Study considers problems encountered in using 4 pi-recoil counters for neutron spectra measurement. Emphasis is placed on calibration, shape discrimination, variation of W, the average energy loss per ion pair, and the effects of differentiation on the intrinsic counter resolution

Preliminary evaluation of the role of K2S in MHD hot stream seed recovery

    Get PDF
Results are presented for recent analytical and experimental studies of the role of K2S in MHD hot stream seed recovery. The existing thermodynamic data base was found to contain large uncertainties and to be nonexistent for vapor phase K2S. Knudsen cell mass spectrometric experiments were undertaken to determine the vapor species in equilibrium with K2S(c). K atoms and S2 molecules ere found to be the major vapor phase species in vacuum, accounting for greater than 99 percent of the vapor phase. Combustion gas deposition studies using No. 2 Diesel fuel were also undertaken and revealed that condensed phase K2SO3 may potentially be an important compound in the MHD stream at near-stoichiometric combustion

    Supercatalysis

    Get PDF
We show that entanglement-assisted transformations of bipartite entangled states can be more efficient than catalysis [D. Jonathan and M. B. Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 3566 (1999)}, i.e., given two incomparable bipartite states not only can the transformation be enabled by performing collective operations with an auxiliary entangled state, but the entanglement of the auxiliary state itself can be enhanced. We refer to this phenomenon as supercatalysis. We provide results on the properties of supercatalysis and its relationship with catalysis. In particular, we obtain a useful necessary and sufficient condition for catalysis, provide several sufficient conditions for supercatalysis and study the extent to which entanglement of the auxiliary state can be enhanced via supercatalysis.Comment: Latex, 5 page

Angular Power Spectrum of the Microwave Background Anisotropy seen by the COBE Differential Microwave Radiometer

The angular power spectrum estimator developed by Peebles (1973) and Hauser & Peebles (1973) has been modified and applied to the 2 year maps produced by the COBE DMR. The power spectrum of the real sky has been compared to the power spectra of a large number of simulated random skies produced with noise equal to the observed noise and primordial density fluctuation power spectra of power law form, with P(k)knP(k) \propto k^n. Within the limited range of spatial scales covered by the COBE DMR, corresponding to spherical harmonic indices 3 \leq \ell \lsim 30, the best fitting value of the spectral index is n=1.250.45+0.4n = 1.25^{+0.4}_{-0.45} with the Harrison-Zeldovich value n=1n = 1 approximately 0.5σ\sigma below the best fit. For 3 \leq \ell \lsim 19, the best fit is n=1.460.44+0.39n = 1.46^{+0.39}_{-0.44}. Comparing the COBE DMR ΔT/T\Delta T/T at small \ell to the ΔT/T\Delta T/T at 50\ell \approx 50 from degree scale anisotropy experiments gives a smaller range of acceptable spectral indices which includes n=1n = 1.Comment: 22 pages of LaTex using aaspp.sty and epsf.sty with appended Postscript figures, COBE Preprint 94-0

    Cryogenic thermal control technology summaries

    Get PDF
A summarization and categorization is presented of the pertinent literature associated with cryogenic thermal control technology having potential application to in-orbit fluid transfer systems and/or associated space storage. Initially, a literature search was conducted to obtain pertinent documents for review. Reports determined to be of primary significance were summarized in detail. Each summary, where applicable, consists of; (1) report identification, (2) objective(s) of the work, (3) description of pertinent work performed, (4)major results, and (5) comments of the reviewer (GD/C). Specific areas covered are; (1) multilayer insulation of storage tanks with and without vacuum jacketing, (2) other insulation such as foams, shadow shields, microspheres, honeycomb, vent cooling and composites, (3) vacuum jacketed and composite fluid lines, and (4) low conductive tank supports and insulation penetrations. Reports which were reviewed and not summarized, along with reasons for not summarizing, are also listed

Roll diffusion bonding of titanium alloy panels

    Get PDF
Roll diffusion bonding technique is used for fabricating T-stiffened panel assemblies from titanium alloy. The single unit fabrication exhibits excellent strength characteristics under tensile and compressive loads. This program is applied to structures in which weight/strength ratio and integral construction are important considerations

Gamma Ray Bursts with peculiar temporal asymmetry

    Get PDF
Based on the study of temporal asymmetry of 631 gamma ray bursts from the BATSE 3B catalog by Link and Epstein [Ap J 466, 764 (1996)], we identify the population of bursts whose rising times are longer than their decays, thus showing atypical profiles. We analyse their sky distribution, morphology, time-space clustering and other average properties and compare them with those associated with the bulk of the bursts. We show how most of the peculiar bursts analysed are consistent with recent fireball models, but a fraction of bursts (4\sim 4% of the total sample) appear to be inconsistent.Comment: mn style (included in the submission), 4 figures that must be printed separately. Hexagonal ABCABC as semiconducting ferroelectrics

We use a first-principles rational-design approach to identify a previously-unrecognized class of ferroelectric materials in the P63mcP63mc LiGaGe structure type. We calculate structural parameters, polarization and ferroelectric well depths both for reported and as-yet hypothetical representatives of this class. Our results provide guidance for the experimental realization and further investigation of high-performance materials suitable for practical applications.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 3 table

    A classical analogue of entanglement

    Get PDF
We show that quantum entanglement has a very close classical analogue, namely secret classical correlations. The fundamental analogy stems from the behavior of quantum entanglement under local operations and classical communication and the behavior of secret correlations under local operations and public communication. A large number of derived analogies follow. In particular teleportation is analogous to the one-time-pad, the concept of ``pure state'' exists in the classical domain, entanglement concentration and dilution are essentially classical secrecy protocols, and single copy entanglement manipulations have such a close classical analog that the majorization results are reproduced in the classical setting. This analogy allows one to import questions from the quantum domain into the classical one, and vice-versa, helping to get a better understanding of both. Also, by identifying classical aspects of quantum entanglement it allows one to identify those aspects of entanglement which are uniquely quantum mechanical.Comment: 13 pages, references update
