The southern dust pillars of the Carina Nebula
We present preliminary results from a detailed study towards four previously
detected bright mid-infrared sources in the southern part of the Carina Nebula:
G287.73--0.92, G287.84--0.82, G287.93--0.99 and G288.07--0.80. All of these
sources are located at the heads of giant dust pillars that point towards the
nearby massive star cluster, Trumpler 16. It is unclear if these pillars are
the prime sites for a new generation of triggered star formation or if instead
they are the only remaining parts of the nebula where ongoing star fromation
can take place.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in the proceedings of "Hot Star Workshop III: The

Vibrations of closed-shell Lennard-Jones icosahedral and cuboctahedral clusters and their effect on the cluster ground state energy
Vibrational spectra of closed shell Lennard-Jones icosahedral and
cuboctahedral clusters are calculated for shell numbers between 2 and 9.
Evolution of the vibrational density of states with the cluster shell number is
examined and differences between icosahedral and cuboctahedral clusters
described. This enabled a quantum calculation of quantum ground state energies
of the clusters in the quasiharmonic approximation and a comparison of the
differences between the two types of clusters. It is demonstrated that in the
quantum treatment, the closed shell icosahedral clusters binding energies
differ from those of cuboctahedral clusters more than is the case in classical
treatment
Soft versus Hard Dynamics for Field-driven Solid-on-Solid Interfaces
Analytical arguments and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations show that the
microstructure of field-driven Solid-on-Solid interfaces depends strongly on
the dynamics. For nonconservative dynamics with transition rates that factorize
into parts dependent only on the changes in interaction energy and field
energy, respectively (soft dynamics), the intrinsic interface width is
field-independent. For non-factorizing rates, such as the standard Glauber and
Metropolis algorithms (hard dynamics), it increases with the field.
Consequences for the interface velocity and its anisotropy are discussed.Comment: 9 pages LaTex with imbedded .eps figs. Minor revision
Suppression of Octahedral Tilts and Associated Changes of Electronic Properties at Epitaxial Oxide Heterostructure Interfaces
Epitaxial oxide interfaces with broken translational symmetry have emerged as
a central paradigm behind the novel behaviors of oxide superlattices. Here, we
use scanning transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate a direct,
quantitative unit-cell-by-unit-cell mapping of lattice parameters and oxygen
octahedral rotations across the BiFeO3-La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 interface to elucidate
how the change of crystal symmetry is accommodated. Combined with low-loss
electron energy loss spectroscopy imaging, we demonstrate a mesoscopic
antiferrodistortive phase transition and elucidate associated changes in
electronic properties in a thin layer directly adjacent to the interface
Sine-Gordon description of the scaling three-state Potts antiferromagnet on the square lattice
The scaling limit as T->0 of the antiferromagnetic three-state Potts model on
the square lattice is described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory at a
specific value of the coupling. We show that the correspondence follows
unambigously from an analysis of the sine-Gordon operator space based on
locality, and that the scalar operators carrying solitonic charge play an
essential role in the description of the lattice model. We then evaluate the
correlation functions within the form factor approach and give a number of
universal predictions that can be checked in numerical simulations.Comment: 10 pages, late
On the non-ergodicity of the Swendsen-Wang-Kotecky algorithm on the kagome lattice
We study the properties of the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecky cluster Monte Carlo
algorithm for simulating the 3-state kagome-lattice Potts antiferromagnet at
zero temperature. We prove that this algorithm is not ergodic for symmetric
subsets of the kagome lattice with fully periodic boundary conditions: given an
initial configuration, not all configurations are accessible via Monte Carlo
steps. The same conclusion holds for single-site dynamics.Comment: Latex2e. 22 pages. Contains 11 figures using pstricks package. Uses

Finding co-solvers on Twitter, with a little help from Linked Data
In this paper we propose a method for suggesting potential collaborators for solving innovation challenges online, based on their competence, similarity of interests and social proximity with the user. We rely on Linked Data to derive a measure of semantic relatedness that we use to enrich both user profiles and innovation problems with additional relevant topics, thereby improving the performance of co-solver recommendation. We evaluate this approach against state of the art methods for query enrichment based on the distribution of topics in user profiles, and demonstrate its usefulness in recommending collaborators that are both complementary in competence and compatible with the user. Our experiments are grounded using data from the social networking service Twitter.com
