Neutrino Physics and Nuclear Axial Two-Body Interactions
We consider the counter-term describing isoscalar axial two-body currents in
the nucleon-nucleon interaction, L1A, in the effective field theory approach.
We determine this quantity using the solar neutrino data. We investigate the

Absolute Calibration of the Radio Astronomy Flux Density Scale at 22 to 43 GHz Using Planck
The Planck mission detected thousands of extragalactic radio sources at
frequencies from 28 to 857 GHz. Planck's calibration is absolute (in the sense
that it is based on the satellite's annual motion around the Sun and the
temperature of the cosmic microwave background), and its beams are well
characterized at sub-percent levels. Thus Planck's flux density measurements of
compact sources are absolute in the same sense. We have made coordinated VLA
and ATCA observations of 65 strong, unresolved Planck sources in order to
transfer Planck's calibration to ground-based instruments at 22, 28, and 43
GHz. The results are compared to microwave flux density scales currently based
on planetary observations. Despite the scatter introduced by the variability of
many of the sources, the flux density scales are determined to 1-2% accuracy.
At 28 GHz, the flux density scale used by the VLA runs 3.6% +- 1.0% below
Planck values; at 43 GHz, the discrepancy increases to 6.2% +- 1.4% for both

Software fault-freeness and reliability predictions
Many software development practices aim at ensuring that software is correct, or fault-free. In safety critical applications, requirements are in terms of probabilities of certain behaviours, e.g. as associated to the Safety Integrity Levels of IEC 61508. The two forms of reasoning - about evidence of correctness and about probabilities of certain failures -are rarely brought together explicitly. The desirability of using claims of correctness has been argued by many authors, but not been taken up in practice. We address how to combine evidence concerning probability of failure together with evidence pertaining to likelihood of fault-freeness, in a Bayesian framework. We present novel results to make this approach practical, by guaranteeing reliability predictions that are conservative (err on the side of pessimism), despite the difficulty of stating prior probability distributions for reliability parameters. This approach seems suitable for practical application to assessment of certain classes of safety critical systems
Exploring Io's atmospheric composition with APEX: first measurement of 34SO2 and tentative detection of KCl
The composition of Io's tenuous atmosphere is poorly constrained. Only the
major species SO2 and a handful of minor species have been positively
identified, but a variety of other molecular species should be present, based
on thermochemical equilibrium models of volcanic gas chemistry and the
composition of Io's environment. This paper focuses on the spectral search for
expected yet undetected molecular species (KCl, SiO, S2O) and isotopes (34SO2).
We analyze a disk-averaged spectrum of a potentially line-rich spectral window
around 345 GHz, obtained in 2010 at the APEX-12m antenna (Atacama Pathfinder
EXperiment). Using different models assuming either extended atmospheric
distributions or a purely volcanically-sustained atmosphere, we tentatively
measure the KCl relative abundance with respect to SO2 and derive a range of
4x10^{-4}-8x10^{-3}. We do not detect SiO or S2O and present new upper limits
on their abundances. We also present the first measurement of the 34S/32S
isotopic ratio in gas phase on Io, which appears to be twice as high as the
Earth and ISM reference values. Strong lines of SO2 and SO are also analyzed to
check for longitudinal variations of column density and relative abundance. Our
models show that, based on their predicted relative abundance with respect to
SO2 in volcanic plumes, both the tentative KCl detection and SiO upper limit
are compatible with a purely volcanic origin for these species.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 11 pages, 4 figure
Analytical description of ballistic spin currents and torques in magnetic tunnel junctions
In this work we demonstrate explicit analytical expressions for both charge
and spin currents which constitute the 2x2 spinor in magnetic tunnel junctions
with noncollinear magnetizations under applied voltage. The calculations have
been performed within the free electron model in the framework of the Keldysh
formalism and WKB approximation. We demonstrate that spin/charge currents and
spin transfer torques are all explicitly expressed through only three
irreducible quantities, without further approximations. The conditions and
mechanisms of deviation from the conventional sine angular dependence of both
spin currents and torques are shown and discussed. It is shown in the thick
barrier approximation that all tunneling transport quantities can be expressed
in an extremely simplified form via Slonczewski spin polarizations and our
effective spin averaged interfacial transmission probabilities and effective
out-of-plane polarizations at both interfaces. It is proven that the latter
plays a key role in the emergence of perpendicular spin torque as well as in
the angular dependence character of all spin and charge transport considered.
It is demonstrated directly also that for any applied voltage, the parallel
component of spin current at the FM/I interface is expressed via collinear
longitudinal spin current components. Finally, spin transfer torque behavior is
analyzed in a view of transverse characteristic length scales for spin

