An eclipsing binary distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud accurate to 2 per cent
In the era of precision cosmology it is essential to determine the Hubble
Constant with an accuracy of 3% or better. Currently, its uncertainty is
dominated by the uncertainty in the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) which as the second nearest galaxy serves as the best anchor point of the
cosmic distance scale. Observations of eclipsing binaries offer a unique
opportunity to precisely and accurately measure stellar parameters and
distances. The eclipsing binary method was previously applied to the LMC but
the accuracy of the distance results was hampered by the need to model the
bright, early-type systems used in these studies. Here, we present distance
determinations to eight long-period, late- type eclipsing systems in the LMC
composed of cool giant stars. For such systems we can accurately measure both
the linear and angular sizes of their components and avoid the most important
problems related to the hot early-type systems. Our LMC distance derived from
these systems is demonstrably accurate to 2.2 % (49.97 +/- 0.19 (statistical)
+/- 1.11 (systematic) kpc) providing a firm base for a 3 % determination of the
Hubble Constant, with prospects for improvement to 2 % in the future.Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures, 13 tables, published in the Nature, a part of

The Distances of the Magellanic Clouds
The present status of our knowledge of the distances to the Magellanic Clouds
is evaluated from a post-Hipparcos perspective. After a brief summary of the
effects of structure, reddening, age and metallicity, the primary distance
indicators for the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed: The SN 1987A ring,
Cepheids, RR Lyraes, Mira variables, and Eclipsing Binaries. Distances derived
via these methods are weighted and combined to produce final "best" estimates

Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations at large transverse momenta in and Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV
Results on high transverse momentum charged particle emission with respect to
the reaction plane are presented for Au+Au collisions at =
200 GeV. Two- and four-particle correlations results are presented as well as a
comparison of azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions to those in at
the same energy. Elliptic anisotropy, , is found to reach its maximum at
GeV/c, then decrease slowly and remain significant up to
-- 10 GeV/c. Stronger suppression is found in the back-to-back
high- particle correlations for particles emitted out-of-plane compared to
those emitted in-plane. The centrality dependence of at intermediate

Azimuthal anisotropy in Au+Au collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV
The results from the STAR Collaboration on directed flow (v_1), elliptic flow
(v_2), and the fourth harmonic (v_4) in the anisotropic azimuthal distribution
of particles from Au+Au collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV are summarized and
compared with results from other experiments and theoretical models. Results
for identified particles are presented and fit with a Blast Wave model.
Different anisotropic flow analysis methods are compared and nonflow effects
are extracted from the data. For v_2, scaling with the number of constituent
quarks and parton coalescence is discussed. For v_4, scaling with v_2^2 and

Speaking with a forked tongue about multilingualism in the language policy of a South African university
As part of a broader student campaign for ‘free decolonized education’, protests
over language policies at select South African universities between 2015 and 2016
belied widespread positive appraisals of these policies, and revealed what is possibly
an internal contradiction of the campaign. The discourse prior to the protests (e.g.
“excellent language policies but problematic implementation”), during the protests
(e.g. silence over the role of indigenous African languages in the “Afrikaans must
fall” versus “Afrikaans must stay” contestations), and after the protests (e.g. English
becoming a primary medium in some institutional policy reviews) warrant attention
to critical literacy in language policy scholarship. Based on a theoretical account of
speaking with a forked tongue, this article analyzes the language policy text of one
South African university. The analysis suggests, simultaneously, why similar policies
have tended to be positively appraised, why students’ calls for policy revisions
were justified, but why the changes clamoured for arguably amount to complicity in
self-harm

