    Search for the Θ+\Theta^+ pentaquark in the reaction γdpKK+n\gamma d \to p K^- K^+ n

    A search for the \thp in the reaction γdpKK+n\gamma d \to pK^-K^+n was completed using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A study of the same reaction, published earlier, reported the observation of a narrow \thp resonance. The present experiment, with more than 30 times the integrated luminosity of our earlier measurement, does not show any evidence for a narrow pentaquark resonance. The angle-integrated upper limit on \thp production in the mass range of 1.52 to 1.56 GeV/c2^2 for the γdpKΘ+\gamma d \to pK^-\Theta^+ reaction is 0.3 nb (95% CL). This upper limit depends on assumptions made for the mass and angular distribution of \thp production. Using \lamstar production as an empirical measure of rescattering in the deuteron, the cross section upper limit for the elementary γnKΘ+\gamma n \to K^-\Theta^+ reaction is estimated to be a factor of 10 higher, {\it i.e.}, 3\sim 3 nb (95% CL).Comment: 5 figures, submitted to PRL, revised for referee comment

    π0\pi^0 photoproduction on the proton for photon energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV

    Differential cross sections for the reaction γppπ0\gamma p \to p \pi^0 have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.Comment: 18 pages, 48 figure

    Exclusive ρ0\rho^0 electroproduction on the proton at CLAS

    The epepρ0e p\to e^\prime p \rho^0 reaction has been measured, using the 5.754 GeV electron beam of Jefferson Lab and the CLAS detector. This represents the largest ever set of data for this reaction in the valence region. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented. The WW, Q2Q^2 and tt dependences of the cross section are compared to theoretical calculations based on tt-channel meson-exchange Regge theory on the one hand and on quark handbag diagrams related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on the other hand. The Regge approach can describe at the \approx 30% level most of the features of the present data while the two GPD calculations that are presented in this article which succesfully reproduce the high energy data strongly underestimate the present data. The question is then raised whether this discrepancy originates from an incomplete or inexact way of modelling the GPDs or the associated hard scattering amplitude or whether the GPD formalism is simply inapplicable in this region due to higher-twists contributions, incalculable at present.Comment: 29 pages, 29 figure

    First Measurement of Beam-Recoil Observables Cx and Cz in Hyperon Photoproduction

    Spin transfer from circularly polarized real photons to recoiling hyperons has been measured for the reactions γ+pK++Λ\vec\gamma + p \to K^+ + \vec\Lambda and γ+pK++Σ0\vec\gamma + p \to K^+ + \vec\Sigma^0. The data were obtained using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies WW between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for 0.85<cosθK+c.m.<+0.95-0.85<\cos\theta_{K^+}^{c.m.}< +0.95. For the Λ\Lambda, the polarization transfer coefficient along the photon momentum axis, CzC_z, was found to be near unity for a wide range of energy and kaon production angles. The associated transverse polarization coefficient, CxC_x, is smaller than CzC_z by a roughly constant difference of unity. Most significantly, the {\it total} Λ\Lambda polarization vector, including the induced polarization PP, has magnitude consistent with unity at all measured energies and production angles when the beam is fully polarized. For the Σ0\Sigma^0 this simple phenomenology does not hold. All existing hadrodynamic models are in poor agreement with these results.Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures, Submitted to Physical Review

    Ideal timing to transfer from an acute care hospital to an interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation program following a stroke: an exploratory study

    BACKGROUND: Timely accessibility to organized inpatient stroke rehabilitation services may become compromised since the demand for rehabilitation services following stroke is rapidly growing with no promise of additional resources. This often leads to prolonged lengths of stays in acute care facilities for individuals surviving a stroke. It is believed that this delay spent in acute care facilities may inhibit the crucial motor recovery process taking place shortly after a stroke. It is important to document the ideal timing to initiate intensive inpatient stroke rehabilitation after the neurological event. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the specific influence of short, moderate and long onset-admission intervals (OAI) on rehabilitation outcomes across homogeneous subgroups of patients who were admitted to a standardized interdisciplinary inpatient stroke rehabilitation program. METHODS: A total of 418 patients discharged from the inpatient neurological rehabilitation program at the Montreal Rehabilitation Hospital Network after a first stroke (79% of all cases reviewed) were included in this retrospective study. After conducting a matching procedure across these patients based on the degree of disability, gender, and age, a total of 40 homogeneous triads (n = 120) were formed according to the three OAI subgroups: short (less than 20 days), moderate (between 20 and 40 days) or long (over 40 days; maximum of 70 days) OAI subgroups. The rehabilitation outcomes (admission and discharge Functional Independence Measure scores (FIM), absolute and relative FIM gain scores, rehabilitation length of stay, efficiency scores) were evaluated to test for differences between the three OAI subgroups. RESULTS: Analysis revealed that the three OAI subgroups were comparable for all rehabilitation outcomes studied. No statistical difference was found for admission (P = 0.305–0.972) and discharge (P = 0.083–0.367) FIM scores, absolute (P = 0.533–0.647) and relative (P = 0.496–0.812) FIM gain scores, rehabilitation length of stay (P = 0.096), and efficiency scores (P = 0.103–0.674). CONCLUSION: OAI does not seem to affect significantly inpatient stroke rehabilitation outcomes of patients referred from acute care facilities where rehabilitation services are rapidly initiated after the onset of the stroke and offered throughout their stay. However, other studies considering factors such as the type and intensity of the rehabilitation are required to support those results