A Bayesian approach to the estimation of maps between riemannian manifolds
Let \Theta be a smooth compact oriented manifold without boundary, embedded
in a euclidean space and let \gamma be a smooth map \Theta into a riemannian
manifold \Lambda. An unknown state \theta \in \Theta is observed via
X=\theta+\epsilon \xi where \epsilon>0 is a small parameter and \xi is a white
Gaussian noise. For a given smooth prior on \Theta and smooth estimator g of
the map \gamma we derive a second-order asymptotic expansion for the related
Bayesian risk. The calculation involves the geometry of the underlying spaces
\Theta and \Lambda, in particular, the integration-by-parts formula. Using this
result, a second-order minimax estimator of \gamma is found based on the modern

A MERLIN Observation of PSR B1951+32 and its associated Plerion
In an investigative 16 hour L band observation using the MERLIN radio
interferometric array, we have resolved both the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and
structure within the flat spectral radio continuum region, believed to be the
synchrotron nebula associated with the interaction of the pulsar and its `host'
supernova remnant CTB 80. The extended structure we see, significant at
4.5 , is of dimensions 2.5" 0.75", and suggests a sharp bow
shaped arc of shocked emission, which is correlated with similar structure
observed in lower resolution radio maps and X-ray images. Using this MERLIN
data as a new astrometric reference for other multiwavelength data we can place
the pulsar at one edge of the HST reported optical synchrotron knot, ruling out
previous suggested optical counterparts, and allowing an elementary analysis of
the optical synchrotron emission which appears to trail the pulsar. The latter
is possibly a consequence of pulsar wind replenishment, and we suggest that the
knot is a result of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. These being so, it
suggests a dynamical nature to the optical knot, which will require high

Indices for the identification of biologically productive cashmere goats within farms
Objectively comparing cashmere goats with different cashmere production, mean fibre diameter (MFD) and staple length (SL) is difficult for farmers. We aimed to develop indices to enable cashmere producers to identify productive goats within their own farms once adjustments had been made for the primary determinants of cashmere production. That is we aimed to develop indices that identify goats and herds that biologically have a high fleece weight in relation to MFD and SL. We used a sample of 1244 commercial cashmere fleeces from goats originating from many Australian farms based in different environmental zones and a previously developed general linear model that related the logarithm of clean cashmere production (CCMwt) and any other potential determinant. In the present study, sub-models were investigated in order to develop new indices for comparing goats in the same farm, based on fleece characteristics and biological efficiency. New Index (MFD), equal to 6.02×CCMwt/1.1531MFD, was developed to identify animals of biologically high CCMwt in relation to their MFD. Unlike previously reported results that MFD is not a useful measurement for comparing the biological efficiency of cashmere goats across farms, the New Index (MFD) allows comparison of the biological efficiency of cashmere goats within farms. New Index (SL), equal to 2.70 × CCMwt/1.1414SL, was developed to identify animals of biologically high CCMwt in relation to their SL. New Index (SL) is very similar to the Clean Cashmere Staple Length Index (CCSLI) that had been previously reported for comparison of cashmere goats across farms, and thus the CCSLI can be usefully used for comparing the biological efficiency of cashmere goats both across and within farms. New Index MFD, SL = 8.90 × CCMwt/1.243(MFD+SL)/2 was developed to identify animals of biologically high CCMwt in relation to both their MFD and SL within farms, and provides useful information above using either New Index (MFD) or CCSLI. The indices can be presented in the same measurement units as fleece weight, which is a biological concept easily understood by cashmere producers, and enable comparisons to be made between animals using just one attribute, clean cashmere weight