The use of pure and impure placebo interventions in primary care - a qualitative approach
Background: Placebos play an important role in clinical trials and several surveys have shown that they are also common in daily practice. Previous research focused primarily on the frequency of placebo use in outpatient care. Our aim was to explore physicians' views on the use of placebos in daily practice, whereby distinction was made between pure placebos (substances with no pharmacological effect, e.g. sugar pills) and impure placebos (substances with pharmacological effect but not on the condition being treated, e.g. antibiotics in viral infections or vitamins). Methods: We performed semi-structured interviews with a sample of twelve primary care physicians (PCPs). The interview addressed individual definitions of a placebo, attitudes towards placebos and the participants' reasons for prescribing them. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The definition of a placebo given by the majority of the PCPs in our study was one which actually only describes pure placebos. This definition, combined with the fact that most impure placebos were not regarded as placebos at all, means that most of the participating PCPs were not aware of the extent to which placebos are used in daily practice. The PCPs stated that they use placebos (both pure and impure) mainly in the case of non-severe diseases for which there was often no satisfactory somatic explanation. According to the PCPs, cases like this are often treated by complementary and alternative therapies and these, too, are associated with placebo effects. However, all PCPs felt that the ethical aspects of such treatment were unclear and they were unsure as to how to communicate the use of placebos to their patients. Most of them would appreciate ethical guidelines on how to deal with this issue. Conclusions: Many PCPs seem to be unaware that some of the drugs they prescribe are classified as impure placebos. Perceptions of effectiveness and doubts about the legal and ethical aspects of the use of placebos by PCPs may discourage their application. Dissemination of guidelines and consensus papers may be one approach, but it has to be acknowledged that the topic itself is in conflict with the PCPs' perception of themselves as professional and reliable physicians
Nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW: a near-infrared fluorescent tracer with optimal retention in the sentinel lymph node
Purpose: At present, the only approved fluorescent tracer for clinical near-infrared fluorescence-guided sentinel node (SN) detection is indocyanine green (ICG), but the use of this tracer is limited due to its poor retention in the SN resulting in the detection of higher tier nodes. We describe the development and characterization of a next-generation fluorescent tracer, nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW that has optimal properties for clinical SN detection Methods: The fluorescent dye IRDye 800CW was covalently coupled to colloidal human serum albumin (HSA) particles present in the labelling kit Nanocoll in a manner compliant with current Good Manufacturing Practice. Characterization of nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW included determination of conjugation efficiency, purity, stability and particle size. Quantum yield was determined in serum and compared to that of ICG. For in vivo evaluation a lymphogenic metastatic tumour model in rabbits was used. Fluorescence imaging was performed directly after peritumoral injection of nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW or the reference ICG/HSA (i.e. ICG mixed with HSA), and was repeated after 24 h, after which fluorescent lymph nodes were excised. Results: Conjugation of IRDye 800CW to nanocolloidal albumin was always about 50% efficient and resulted in a stable and pure product without affecting the particle size of the nanocolloidal albumin. The quantum yield of nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW was similar to that of ICG. In vivo evaluation revealed noninvasive detection of the SN within 5 min of injection of either nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW or ICG/HSA. No decrease in the fluorescence signal from SN was observed 24 h after injection of the nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW, while a strong decrease or complete disappearance of the fluorescence signal was seen 24 h after injection of ICG/HSA. Fluorescence-guided SN biopsy was very easy. Conclusion: Nanocolloidal albumin-IRDye 800CW is a promising fluorescent tracer with optimal kinetic features for SN detection. © The Author(s) 2012
Local Adaptation of Aboveground Herbivores towards Plant Phenotypes Induced by Soil Biota
Background: Soil biota may trigger strong physiological responses in plants and consequently induce distinct phenotypes. Plant phenotype, in turn, has a strong impact on herbivore performance. Here, we tested the hypothesis that aboveground herbivores are able to adapt to plant phenotypes induced by soil biota. Methodology and Principal Findings: We bred spider mites for 15 generations on snap beans with three different belowground biotic interactions: (i) no biota (to serve as control), (ii) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and (ii) root-feeding nematodes. Subsequently, we conducted a reciprocal selection experiment using these spider mites, which had been kept on the differently treated plants. Belowground treatments induced changes in plant biomass, nutrient composition and water content. No direct chemical defence through cyanogenesis was detected in any of the plant groups. Growth rates of spider mites were higher on the ecotypes on which they were bred for 15 generations, although the statistical significance disappeared for mites from the nematode treatment when corrected for all multiple comparisons. Conclusion/Significance: These results demonstrate that belowground biota may indeed impose selection on the aboveground insect herbivores mediated by the host plant. Dutch Oncology COVID-19 consortium:Outcome of COVID-19 in patients with cancer in a nationwide cohort study
Aim of the study: Patients with cancer might have an increased risk for severe outcome of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To identify risk factors associated with a worse outcome of COVID-19, a nationwide registry was developed for patients with cancer and COVID-19. Methods: This observational cohort study has been designed as a quality of care registry and is executed by the Dutch Oncology COVID-19 Consortium (DOCC), a nationwide collaboration of oncology physicians in the Netherlands. A questionnaire has been developed to collect pseudonymised patient data on patients' characteristics, cancer diagnosis and treatment. All patients with COVID-19 and a cancer diagnosis or treatment in the past 5 years are eligible. Results: Between March 27th and May 4th, 442 patients were registered. For this first analysis, 351 patients were included of whom 114 patients died. In multivariable analyses, age ≥65 years (p < 0.001), male gender (p = 0.035), prior or other malignancy (p = 0.045) and active diagnosis of haematological malignancy (p = 0.046) or lung cancer (p = 0.003) were independent risk factors for a fatal outcome of COVID-19. In a subgroup analysis of patients with active malignancy, the risk for a fatal outcome was mainly determined by tumour type (haematological malignancy or lung cancer) and age (≥65 years). Conclusion: The findings in this registry indicate that patients with a haematological malignancy or lung cancer have an increased risk of a worse outcome of COVID-19. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these vulnerable patients should avoid exposure to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, whereas treatment adjustments and prioritising vaccination, when available, should also be considered
