Fluctuation Analysis of Human Electroencephalogram
The scaling behaviors of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) time series are
studied using detrended fluctuation analysis. Two scaling regions are found in
nearly every channel for all subjects examined. The scatter plot of the scaling
exponents for all channels (up to 129) reveals the complicated structure of a
subject's brain activity. Moment analyses are performed to extract the gross
features of all the scaling exponents, and another universal scaling behavior
is identified. A one-parameter description is found to characterize the
fluctuation properties of the nonlinear behaviors of the brain dynamics.Comment: 4 pages in RevTeX + 6 figures in ep
Moisture resistance of SU-8 and KMPR as structural material for integrated gaseous detectors
This paper treats the moisture resistance of SU-8 and KMPR, two photoresists considered as structural material in microsystems. Our experiments focus on the moisture resistance of newly developed radiation imaging detectors containing these resists. Since these microsystems will be used unpackaged, they are susceptible to all kinds of environmental conditions. Already after one day of exposure to a humid condition the structural integrity and adhesion of SU-8 structures, measured by a shear test is drastically reduced. KMPR photoresist shows much stronger moisture resistance properties, making it a suitable alternative in our application. © 2008 Elsevier Science. All rights reserved
The AMBRE Project: Stellar Parameterisation of the ESO:UVES archived spectra
The AMBRE Project is a collaboration between the European Southern
Observatory (ESO) and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) that has been
established in order to carry out the determination of stellar atmospheric
parameters for the archived spectra of four ESO spectrographs.
The analysis of the UVES archived spectra for their stellar parameters has
been completed in the third phase of the AMBRE Project. From the complete
ESO:UVES archive dataset that was received covering the period 2000 to 2010,
51921 spectra for the six standard setups were analysed. The AMBRE analysis
pipeline uses the stellar parameterisation algorithm MATISSE to obtain the
stellar atmospheric parameters. The synthetic grid is currently constrained to
FGKM stars only.
Stellar atmospheric parameters are reported for 12,403 of the 51,921 UVES
archived spectra analysed in AMBRE:UVES. This equates to ~23.9% of the sample
and ~3,708 stars. Effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity and alpha
element to iron ratio abundances are provided for 10,212 spectra (~19.7%),
while at least effective temperature is provided for the remaining 2,191
spectra. Radial velocities are reported for 36,881 (~71.0%) of the analysed
archive spectra. Typical external errors of sigmaTeff~110dex,
sigmalogg~0.18dex, sigma[M/H]~0.13dex, and sigma[alpha/Fe]~0.05dex with some
reported variation between giants and dwarfs and between setups are reported.
UVES is used to observe an extensive collection of stellar and non-stellar
objects all of which have been included in the archived dataset provided to OCA
by ESO. The AMBRE analysis extracts those objects which lie within the FGKM
parameter space of the AMBRE slow rotating synthetic spectra grid. Thus by
homogeneous blind analysis AMBRE has successfully extracted and parameterised
the targeted FGK stars (23.9% of the analysed sample) from within the ESO:UVES

Intersection between class and gender and its effect on the quality of employment in Chile

del empleo en Chile. La medida de posición de clase utilizada está basada en la propuesta de
Erik O. Wright y la calidad del empleo en una medida multidimensional, que incluye un Ăndice
de condiciones objetivas de empleo y dos Ăndices de condiciones subjetivas (motivaciĂłn en
el trabajo y percepciĂłn del control sobre el proceso de trabajo). Los resultados demuestran
que la clase y el género determinan diferencias significativas en la calidad objetiva y subjetiva
del empleo. Sin embargo, los datos también indican que el género (particularmente, el
hecho de ser mujer) no actúa necesariamente como “amplificador” de las desigualdades
de clase observadas en el mercado laboral. A partir de esto, al final del artĂculo se plantean
algunas reflexiones sobre cómo opera la intersección entre clase y género en el mercado
laboral chileno.This study explores the impact of the intersection between class and gender on the quality
of employment in Chile. The method used to measure social class position is based on the
work of Erik O. Wright, while, for the quality of employment, a multidimensional measurement
was used, including one index for objective working conditions and two indices for subjective
ones (motivation on the job and the perception of control over work processes). The results
demonstrate that class and gender give rise to signifcant differences in objective and
subjective job quality. However, the data also indicate that gender (more specifcally, the fact
of being female) does not necessarily amplify the class-based inequalities observed in the
labour market. Drawing on these fndings, a number of thoughts about how the class/gender
intersection operates in the Chilean labour market are shared in the fnal section of this studyhttp://hdl.handle.net/11362/4079
Relative Entropy and Holography
Relative entropy between two states in the same Hilbert space is a
fundamental statistical measure of the distance between these states. Relative
entropy is always positive and increasing with the system size. Interestingly,
for two states which are infinitesimally different to each other, vanishing of
relative entropy gives a powerful equation for the first
order variation of the entanglement entropy and the expectation
value of the \modu Hamiltonian . We evaluate relative entropy between
the vacuum and other states for spherical regions in the AdS/CFT framework. We
check that the relevant equations and inequalities hold for a large class of
states, giving a strong support to the holographic entropy formula. We
elaborate on potential uses of the equation for vacuum
