    Temperatures of continuously operated mobile x-ray focal spots

    We use the adjective "mobile" to describe a focal spot in an x‐ray tube which moves cyclically in a closed path relative to the target surface on which it is generated quite without reference to whether the spot be fixed or in motion with respect to the tube. Alex MĂŒller and also A. Bouwers have made calculations of the thermal effects in such spots energized for very short fractions of one cycle of motion. This paper treats the case where the focal spot is energized continuously so that a "steady" state of thermal oscillation is set up. The solutions obtained refer only to conditions after this steady state of oscillation is reached. Only the ideal case of a spot of uniform intensity with sharp boundaries is treated. For simplicity the flow of heat from front target surface to cooling water is assumed one dimensional and normal to the front surface over an everywhere uniform thickness d. Curves are plotted showing the ratio of temperature rise in moving spots to that in fixed spots of the same size as a function of r the size of the spot relative to the length of path it describes and of Ξ a variable depending on the speed of rotation, the thickness d and the thermal constants of the target material. Curves of the ratio of permissible energy input for moving and fixed spots, respectively, as a function of the aforementioned variables are also shown. The paper gives a solution reduced to figures and curves of the heat flow equation for certain boundary conditions which to the author's knowledge has never before been obtained and therefore has some interest beyond its immediate application to x‐ray tubes. Certain mathematical difficulties of practical interest are also overcome in a way which may be helpful in other problems of similar nature. For the reader uninterested in mathematics the results are independently discussed in a separate section. Approximate methods are given for applying the results of the paper to targets consisting of two materials such as tungsten and copper

    Inclusive neutron cross-sections at forward angles from Nb Nb and Au Au collisions at 800-MeV/nucleon

    Inclusive neutron spectra were measured at 0°, 4°, 8°, 15°, 30°, and 42° from Nb-Nb and Au-Au collisions at 800 MeV/nucleon. A peak that originates from neutron evaporation from the projectile appears in the spectra at angles out to 8°. The shapes and magnitudes of the spectra are compared with those calculated from models of nucleus-nucleus collisions. The differential cross sections for Au-Au collisions are about four times those for Nb-Nb collisions. The predictions of the Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (VUU) and QMD theories agree with the angular distributions of the differential cross sections except at small angles; the VUU prediction overestimates the angular distributions from a few degrees to about 20°, whereas the QMD prediction underestimates the angular distributions below 8°. The Firestreak model overestimates the angular distribution for Nb-Nb collisions and underestimates it for Au-Au collisions. Also, the VUU and QMD models agree with the measured double-differential cross sections in more angular and energy regions than the Firestreak and intranuclear cascade models; however, none of the models can account for the peaks at small angles (θ≤15°)

    The contribution of inflammation to deleterious aging outcomes is increasingly recognized; however, little is known about the complex relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6) and brain structure, or how this association might change with increasing age. We examined the association between IL-6, white matter integrity, and cognition in 151 community dwelling older adults, and tested whether age moderated these associations. Blood levels of IL-6 and vascular risk (e.g., homocysteine), as well as health history information, were collected. Processing speed assessments were administered to assess cognitive functioning, and we employed tract-based spatial statistics to examine whole brain white matter and regions of interest. Given the association between inflammation, vascular risk, and corpus callosum (CC) integrity, fractional anisotropy (FA) of the genu, body, and splenium represented our primary dependent variables. Whole brain analysis revealed an inverse association between IL-6 and CC fractional anisotropy. Subsequent ROI linear regression and ridge regression analyses indicated that the magnitude of this effect increased with age; thus, older individuals with higher IL-6 levels displayed lower white matter integrity. Finally, higher IL-6 levels were related to worse processing speed; this association was moderated by age, and was not fully accounted for by CC volume. This study highlights that at older ages, the association between higher IL-6 levels and lower white matter integrity is more pronounced; furthermore, it underscores the important, albeit burgeoning role of inflammatory processes in cognitive aging trajectories

    Evaluation of an Algal Biomass as an Ingredient in Cattle Feed

    A study was conducted evaluating the effects of feeding condensed algal residue solubles (CARS; available in 2019 in Blair, NE area) to finishing cattle for 100 days. Four levels of CARS were evaluated with 5 steers and 5 heifers individually fed per level of inclusion. The diets consisted of 70% dry rolled corn with CARS displacing corn at 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5% of dry matter. Increasing CARS inclusion resulted in a linear decrease in intake, a quadratic increase in daily gain, and a linear decrease in feed:gain. Calculations showed a linear increase in dietary net energy as CARS increased in the diet. Minimal differences in organ weights, blood chemistry, hematology, and urine were observed. Daily observations and histology results suggest no differences in cattle health due to dietary treatment. Including CARS at 5% of diet dry matter increased gain 4.2% and feed:gain 10.1% relative to a corn based finishing diet

    Religion as practices of attachment and materiality: the making of Buddhism in contemporary London

    This article aims to explore Buddhism’s often-overlooked presence on London’s urban landscape, showing how its quietness and subtlety of approach has allowed the faith to grow largely beneath the radar. It argues that Buddhism makes claims to urban space in much the same way as it produces its faith, being as much about the practices performed and the spaces where they are enacted as it is about faith or beliefs. The research across a number of Buddhist sites in London reveals that number of people declaring themselves as Buddhists has indeed risen in recent years, following the rise of other non-traditional religions in the UK; however, this research suggests that Buddhism differs from these in several ways. Drawing on Baumann’s (2002) distinction between traditionalist and modernist approaches to Buddhism, our research reveals a growth in each of these. Nevertheless, Buddhism remains largely invisible in the urban and suburban landscape of London, adapting buildings that are already in place, with little material impact on the built environment, and has thus been less subject to contestation than other religious movements and traditions. This research contributes to a growing literature which foregrounds the importance of religion in making contemporary urban and social worlds
