. Lower fertility also fostered labor force participation, especially among women, which contributed to the reduction of poverty and inequality in most countries, although the size of this effect was smaller.Centro de Estudios Distributivos, Laborales y Sociales (CEDLAS

    Distinguishing between dark-matter interactions with gravitational-wave detectors

    Ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers could directly probe the existence of ultralight dark matter (O(10141011)\mathcal{O}(10^{-14}-10^{-11}) eV/c2c^2) that couples to standard-model particles in the detectors. Recently, many techniques have been developed to extract a variety of potential dark-matter signals from noisy gravitational-wave data; however, little effort has gone into ways to distinguish between types of dark matter that could directly interact with the interferometers. In this work, we employ the Wiener filter to follow-up candidate dark-matter interaction signals. The filter captures the stochastic nature of these signals, and, in simulations, successfully identifies which type of dark matter interacts with the interferometers. We apply the Wiener filter to outliers that remained in the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA search for dark photons in data from the most recent observing (O3), and show that they are consistent with noise disturbances. Our proof-of-concept analysis demonstrates that the Wiener filter can be a powerful technique to confirm or deny the presence of dark-matter interaction signals in gravitational-wave data, and distinguish between scalar and vector dark-matter interactions.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Female Labor Force Participation in Latin America: Evidence of Deceleration

    This paper documents changes in female labor force participation (LFP) in Latin America exploiting a large database of microdata from household surveys of 15 countries in the period 1992-2012. We find evidence for a significant deceleration in the rate of increase of female LFP in the 2000s, breaking the marked increasing pattern that characterized the region for at least 50 years. The paper documents and characterizes this fact and examines various factors that could be driving the deceleration. Through a set of simple decompositions the paper helps to disentangle whether the patterns in female LFP are mainly accounted for by changes in the distribution of some direct determinants of the labor supply decision (e.g. education), or instead they are chiefly the consequence of some more profound transformation in behavior.Centro de Estudios Distributivos, Laborales y Sociales (CEDLAS
