A Curvature Principle for the interaction between universes
We propose a Curvature Principle to describe the dynamics of interacting
universes in a multi-universe scenario and show, in the context of a simplified
model, how interaction drives the cosmological constant of one of the universes
toward a vanishingly small value. We also conjecture on how the proposed
Curvature Principle suggests a solution for the entropy paradox of a universe
where the cosmological constant vanishes.Comment: Essay selected for an honorable mention by the Gravity Research

Generalized nonuniform dichotomies and local stable manifolds
We establish the existence of local stable manifolds for semiflows generated
by nonlinear perturbations of nonautonomous ordinary linear differential
equations in Banach spaces, assuming the existence of a general type of
nonuniform dichotomy for the evolution operator that contains the nonuniform
exponential and polynomial dichotomies as a very particular case. The family of
dichotomies considered allow situations for which the classical Lyapunov
exponents are zero. Additionally, we give new examples of application of our
stable manifold theorem and study the behavior of the dynamics under
perturbations.Comment: 18 pages. New version with minor corrections and an additional

Scale Factor Duality: A Quantum Cosmological Approach
We consider the minisuperspace model arising from the lowest order string
effective action containing the graviton and the dilaton and study solutions of
the resulting Wheeler-Dewitt equation. The scale factor duality symmetry is
discussed in the context of our quantum cosmological model.Comment: 10 pages, plain tex, uses panda.tex (appended
Generalized Chaplygin Gas Model: Dark Energy - Dark Matter Unification and CMBR Constraints
The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model allows for an unified description
of the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe and the evolution of energy
density perturbations. This dark energy - dark matter unification is achieved
through an exotic background fluid whose equation of state is given by , where is a positive constant and .
Stringent constraints on the model parameters can be obtained from recent WMAP
and BOOMERanG bounds on the locations of the first few peaks and troughs of the
Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) power spectrum as well as SNe Ia
data.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; essay selected for an honorable mention by the

Supergravity Inflation on the Brane
We study N=1 Supergravity inflation in the context of the braneworld
scenario. Particular attention is paid to the problem of the onset of inflation
at sub-Planckian field values and the ensued inflationary observables. We find
that the so-called -problem encountered in supergravity inspired
inflationary models can be solved in the context of the braneworld scenario,
for some range of the parameters involved. Furthermore, we obtain an upper
bound on the scale of the fifth dimension, M_5 \lsim 10^{-3} M_P, in case the
inflationary potential is quadratic in the inflaton field, . If the
inflationary potential is cubic in , consistency with observational data
requires that .Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev.
The Revival of the Unified Dark Energy-Dark Matter Model ?
We consider the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) proposal for unification of
dark energy and dark matter and show that it admits an unique decomposition
into dark energy and dark matter components once phantom-like dark energy is
excluded. Within this framework, we study structure formation and show that
difficulties associated to unphysical oscillations or blow-up in the matter
power spectrum can be circumvented. Furthermore, we show that the dominance of
dark energy is related to the time when energy density fluctuations start
deviating from the linear behaviour.Comment: 6 pages, 4 eps figures, Revtex4 style. New References are added. Some

Instabilities in neutrino-plasma density waves
One examines the interaction and possible resonances between supernova
neutrinos and electron plasma waves. The neutrino phase space distribution and
its boundary regions are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the boundary
regions are too wide to produce non-linear resonant effects. The growth or
damping rates induced by neutrinos are always proportional to the neutrino flux
and .Comment: 9 pages, a few words modified to match PRD publicatio
N=1 Supergravity Chaotic Inflation in the Braneworld Scenario
We study a N=1 Supergravity chaotic inflationary model, in the context of the
braneworld scenario. It is shown that successful inflation and reheating
consistent with phenomenological constraints can be achieved via the new terms
in the Friedmann equation arising from brane physics. Interestingly, the model
satisfies observational bounds with sub-Planckian field values, implying that
chaotic inflation on the brane is free from the well known difficulties
associated with the presence of higher order non-renormalizable terms in the
superpotential. A bound on the mass scale of the fifth dimension, M_5 \gsim
1.3 \times 10^{-6} M_P, is obtained from the requirement that the reheating
temperature be higher than the temperature of the electroweak phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 1 Table, Revtex
Compactification, Vacuum Energy and Quintessence
We study the possibility that the vacuum energy density of scalar and
internal-space gauge fields arising from the process of dimensional reduction
of higher dimensional gravity theories plays the role of quintessence. We show
that, for the multidimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system compactified on a topology, there are classically stable solutions such
that the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe at present can be
accounted for without upsetting structure formation scenarios or violating
observational bounds on the vacuum energy density.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, Third Award in 1999 Essay Competition of the Gravity

Testing the interaction of dark energy to dark matter through the analysis of virial relaxation of clusters Abell Clusters A586 and A1689 using realistic density profiles
Interaction between dark energy and dark matter is probed through deviation
from the virial equilibrium for two relaxed clusters: A586 and A1689. The
evaluation of the virial equilibrium is performed using realistic density
profiles. The virial ratios found for the more realistic density profiles are
consistent with the absence of interaction.Comment: 16pp 1 fig; accepted by GeR
