Inequality Indexes as Sparsity Measures Applied to Ventricular Ectopic Beats Detection and its Efficient Hardware Implementation
Meeting application requirements under a tight power budget is of a primary importance to enable connected health internet of things applications. This paper considers using sparse representation and well-defined inequality indexes drawn from the theory of inequality to distinguish ventricular ectopic beats (VEBs) from non-VEBs. Our approach involves designing a separate dictionary for each arrhythmia class using a set of labeled training QRS complexes. Sparse representation, based on the designed dictionaries of each new test QRS complex is then calculated. Following this, its class is predicted using the winner-takes-all principle by selecting the class with the highest inequality index. The experiments showed promising results ranging between 80% and 100% for the detection of VEBs considering the patient-specific approach, 80% using cross validation and 70% on unseen data using independent sets for training and testing, respectively. An efficient hardware implementation of the alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm is also presented. The results show that the proposed hardware implementation can classify a QRS complex in 69.3 ms that use only 0.934 W energy
The causal relationship between trade openness and economic growth of Algeria in the period 1990-2018 using causality Toda Yamamoto (TYDL)
The study aimed to test the long-term causal relationship between trade openness and economic growth using the TYDL methodology for the case of Algeria during the period 1990-2018, and to achieve this goal annual data were obtained for both the open trade (Open) variable and the economic growth variable (Cro), and by following Methodological steps (TYDL), which mainly depend on the test of the WALD of the enlarged (MWALD). The study found that there is a causal relationship in one direction only from the trade openness towards economic growth and the absence of the causal relationship in the opposite direction. On the other hand, the study concluded that the economic growth of Algeria does not it benefits greatly from trade openness in light of the unitary export
Analysis of the ECG signal using SVD-based parametric modelling technique
A new parametric modeling technique for the analysis of the ECG signal is presented in
this paper. This approach involves the projection of the excitation signal on the right
eigenvectors of the impulse response matrix of the LPC filter. Each projected value is
then weighted by the corresponding singular value, leading to an approximated sum of
exponentially damped sinusoids (EDS). A two-stage procedure is then used to estimate
the EDS model parameters. Prony's algorithm is first used to obtain initial estimates of
the model, while the Gauss-Newton method is applied to solve the non-linear least-square
optimisation problem. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated on abnormal
clinical ECG data selected from the MIT-BIH database using objective measures of
distortion. A good compression ratio per beat has been obtained using the proposed
algorithm which is quite satisfactory when compared to other techniques
Classification of retinal images based on statistical moments and principal component analysis
Early diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) has been suggested as a good measure of preventing blindness associated with Diabetes. Some of the reported methodologies of Retinal Images (RI) classification for early diagnosis of DR have been shown to involve several steps and approaches for effective and accurate diagnosis. Thus, this paper investigates the classification of RI using a two-stage procedure. The first stage includes the extraction of blood vessels from RI belonging to healthy and diabetes retinal images using a modified local entropy thresholding algorithm. In the second stage, different features are extracted including statistical moments and principal components. The set of extracted features is combined into one feature vector and fed into a Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) classifier. The obtained result is encouraging with an average accuracy of 68.33 %
