    A Research and Strategy of Remote Sensing Image Denoising Algorithms

    Most raw data download from satellites are useless, resulting in transmission waste, one solution is to process data directly on satellites, then only transmit the processed results to the ground. Image processing is the main data processing on satellites, in this paper, we focus on image denoising which is the basic image processing. There are many high-performance denoising approaches at present, however, most of them rely on advanced computing resources or rich images on the ground. Considering the limited computing resources of satellites and the characteristics of remote sensing images, we do some research on these high-performance ground image denoising approaches and compare them in simulation experiments to analyze whether they are suitable for satellites.     Human settlement of the last glaciation on the Tibetan plateau

    An archaeological site with 19 handprints and footprints of Homo sapiens and the remnant of a fireplace have been found on hot spring travertine at an elevation of 4200 m on the Tibetan plateau. The prints were pressed on soft travertine by humans. The age of the prints and fireplace is estimated to be around 20,000 years using the optically stimulated luminescence method. The result suggests that humans came to the plateau much earlier than was previously thought. This evidence of human settlement implies that the Tibetans occupy high plateau much earlier than the Andeans and the ice sheet did not cover the entire Tibetan plateau during the Last Glacial Maximum.published_or_final_versio

    A pivotal role for NF-κB in the macrophage inflammatory response to the myeloperoxidase oxidant hypothiocyanous acid

Atherosclerosis is characterised by the infiltration of macrophages at sites of inflammation within the vessel wall and the release of myeloperoxidase (MPO), which forms hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypothiocyanous acid (HOSCN). HOCl is a damaging oxidant implicated in the development of atherosclerosis. Preferential formation of HOSCN occurs under conditions where thiocyanate ions are elevated, as is the case in smokers. HOSCN reacts selectively with thiols, which can result in more enzyme inactivation and damage than HOCl at susceptible sites, which may contribute to atherosclerosis in smokers. In this study, we show that exposure of macrophages to HOSCN results in a time- and dose-dependent increase in the mRNA expression and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, including monocyte chemotactic protein 1, tumour necrosis factor alpha, and interleukins 6, 8 and 1β. At high oxidant concentrations (>200 μM), a significant loss of cellular thiols and increased cell death is observed. HOSCN-induced cytokine/chemokine expression and cell death were decreased on pharmacological inhibition of nuclear factor kappa B. These data highlight a pathway by which HOSCN could promote inflammation and the development of atherosclerosis, in the presence of supra-physiological levels of the precursor thiocyanate, which are achievable by cigarette smoking

    Precipitation chemistry of Lhasa and other remote towns, Tibet

    Precipitation event samples during 1987-1988 field expedition periods and 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 have been collected at Lhasa, Dingri, Dangxiong and Amdo, Tibet. The sampling and analysis were based on WMO recommendations for a background network with some modifications according to local conditions and environmental characteristics. The following precipitation constituents and related parameters were measured: pH, conductivity, CO2 partial pressure, total suspended particles, and the content of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe, Mn, NH4 +, Cl-, NO2 -, NO3 -, SO4 2-Br-, HCO3 - and HPO4 2-. Some atmospheric dust samples have also been collected. Over 300 precipitation events have been measured for pH and conductivity. Among these, 60 have been analysed for their chemical components. The results show that Lhasa's precipitation events were constantly alkaline with weighted averages of pH 8.36 in the 1987-1988 period, and 7.5 for 1997 to 1999. Only one event was weakly acidic during 1997-1999. Although CO2 partial pressure, a major producer of acidity in natural water on the Plateau, falls with increasing elevation, the lowest measured CO2 partial pressure can only raise pH value by 0.1 units in the sampling areas. Chemical analysis indicates that the major contributor to alkaline precipitation is the continental dust, which is rich in calcium. The analysis also shows that Tibet is still one of the cleanest areas in the world with little air pollution. However, the decline of pH from the 1980s to 1990s, which was reflected by an increase of NO3 - and SO4 2- in precipitation, alerts us to the urgency of environmental protection in this fragile paradise. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.     A 6-Year Experience of Laser Treatments for Burn Scars in a Regional Burn Center-Safety, Efficacy, and Quality Improvement

    Laser treatments have long been used as a treatment method for burn scars. Since 2012, more than 1800 laser treatments were performed at Lehigh Valley Health Network Burn Center, far exceeding any previous cohort in studies exploring laser treatments for burn scars. Although previous research has looked at improving scar appearance and physiology with laser treatments, very few have focused on safety. The purpose of the study was to determine whether laser treatments are a safe treatment option for burn scars. Four hundred and fourteen patients who had undergone at least one laser treatment in the outpatient burn center since 2012 were analyzed. Electronic medical records (EPIC) were reviewed. The data were entered in REDCap and later exported to Microsoft Excel and R Studio for statistical analysis. Most of the complications found were related to the moderate sedation during the procedures and were mild, ie, nausea. The most common adverse effect was prolonged recovery time, which can affect practice flow. The overall postoperative complication rate for laser treatments with and without moderate sedation was minimal at 2.2% and 1.4%, respectively. Pain during and after the procedure averaged 3.9 and 1.7, respectively, on a 1 to 10 scale. The Vancouver Scar Scale showed modest improvement in scar appearance over time with an average improvement of 1.4. The high variability of the Vancouver Scar Scale observed in this series underlines its lack of sensitivity. The study results show that laser treatments for burn scars in the outpatient setting generally are safe for patients in need of burn scar intervention. Some practice flow adjustments need to be taken into consideration when offering these procedures in an outpatient setting

    Arterial Stiffness and Cardiovascular Risk: The Role of Brachial Cuff-measured Index

    Early detection of vascular disease is fundamental to the prevention and treatment of systemic vascular lesions. The timely identification of vascular damage can be achieved by comprehensively assessing the structural anomaly and/or functional degeneration of the vasculature. The assessment may to some extent indicate the long-term detrimental effects of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors on vascular health. A key aspect in the evaluation of vascular function is the measurement of arterial stiffness. In 2012, the arterial velocity-pulse index (AVI) and arterial pressure-volume index (API) were introduced, which are noninvasively measured with a brachial cuff, and can reflect the status of arterial stiffness in both the aorta and the brachial artery. A large number of relevant studies have demonstrated the strong associations between AVI/API and various CVD risk factors, underlining the substantial relevance of the indices in CVD risk assessment. In this review, we provide a systematic review of the progresses made in brachial cuff-based measurements of arterial stiffness. In addition, we summarize the results of the recent studies focused on exploring the associations of AVI/API with relevant risk factors as well as their roles in CVD assessment
