CELNet: Evidence Localization for Pathology Images using Weakly Supervised Learning
Despite deep convolutional neural networks boost the performance of image
classification and segmentation in digital pathology analysis, they are usually
weak in interpretability for clinical applications or require heavy annotations
to achieve object localization. To overcome this problem, we propose a weakly
supervised learning-based approach that can effectively learn to localize the
discriminative evidence for a diagnostic label from weakly labeled training
data. Experimental results show that our proposed method can reliably pinpoint
the location of cancerous evidence supporting the decision of interest, while
still achieving a competitive performance on glimpse-level and slide-level
histopathologic cancer detection tasks.Comment: Accepted for MICCAI 201
Kahler Independence of the G2-MSSM
The G2-MSSM is a model of particle physics coupled to moduli fields with
interesting phenomenology both for colliders and astrophysical experiments. In
this paper we consider a more general model - whose moduli Kahler potential is
a completely arbitrary G2-holonomy Kahler potential and whose matter Kahler
potential is also more general. We prove that the vacuum structure and spectrum
of BSM particles is largely unchanged in this much more general class of
theories. In particular, gaugino masses are still supressed relative to the
gravitino mass and moduli masses. We also consider the effects of higher order
corrections to the matter Kahler potential and find a connection between the
nature of the LSP and flavor effects.Comment: Final version, matches the version published in JHE
On the Classification of Brane Tilings
We present a computationally efficient algorithm that can be used to generate
all possible brane tilings. Brane tilings represent the largest class of
superconformal theories with known AdS duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions and
have proved useful for describing the physics of both D3 branes and also M2
branes probing Calabi-Yau singularities. This algorithm has been implemented
and is used to generate all possible brane tilings with at most 6
superpotential terms, including consistent and inconsistent brane tilings. The
collection of inconsistent tilings found in this work form the most
comprehensive study of such objects to date.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, 15 table
Counting Orbifolds
We present several methods of counting the orbifolds C^D/Gamma. A
correspondence between counting orbifold actions on C^D, brane tilings, and
toric diagrams in D-1 dimensions is drawn. Barycentric coordinates and scaling
mechanisms are introduced to characterize lattice simplices as toric diagrams.
We count orbifolds of C^3, C^4, C^5, C^6 and C^7. Some remarks are made on
closed form formulas for the partition function that counts distinct orbifold
actions.Comment: 69 pages, 9 figures, 24 tables; minor correction
Symmetries of Abelian Orbifolds
Using the Polya Enumeration Theorem, we count with particular attention to
C^3/Gamma up to C^6/Gamma, abelian orbifolds in various dimensions which are
invariant under cycles of the permutation group S_D. This produces a collection
of multiplicative sequences, one for each cycle in the Cycle Index of the
permutation group. A multiplicative sequence is controlled by its values on
prime numbers and their pure powers. Therefore, we pay particular attention to
orbifolds of the form C^D/Gamma where the order of Gamma is p^alpha. We propose
a generalization of these sequences for any D and any p.Comment: 75 pages, 13 figures, 30 table
Emerging Non-Anomalous Baryonic Symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 Correspondence
We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4
correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This
leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic
symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs
correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity
backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the
C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity
backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries
and identify the expected Goldstone bosons and global strings in the infra-red.
In doing so we confirm the claim that the emerging symmetries are indeed
non-anomalous baryonic symmetries.Comment: 65 pages, 15 figures;v2: minor changes, published versio
Neutralino dark matter in mSUGRA/CMSSM with a 125 GeV light Higgs scalar
The minimal supergravity (mSUGRA or CMSSM) model is an oft-used framework for
exhibiting the properties of neutralino (WIMP) cold dark matter (CDM). However,
the recent evidence from Atlas and CMS on a light Higgs scalar with mass
m_h\simeq 125 GeV highly constrains the superparticle mass spectrum, which in
turn constrains the neutralino annihilation mechanisms in the early universe.
We find that stau and stop co-annihilation mechanisms -- already highly
stressed by the latest Atlas/CMS results on SUSY searches -- are nearly
eliminated if indeed the light Higgs scalar has mass m_h\simeq 125 GeV.
