Restructuring of industrial space in Hong Kong: planning regulations and market responses

    Get PDF
Deindustrialization and economic restructuring have led to increasing deterioration and obsolescence of industrial space in many modern cities. Transformation of this obsolete industrial property space into alternative uses becomes an indispensable part of urban policy in achieving sustainable urban growth. During the past four decades, Hong Kong has evolved from a low-cost manufacturing base to become an …published_or_final_versio

Optimal site area for high-density housing development

    Get PDF
This study provides an empirical assessment of the optimal site area for master-planned high-density housing development in Hong Kong. Conventional hedonic pricing methods are not used because they cannot separate the amenity value of large sites from the price effects caused by market power. We obtain our estimate from a unique data set containing the choice of applicants for public housing units in 128 housing estates in Hong Kong between 1990 and 1998. An inverted U-shaped relationship between site area and popularity of the estate is revealed. We conclude that the land areas of most public housing estates in Hong Kong are sub-optimal. Our estimated optimal site area serves as a quantitative benchmark for the government in its future disposal of public as well as private housing land. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. 8-Chloroadenosine induces apoptosis in human coronary artery endothelial cells through the activation of the unfolded protein response

© 2019 The Authors Infiltration of leukocytes within the vessel at sites of inflammation and the subsequent generation of myeloperoxidase-derived oxidants, including hypochlorous acid, are key characteristics of atherosclerosis. Hypochlorous acid is a potent oxidant that reacts readily with most biological molecules, including DNA and RNA. This results in nucleic acid modification and the formation of different chlorinated products. These products have been used as biomarkers of inflammation, owing to their presence in elevated amounts in different inflammatory fluids and diseased tissue, including atherosclerotic lesions. However, it is not clear whether these materials are simply biomarkers, or could also play a role in the development of chronic inflammatory pathologies. In this study, we examined the reactivity of different chlorinated nucleosides with human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAEC). Evidence was obtained for the incorporation of each chlorinated nucleoside into the cellular RNA or DNA. However, only 8-chloro-adenosine (8ClA) had a significant effect on the cell viability and metabolic activity. Exposure of HCAEC to 8ClA decreased glycolysis, and resulted in a reduction in ATP, with a corresponding increase in the chlorinated analogue, 8Cl-ATP in the nucleotide pool. 8ClA also induced sustained endoplasmic reticulum stress within the HCAEC, which resulted in activation of the unfolded protein response, the altered expression of antioxidant genes and culminated in the release of calcium into the cytosol and cell death by apoptosis. Taken together, these data provide new insight into pathways by which myeloperoxidase activity and resultant hypochlorous acid generation could promote endothelial cell damage during chronic inflammation, which could be relevant to the progression of atherosclerosis

Evaluating hospital infection control measures for antimicrobial-resistant pathogens using stochastic transmission models: Application to vancomycin-resistant enterococci in intensive care units

Nosocomial pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) are the cause of significant morbidity and mortality among hospital patients. It is important to be able to assess the efficacy of control measures using data on patient outcomes. In this paper, we describe methods for analysing such data using patient-level stochastic models which seek to describe the underlying unobserved process of transmission. The methods are applied to detailed longitudinal patient-level data on vancomycin-resistant Enterococci from a study in a US hospital with eight intensive care units (ICUs). The data comprise admission and discharge dates, dates and results of screening tests, and dates during which precautionary measures were in place for each patient during the study period. Results include estimates of the efficacy of the control measures, the proportion of unobserved patients colonized with vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, and the proportion of patients colonized on admission. </jats:p

Tradução como Ponte Plástica: Hibridismo e Identidade em Verbertes da Wikipédia

    Get PDF

Plenum window insertion loss in the presence of a line source—a scale model study

    Get PDF
The acoustical insertion losses of plenum windows installed on a building facade in the presence of a non-parallel line source are studied by using a 1:4 scaled down model in a semi-anechoic chamber in the present investigation. Two types of insertion losses, weighted by the normalized traffic noise spectrum (from the 100 Hz to 5000 Hz one-third octave bands), are defined with different references. The first one is for the case where the orientation of the building facade relative to the line source is fixed. The reference case is the opened window having the same orientation angle as the plenum window. The maximum and minimum insertion losses under this condition across the orientations tested are found to be around 14 dB and 5 dB, respectively. The other is the opposite situation where such orientation is allowed to change because of practical purposes and the reference for this condition is the opened window with its width span parallel to the line source. The corresponding maximum and minimum insertion losses are found to be around 18 dB and 8 dB, respectively. There are evidences showing that the lower order plenum acoustic modes are responsible for the relatively high low frequency insertion loss

Abstract

Background

The local treatment of burn wounds has long been a subject of debate. The objective of this study was to compare the cost and the effectiveness of Moist Exposed Burn Ointment -MEBO versus a combination of <it>povidone iodine </it>plus <it>bepanthenol </it>cream for partial thickness burns.

Methods

The study was carried out in the Burn Center of a state hospital in Athens, Greece. 211 patients needing conservative therapy were prospectively selected according to the depth of the burn wound. The treatment was allocated according to the Stratified Randomization Design. The outcomes measured were mean cost of in-hospital stay, rate of complications, time of 50% wound healing, pain scores, in hospital stay diminution. We have adopted a societal perspective.

Results

In the total groups MEBO presented lower cost, (although not significantly different: p = 0.10) and better effectiveness. The data suggest that MEBO is the dominant therapy for superficial partial burn wound with significantly lower costs and significantly higher effectiveness due to a lesser time of recovery and consequently lower time of hospitalization and follow-up. MEBO presented similar percentages of complications with the comparator, lower pain levels and smaller time of no healthy appearance of the burn limits for superficial partial thickness burns.

Conclusions

The data suggested that topical application of MEBO may be considered for further investigation as a potential first-line treatment modality for superficial partial thickness burns.

Trial registration

The trial has been registered on the International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number Register (ISRCTN) and given the registration number ISRCTN74058791.</p

Genomewide linkage scan in a multigeneration Caucasian pedigree identifies a novel locus for keratoconus on chromosome 5q14.3-q21.1

Purpose: Keratoconus is a corneal dystrophy with an incidence of 1 in 2000 and a leading cause for cornea transplantation in Western developed countries. Both clinical observations and segregation analyses suggest a major role for genes in its pathogenesis. It is genetically heterogenous, most commonly sporadic, but inherited patterns with recessive or dominant modes have also been reported. We studied a four-generation autosomaldominant pedigree to identify disease loci for keratoconus. Methods: A two-stage genome-wide scan was applied to 27 family members. First linkage analysis was performed with 343 microsatellite markers along the 22 autosomal chromosomes at Ϸ10 cM density. This was followed by fine mapping at Ϸ2 cM density, in regions suggestive of linkage. Multipoint linkage analysis was performed using GeneHunter2. Results: Evidence of suggestive linkage from the initial scan was observed at the 82 to 112 cM region of chromosome 5q14.1-q21.3 with a maximum lod score (LOD) of 3.48 (penetrance ϭ 0.5). Fine mapping by testing an additional 11 microsatellite markers at 1 to 3 cM intervals revealed a narrower and higher peak (99 -119 cM) with LOD 3.53. By analysis of the recombination of haplotypes, the putative locus of keratoconus was further narrowed to a 6 cM region (8