    Valid and reliable instruments for arm-hand assessment at ICF activity level in persons with hemiplegia: a systematic review

    Contains fulltext : 110141.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Loss of arm-hand performance due to a hemiparesis as a result of stroke or cerebral palsy (CP), leads to large problems in daily life of these patients. Assessment of arm-hand performance is important in both clinical practice and research. To gain more insight in e.g. effectiveness of common therapies for different patient populations with similar clinical characteristics, consensus regarding the choice and use of outcome measures is paramount. To guide this choice, an overview of available instruments is necessary. The aim of this systematic review is to identify, evaluate and categorize instruments, reported to be valid and reliable, assessing arm-hand performance at the ICF activity level in patients with stroke or cerebral palsy. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed to identify articles containing instruments assessing arm-hand skilled performance in patients with stroke or cerebral palsy. Instruments were identified and divided into the categories capacity, perceived performance and actual performance. A second search was performed to obtain information on their content and psychometrics. RESULTS: Regarding capacity, perceived performance and actual performance, 18, 9 and 3 instruments were included respectively. Only 3 of all included instruments were used and tested in both patient populations. The content of the instruments differed widely regarding the ICF levels measured, assessment of the amount of use versus the quality of use, the inclusion of unimanual and/or bimanual tasks and the inclusion of basic and/or extended tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Although many instruments assess capacity and perceived performance, a dearth exists of instruments assessing actual performance. In addition, instruments appropriate for more than one patient population are sparse. For actual performance, new instruments have to be developed, with specific focus on the usability in different patient populations and the assessment of quality of use as well as amount of use. Also, consensus about the choice and use of instruments within and across populations is needed

    Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} for Pion Electroproduction in the Roper Resonance Region

    The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} measures the interference between real and imaginary amplitudes in pion electroproduction and can be used to probe the coupling between resonant and non-resonant processes. We report new measurements of σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} in the N(1440)1/2+N(1440){1/2}^+ (Roper) resonance region at Q2=0.40Q^2=0.40 and 0.65 GeV2^2 for both the π0p\pi^0 p and π+n\pi^+ n channels. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at a beam energy of 1.515 GeV. Complete angular distributions were obtained and are compared to recent phenomenological models. The σLT(π+n)\sigma_{LT^\prime}(\pi^+ n) channel shows a large sensitivity to the Roper resonance multipoles M1M_{1-} and S1S_{1-} and provides new constraints on models of resonance formation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     Separated Structure Functions for the Exclusive Electroproduction of K+ΛK^+\Lambda and K+Σ0K^+\Sigma^0 Final States

    We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of K+ΛK^+\Lambda and K+Σ0K^+\Sigma^0 final states from a proton target using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions σT\sigma_T, σL\sigma_L, σTT\sigma_{TT}, and σLT\sigma_{LT} were extracted from the Φ\Phi- and ϵ\epsilon-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first σL/σT\sigma_L/\sigma_T separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. The data span a broad range of momentum transfers from 0.5Q22.80.5\leq Q^2\leq 2.8 GeV2^2 and invariant energy from 1.6W2.41.6\leq W\leq 2.4 GeV, while spanning nearly the full center-of-mass angular range of the kaon. The separated structure functions reveal clear differences between the production dynamics for the Λ\Lambda and Σ0\Sigma^0 hyperons. These results provide an unprecedented data sample with which to constrain current and future models for the associated production of strangeness, which will allow for a better understanding of the underlying resonant and non-resonant contributions to hyperon production.Comment: 61 pages, 26 figures, 5 table

    Sodium in the Relapsing–Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Spinal Cord: Increased Concentrations and Associations With Microstructural Tissue Anisotropy

    BACKGROUND: Associations between brain total sodium concentration, disability, and disease progression have recently been reported in multiple sclerosis. However, such measures in spinal cord have not been reported. PURPOSE: To measure total sodium concentration (TSC) alterations in the cervical spinal cord of people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and a control cohort using sodium MR spectroscopy (MRS). STUDY TYPE: Retrospective cohort. SUBJECTS: Nineteen people with RRMS and 21 healthy controls. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T sodium MRS, diffusion tensor imaging, and 3D gradient echo. ASSESSMENT: Quantification of total sodium concentration in the cervical cord using a reference phantom. Measures of spinal cord cross-sectional area, fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, radial diffusivity, and axial diffusivity from 1 H MRI. Clinical assessments of 9-Hole Peg Test, 25-Foot Timed walk test, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test with 3-second intervals, grip strength, vibration sensitivity, and posturography were performed on the RRMS cohort as well as reporting lesions in the C2/3 area. STATISTICAL TESTS: Multiple linear regression models were run between sodium and clinical scores, cross-sectional area, and diffusion metrics to establish any correlations. RESULTS: A significant increase in spinal cord total sodium concentration was found in people with RRMS relative to healthy controls (57.6 ± 18 mmol and 38.0 ± 8.6 mmol, respectively, P < 0.001). Increased TSC correlated with reduced fractional anisotropy (P = 0.034) and clinically with decreased mediolateral stability assessed with posturography (P = 0.045). DATA CONCLUSION: Total sodium concentration in the cervical spinal cord is elevated in RRMS. This alteration is associated with reduced fractional anisotropy, which may be due to changes in tissue microstructure and, hence, in the integrity of spinal cord tissue.
