Classifying Control Variables
Interviews with 68 managers from 20 Fortune 500 firms were used to discern control variables that managers use to control production and evaluate management performance. It was concluded that financial accounting variables tend to be the most used and as a corollary, the control variables do not serve very well in evaluating progress toward long- term goals. Discussion suggests that accounting variables are most appealing because of their appearance of validity and legitimacy

The differences between the economic rate of return measure and the accounting rate of return measure are explored. The economic rate is based on expectation where the accounting rate is based on actual events. The accounting system filters return data by averaging and other processes to create a slow rate of reversion
Autonomous greenhouse gas measurement system for analysis of gas migration on landfill sites
This paper describes the design, development and
validation of an autonomous gas sensing platform
prototype for monitoring of the greenhouse gases, methane
(CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The deployment
undertaken for validation of the developed prototype
monitored landfill gas migration to perimeter borehole
wells on a landfill site. Target gas concentrations were
captured via infrared gas sensors tuned for each target gas
and data reported to an offsite data collection point at 12
hour intervals. This bespoke platform and the
accompanying data recording and interface software
provide a flexible alternative to the presently employed
labor intensive, manual monitoring routines. This
successful trial brought about a change in the management
of the trial sites gas extraction system
Intra-Pelvic Migration of Sliding Hip Screw During Osteosynthesis of Hip Fracture: A Rare Avoidable Intraoperative Complication.
Hip fractures, which are common among old patients, are classified into two groups: intracapsular and extracapsular fractures. Extracapsular fractures can be treated with extramedullary implants [e.g. dynamic hip screw (DHS)] or intramedullary nails. Dynamic hip screw is the treatment of choice in stable pertrochanteric fractures. Intrapelvic migration of the sliding screw is a very rare complication
Pseudospectral discretization of nonlinear delay equations: new prospects for numerical bifurcation analysis
We apply the pseudospectral discretization approach to nonlinear delay models described by delay differential equations, renewal equations or systems of coupled renewal equations and delay differential equations. The aim is to derive ordinary differential equations and to investigate the stability and bifurcation of equilibria of the original model by available software packages for continuation and bifurcation for ordinary differential equations. Theoretical and numerical results confirm the effectiveness and the versatility of the approach, opening a new perspective for the bifurcation analysis of delay equations, in particular coupled renewal and delay differential equations
Cytomegalovirus Retinitis in an Immunocompromised Infant: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Purpose: To describe a case of bilateral cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) in an immunocompromised infant. Methods: A 4-month-old male infant with severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome was examined for the presence of CMVR. Ocular involvement was recorded and monitored by digital imaging. Results: The child had bilateral CMVR, with a fine granular pattern, present both in the peripheral retina and posterior pole. There was no vitritis. The active areas of retinitis progressively resolved with intravenous ganciclovir treatment. At the 3-month follow-up examination, no recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Ganciclovir treatment was effective in this case. The prognosis depends on rapid institution of effective antiviral therapy and on a patient’s systemic immunocompetence
Esculetin provides neuroprotection against mutant huntingtin-induced toxicity in huntington’s disease models
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by an abnormal CAG trinucleotide repeat expansion within exon 1 of the huntingtin (HTT) gene. This mutation leads to the production of mutant HTT (mHTT) protein which triggers neuronal death through several mechanisms. Here, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of esculetin (ESC), a bioactive phenolic compound, in an inducible PC12 model and a transgenic Drosophila melanogaster model of HD, both of which express mHTT fragments. ESC partially inhibited the progression of mHTT aggregation and reduced neuronal death through its ability to counteract the oxidative stress and mitochondria impairment elicited by mHTT in the PC12 model. The ability of ESC to counteract neuronal death was also confirmed in the transgenic Drosophila model. Although ESC did not modify the lifespan of the transgenic Drosophila, it still seemed to have a positive impact on the HD phenotype of this model. Based on our findings, ESC may be further studied as a potential neuroprotective agent in a rodent transgenic model of HD
