    The Monopole Equations in Topological Yang-Mills

    We twist the monopole equations of Seiberg and Witten and show how these equations are realized in topological Yang-Mills theory. A Floer derivative and a Morse functional are found and are used to construct a unitary transformation between the usual Floer cohomologies and those of the monopole equations. Furthermore, these equations are seen to reside in the vanishing self-dual curvature condition of an OSp(12)OSp(1|2)-bundle. Alternatively, they may be seen arising directly from a vanishing self-dual curvature condition on an SU(2)SU(2)-bundle in which the fermions are realized as spanning the tangent space for a specific background.Comment: 7 pgs., LaTeX (fullpage

    Water Management and the Valuation of Indirect Environmental Services

    Comprehensive water basin and watershed planning and management require valuation of the intermediate ecological services provided to the water resources themselves. Valuation of forest cover in the augmentation of water resources is discussed in the context of aggregate economic planning, water-basin or sectoral planning, and conservation project evaluation. The importance of valuing intermediate non-market goods is illustrated for each planning tool in the context of an illustrative example of the Pearl Harbor/Ko'olau watershed in Hawaii. In the context of water allocation and investment in waterworks, considerations of full income valuation imply that the value of water should incorporate the risk of watershed degradation contingent on the expected conservation effort. What appear to be new objectives of economic planning, such as sustainable development, do not require new criteria but rather the augmentation of existing methods of income accounting and project valuation to include the values on non-market goods. We also show that measurement of non-market valuation does not necessarily require the use of contingent-valuation methods, even when the usual alternatives (hedonics, household production, etc.) are not directly applicable.

    Summary of along-track data from the earth radiation budget satellite for several representative ocean regions

    For several days in January and August 1985, the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite, a component of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE), was operated in an along-track scanning mode. A survey of radiance measurements taken in this mode is given for five ocean regions: the north and south Atlantic, the Arabian Sea, the western Pacific north of the Equator, and part of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Each overflight contains information about the clear scene and three cloud categories: partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, and overcast. The data presented include the variation of longwave and shortwave radiance in each scene classification as a function of viewing zenity angle during each overflight of one of the five target regions. Several features of interest in the development of anisotropic models are evident, including the azimuthal dependence of shortwave radiance that is an essential feature of shortwave bidirectional models. The data also demonstrate that the scene classification algorithm employed by the ERBE results in scene classifications that are a function of viewing geometry

    1.1 Background: the NCSI AAD group The National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI, 2010) was set up in response to the NHS Cancer Reform Strategy (Department of Health, 2007) as a collaboration between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Department of Health and NHS Improvement, with the goal to achieve a better understanding of the experiences of cancer survivors and to advocate for the provision of services to support them. Within this broad remit, it was recognised that there was a particular group of patients whose needs were commonly neglected; people who were experiencing the ongoing effects of cancer beyond first-line treatment but who were not at end of life. The Active and Advanced Disease (AAD) working group was created to consider issues of relevance to such people. 1.2 Aims of this review This project set out to meet the following aim: To review the literature on selected cancers in order to identify implications for the development of services to support patients experiencing difficulties associated with active and advanced disease

    Valve recession: From experiment to predictive model

    Increasing demands on engine performance and cost reductions have meant that advances made in materials and production technology are often outpaced This frequently results in wear problems occurring with engine components. Few models exist for predicting wear, and consequently each wear problem has to be investigated, the cause isolated and remedial action taken. The objective of this work was to carry out experimental studies to investigate valve and seat insert wear mechanisms and use the test results to develop a recession prediction tool to assess the potential for valve recession and solve problems that occur more quickly. Experimental apparatus has been developed that is capable of providing a valid simulation of the wear of diesel automotive inlet valves and seats. Test methodologies developed have isolated the effects of impact and sliding. A semi-empirical wear model for predicting valve recession has been developed based on data gathered during the bench testing. A software program, RECESS, was developed to run the model. Model predictions are compared with engine dynamometer tests and bench tests. The model can be used to give a quantitative prediction of the valve recession to be expected with a particular material pair or a qualitative assessment of how parameters need to be altered in order to reduce recession. The valve recession model can be integrated into an industrial environment in order to help reduce costs and timescales involved in solving valve/seat wear problems