Furthermore, neutralino annihilation via the A-resonance is essentially ruled
out in mSUGRA so that it is exceedingly difficult to generate
thermally-produced neutralino-only dark matter at the measured abundance. The
remaining possibility lies in the focus-point region which now moves out to
m_0\sim 10-20 TeV range due to the required large trilinear soft SUSY breaking
term A_0. The remaining HB/FP region is more fine-tuned than before owing to
the typically large top squark masses. We present updated direct and indirect
detection rates for neutralino dark matter, and show that ton scale noble
liquid detectors will either discover mixed higgsino CDM or essentially rule
out thermally-produced neutralino-only CDM in the mSUGRA model.Comment: 17 pages including 9 .eps figure
A review of physical supply and EROI of fossil fuels in China
This paper reviews China’s future fossil fuel supply from the perspectives of physical output and net energy output. Comprehensive analyses of physical output of fossil fuels suggest that China’s total oil production will likely reach its peak, at about 230 Mt/year (or 9.6 EJ/year), in 2018; its total gas production will peak at around 350 Bcm/year (or 13.6 EJ/year) in 2040, while coal production will peak at about 4400 Mt/year (or 91.9 EJ/year) around 2020 or so. In terms of the forecast production of these fuels, there are significant differences among current studies. These differences can be mainly explained by different ultimately recoverable resources assumptions, the nature of the models used, and differences in the historical production data. Due to the future constraints on fossil fuels production, a large gap is projected to grow between domestic supply and demand, which will need to be met by increasing imports. Net energy analyses show that both coal and oil and gas production show a steady declining trend of EROI (energy return on investment) due to the depletion of shallow-buried coal resources and conventional oil and gas resources, which is generally consistent with the approaching peaks of physical production of fossil fuels. The peaks of fossil fuels production, coupled with the decline in EROI ratios, are likely to challenge the sustainable development of Chinese society unless new abundant energy resources with high EROI values can be found
Fermionic response from fractionalization in an insulating two-dimensional magnet
Conventionally ordered magnets possess bosonic elementary excitations, called
magnons. By contrast, no magnetic insulators in more than one dimension are
known whose excitations are not bosons but fermions. Theoretically, some
quantum spin liquids (QSLs) -- new topological phases which can occur when
quantum fluctuations preclude an ordered state -- are known to exhibit Majorana
fermions as quasiparticles arising from fractionalization of spins. Alas,
despite much searching, their experimental observation remains elusive. Here,
we show that fermionic excitations are remarkably directly evident in
experimental Raman scattering data across a broad energy and temperature range
in the two-dimensional material -RuCl. This shows the importance of
magnetic materials as hosts of Majorana fermions. In turn, this first
systematic evaluation of the dynamics of a QSL at finite temperature emphasizes
the role of excited states for detecting such exotic properties associated with
otherwise hard-to-identify topological QSLs.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Uncertainty evaluation associated with versatile automated gauging influenced by process variations through design of experiments approach
Recent advances in versatile automated gauging have enabled accurate geometric tolerance assessment on the shop floor. This paper is concerned with the uncertainty evaluation associated with comparative coordinate measurement using the design of experiments (DOE) approach. It employs the Renishaw Equator which is a software-driven comparative gauge based on the traditional comparison of production parts to a reference master part. The fixturing requirement of each production part to the master part is approximately ±1 mm for a comparison process with an uncertainty of ±2 μm. Therefore, a number of experimental designs are applied with the main focus on the influence of part misalignment from rotation between master and measure coordinate frames on the comparator measurement uncertainty. Other factors considered include measurement mode mainly in scanning and touch-trigger probing (TTP) and alignment procedure used to establish the coordinate reference frame (CRF) with respect to the number of contact points used for each geometric feature measured. The measurement uncertainty analysis of the comparator technique used by the Equator gauge commences with a simple measurement task using a gauge block to evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) uncertainty of length comparative coordinate measurement influenced by an offset by tilt in one direction (two-dimensional angular misalignment). Then, a specific manufactured measurement object is employed so that the comparator measurement uncertainty can be assessed for numerous measurement tasks within a satisfactory range of the working volume of the versatile gauge. Furthermore, in the second case study, different types of part misalignment including both 2D and 3D angular misalignments are applied. The time required for managing the re-mastering process is also examined. A task specific uncertainty evaluation is completed using DOE. Also, investigating the effects of process variations that might be experienced by such a device in workshop environments. It is shown that the comparator measurement uncertainties obtained by all the experiments agree with system features under specified conditions. It is also demonstrated that when the specified conditions are exceeded, the comparator measurement uncertainty is associated with the measurement task, the measurement strategy used, the feature size, and the magnitude and direction of offset angles in relation to the reference axes of the machine. In particular, departures from the specified part fixturing requirement of Equator have a more significant effect on the uncertainty of length measurement in comparator mode and a less significant effect on the diameter measurement uncertainty for the specific Equator and test conditions
