    Get PDF
This article is based on a fieldwork project conducted by the authors in the Muğla region of western Turkey. The region is the locale for a significant level of settlement by British people, within the wider context of settlement by groups of other EU nationals in western Turkey. Based on a series of interviews with British settlers and Turkish locals, it examines the factors which affect the process of legal adaptation of the former group. It identifies and discusses the place of British settlers within the larger Turkish legal order, their integration into Turkish life, and the extent to which different socio-legal disabilities and advantages affect this process. The article also casts some light on the extent to which, given the level of British immigration into the area, Turkish officialdom is prepared for their presence

THE LEGACIES OF NATO INTERVENTIONS IN THE BALKANS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF NEW INTERVENTIONISM

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the analysis of the NATO interventions in the Balkans fromthe perspective of new interventionism. NATO has been considered one of the basicand leading components of peace and stability in the region - especially after Kosovo War. Besides, as the role of NATO in Atlantic security andworld politics has been transformed after the Cold War and its strategic concept is renewed since September 11; security in the Balkans is gaining more and more importance. NATO has interfered into the conflicts in the Balkans with military means and after theconflicts; it maintains peacekeeping missions in the region. Can NATO's Balkan interventions be evaluated as legitimate within the framework of humanitarian intervention? What are the legacies and significance of NATO interventions for providing enduring peace and stability in the Balkans? Did the presence of NATO contribute to create the necessary conditions for human rights and democracy inthe region - especially for the adaptation purposes of the regional countries to the new international system in Post-Cold War era? Or did the big powers use the humanitarian intervention to shape the developments in terms of their interests andpolicies? While trying to find answers of these questions, I will use the perspective of new interventionism. Firstly, I will discuss the relevant articles and chapters of Charter of the United Nations in terms of use of force to evaluate the legalities of the humanitarian interventions. And afterwards, I analyze the Kosovo and Bosnia interventions from this point of view

The effects of inquiry-based experiment-integrated science games among secondary school students

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate how inquiry-based experiment-integrated science games affect the achievement and scientific process skills of 5th grade students. The topics of “Light and Sound” and “Electricity in Our Lives” were selected for the experiment. Two groups totaling 41 students participated. The research method consisted of a quasi-experimental design utilizing an experimental and control group. While 21 students in the experimental group played inquiry-based experiment-integrated science games developed by the researchers, no educational game was included in the lessons of the control group of 20 students. “Light and Sound Achievement Test”, “Electricity Achievement Test” and “Science Process Assessment” were applied to both groups in the form of a pre- and post-test. To analyze the data, independent t-test was used. Students in the experimental group were more successful than the control group in their scores for both achievement and scientific process skills. It can be inferred from the results that students develop better achievement and scientific process skills by playing science games. It is recommended that such games should be integrated into the science classroom
