A ducted wind turbine simulation model for building simulation
Power production is shifting away from centralized generation plants to production of heat and power at the point of demand. A technology that may play a part in this shift is the ducted wind turbine (DWT). The emergence of small building integrated micro turbines opens up the possibility of utilizing the differential pressures occurring around buildings for local power production. This paper describes work to develop and test a simple mathematical model of a ducted wind turbine and its integration within a building simulation tool. A case study in which the simulation model will be used to analyse of the likely power output from a building incorporating ducted wind turbines within the façade is also presented
Elektabilitas Calon Legislatif DPRD Dapil I Provinsi Jawa Tengah Pada Pemilu Legislatif 2014 (Dilihat Dari Perspektif Pandangan Pemilih)
Electability can be sized for the participants in the legislative election strategy to do to win elections more effectively and efficiently. The current electability becomes the most important factor for political parties and candidates in the competition for seats in parliament. Electability is measured by how much of a political party or candidates chosen by voters, but in determining the choice voters will have their own perception and assessment against a political party or candidate. Political culture , the level of political participation and voting behavior be the determining factor of a political party or candidate shall be elected by the voters or even not selected. So that voters become a major actor in the legislative elections. Purpose of this study was to determine and describe electability political parties and candidates in the Central Java provincial assembly constituency 1 (Unggaran , Kendal , Semarang and Salatiga) for the legislative elections of 2014 (viewed from the perspective of voters view). Sampling method in this study using a multistage random sampling with a sample of 400 respondents consisting of the voters who have registered as voters for the legislative elections of 2014 remain. The analysis technique used in this study is a descriptive analysis , frequencies analysis and crosstab analysis. The result show that the public has an ideal candidate criteria based perspective view of voters and political parties electability is not directly proportional to the electability candidates
A review of selected neighbourhood sustainability assessment frameworks using the Bellagio STAMP
Purpose
The neighbourhood sustainability assessment frameworks through which a proposed neighbourhood development can be evaluated against an array of sustainability indicators began to gain prominence in the first decade of the twenty-first century. However, how these frameworks align with the Bellagio STAMP is an area yet to be examined by existing studies to inform their better development and usage in the delivery of sustainable neighbourhoods. The purpose of this paper is to review selected neighbourhood sustainability assessment frameworks using the Bellagio STAMP with the aim of identifying areas for improvement, while also exploring the possibilities of adopting the Bellagio STAMP as a consensus approach and reference to sustainability assessment at the neighbourhood level.
Design/methodology/approach
Adopting document analysis as a data collection method, the paper reviews BREEAM communities, LEED Neighbourhood Development, Pearl community rating system and Green Star communities using the Bellagio STAMP.
Findings
Findings from the study revealed that some of the selected assessment frameworks align partially with the Bellagio STAMP in their development, while areas for improvement were identified.
Research limitations/implications
The study recommends that the Bellagio STAMP could offer helpful guidelines and procedure in conceptualising sustainability assessment at the neighbourhood level especially in developing countries where such a framework is yet to be conceived.
Originality/value
This study adds to the sustainability assessment literature by operationalising the Bellagio STAMP leading to its better understanding and application in sustainability assessment either in practice or in theory
Holistic assessment of sustainable urban development
Introducing the SUE-MoT (metrics, models and toolkits for whole-life sustainable urban development) series, this paper highlights some of the barriers that need to be addressed if the vision for holistic assessment is to be realised. The complexities of sustainability assessment raised in this paper will be further discussed in detail in the SUE-MoT series of papers that will be published in forthcoming issues of this journal. This paper highlights the priorities to address when assessment tools are presented to decision makers of urban development projects. This discussion is limited to the issues, values and solutions in the UK context
Exploring the role of materials in policy change: innovation in low energy housing in the UK
There remains uncertainty in models of the policy process about how and when radical change takes place. Most policy authors focus on explaining incremental change, and yet in practice a pattern of change described as punctuated equilibrium has been observed, with periods of stability interspersed with periods of rapid, abrupt change. It is argued here that the influence of materials and technologies—the substance of policy—must be incorporated into models of the policy process in order to help further our understanding of radical change. Concepts from science and technology studies concerning the inseparability of social and technical spheres are used to explore how people and materials interact to create opportunities for radical change. These ideas are particularly relevant to policy sectors comprising durable, capital-intensive infrastructure, such as housing. Drawing on examples from the UK housing sector, ideas about policy networks and large technical systems are synthesised to develop a more holistic, interdisciplinary account of policy change
Renewable energy in remote communities
This article is the result of a competitively tendered University-funded project, this brings together two major Government Policy areas: sustainable communities and use of carbon fuels, and is aimed at influencing the policy debate on the difficulties of linking remote communities to renewable energy production because of poor distribution networks. Linkage with the Sustainable Communities agenda is an essential ingredient, as the proposal is that the renewable energy technologies will be installed and maintained by the communities themselves
Turning point: Fostering relationships, advancing education, and changing lives of foster care youth
Research shows that foster care youth have “poorer mental and physical health, are more likely to be involved with the legal system, and are at a higher risk of being engaged in substance abuse” than children who are not in the foster care system.1 This paper will address how mentoring programs such as Eastern Michigan University’s Write-Link Community Connections and Student-to-Student Higher Learning Initiative (SSHLI) can increase the success rate of foster care adolescents once they age out of the system by having a significant impact on their future careers, while also determining what factors make these programs successful. Based on the results, this paper will also recommend the need for a third program dubbed Turning Point, which is proposed to start through EMU’s Public Relations Student Society of America Chapter (PRSSA). Turning Point encompasses certain aspects of both Write-Link and SSHLI that will further inspire former foster care youth to pursue higher education
