Homo Sociologicus : neither a Rational nor an Irrational Idiot
As the social sciences deal with macrophenomena which are caused by individual human actions, they have to use a theory of human behaviour. They use basically three types of theory: the rational-utilitarian theory, the causalist theory which sees behaviour as caused by social, cultural or biological forces, and the «rational psychology» in Nisbet's sense. The three theories are important in the sense that they have shown their capacity to explain convincingly puzzling phenomena. Type I and II theories have been claimed to be potentially general. They are not since there are familiar phenomena they are unable to explain. Type III can by contrast be claimed to be general. Amartya Sen has made the point that the rational-utilitarian theory treats human beings as rational idiots. Type II treats them as irrational idiots. These aggressive metaphors draw the attention on the fact that human beings answer the situations they are confronted to by devising systems of arguments which they perceive as strong: by being cognitively rational.
In this autobiographic work, Raymond Boudon reviews his trajectory from his beginning as a student at the École Normale Supérieure to the last stages of his career.
The diversity of sociology can be captured with the help of four ideal types. First is cameral or informative sociology: that which produces data and analyses oriented towards decision- makers. Second is critical sociology, which identifies the defects of society and proposes remedies for them. Third is sociology which aims to arouse emotions by describing social phenomena in a vivid fashion: it can be characterized as expressive. A fourth type, the cognitive type, sees the explanation of puzzling social phenomena as its objective. The four orientations characterize contemporary as well as classical sociology but are not equally valuable. Tocqueville, Weber, or Durkheim illustrate the fourth type, but various factors today have caused the other three to expand at its expense. As a consequence of this diversity within sociology and the trend away from the cognitive type, scepticism about the discipline has grown in recent years
“Analytical sociology” and the explanation of beliefs
Many sociological works appear as being particularly illuminating, i.e. as able to explain puzzling social phenomena, because they follow three basic rules common to all scientific disciplines. These rules are at the root of the sociological paradigm becoming popular today in Europe under the label “analytical sociology”. But they identify a stream of sociological research that appeared notably with Weber’s and Durkheim’s work. These three rules are to a great extent responsible for the scientific strength of their respective work. They are crucial notably as far as the sociological explanation of collective beliefs, both representational and normative, is concerned, as examples drawn from the work of classical and modern social scientists illustrate. A special attention will be given to the beliefs that give a strong feeling of strangeness and for this reason were explored by many sociologists and anthropologists, as the beliefs in the efficiency of magical rituals.
Peut-on espĂ©rer dĂ©passer ces clivages ?Pareto’s distinction between “logical” and “non-logical” actions reappears most often under other words, but remains of utmost importance for contemporary social sciences. The distinction takes the role of an organizing principle. Thus rational choice theory, the hart of economic theory, has extended its influence on sociology. As to the traditional sociological theory that insists on explaining human behavior by social determinism, it seduces the so-called “alternative economists”. Is it possible to outweigh these cleavagesÂ
