Water-like hierarchy of anomalies in a continuous spherical shouldered potential
We investigate by molecular dynamics simulations a continuous isotropic
core-softened potential with attractive well in three dimensions, introduced by
Franzese [cond-mat/0703681, to appear on Journal of Molecular Liquids], that
displays liquid-liquid coexistence with a critical point and water-like density
anomaly. Here we find diffusion and structural anomalies. These anomalies occur
with the same hierarchy that characterizes water. Yet our analysis shows
differences with respect to the water case. Therefore, many of the anomalous
features of water could be present in isotropic systems with soft-core
attractive potentials, such as colloids or liquid metals, consistent with

Entropy, diffusivity and the energy landscape of a water-like fluid
Molecular dynamics simulations and instantaneous normal mode (INM) analysis
of a fluid with core-softened pair interactions and water-like liquid-state
anomalies are performed to obtain an understanding of the relationship between
thermodynamics, transport properties and the poten- tial energy landscape.
Rosenfeld-scaling of diffusivities with the thermodynamic excess and pair
correlation entropy is demonstrated for this model. The INM spectra are shown
to carry infor- mation about the dynamical consequences of the interplay
between length scales characteristic of anomalous fluids, such as bimodality of
the real and imaginary branches of the frequency distribu- tion. The INM
spectral information is used to partition the liquid entropy into two
contributions associated with the real and imaginary frequency modes; only the
entropy contribution from the imaginary branch captures the non-monotonic
behaviour of the excess entropy and diffusivity in the anomalous regime of the
fluid
Resistance of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), to cypermethrin in outbreak areas in Midwestern Brazil.
Population explosions of the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) have become a serious concern for livestock producers near sugarcane mills in some regions of Brazil due to the insect?s massive reproduction on sugarcane byproducts and waste. Despite the limited efficiency of insecticides for controlling stable fly outbreaks, producers still rely on chemical control to mitigate the alarming infestations in affected areas. This study evaluated the susceptibility of S. calcitrans populations to cypermethrin in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Stable flies were tested from three field populations and two colonies, established from flies previously collected at sugarcane mills. Wild flies were collected with Nzi traps in areas of sugarcane plantations. Both wild and colonized flies were exposed to eleven concentrations of cypermethrin in impregnated filter paper bioassays. All the populations proved to be resistant to cypermethrin, with resistance factors among field populations ranging from 6.8 to 38.6. The intensive use of insecticides has led to the development of pyrethroid resistance in stable fly populations in the proximities of sugarcane mills in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul
Inequalities for dealing with detector inefficiencies in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type experiments
In this article we show that the three-particle GHZ theorem can be
reformulated in terms of inequalities, allowing imperfect correlations due to
detector inefficiencies. We show quantitatively that taking into accout those
inefficiencies, the published results of the Innsbruck experiment support the

Current status of ticks and tick-host relationship in domestic and wild animals from Pantanal wetlands in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
This is a commented list of tick?s species collected on various wild and domestic animals, including the reports on scientifi c literature for the studied region. Most of animals were small or medium mammals. Carnivores were the main taxa group examined. Although, the pampas deer (Ozotocerus bezoarticus) and giant anteater (Mymercophaga tridactyla) also has a good representation on study. Among domestic animals, dogs, horses and cattle were examined. Summing up, 18 tick species were listed for the region. Sixteen were hard ticks (Ixodidae) and two soft ticks (Argasidae). Amblyomma sculptum was the most common and abundant hard tick. Ornithodoros rostratus (Argasidae) was very abundant, being the more important Argasidae tick on the study region. Avaliação do Albedo em áreas de plantio da cana-de-açúcar.
A cana-de-açúcar é uma cultura de grande importância econômica no Brasil. A área de estudo deste trabalho é a região nordeste do Estado de São Paulo, maior produtor de cana-de-açúcar do Brasil, reconhecida como uma área com alta concentração da cultura. Diante da tendência de eliminação da prática de queima da cana-de-açúcar, foi avaliada a área de cultivo da cana crua, ou seja, cana colhida sem queima antes do corte. Para obtenção dos valores de albedo, foi utilizado o algoritmo SAFER, desenvolvido por Teixeira (2012), a partir de dados obtidos a com o uso de sensoriamento remoto em imagens do sensor MODIS. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que o albedo varia de acordo com o desenvolvimento da cultura ao longo do ano, assim como a presença da palha, resultante do modo de colheita, que acarreta mudança na cobertura do solo e influencia no albedo
Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) outbreaks: current situation and future outlook with emphasis on Brazil.
The stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) has historically been a pest of dairy cattle and feedlots due to the availability of decaying plant matter mixed with animal excrements in such production systems. In the last few decades, stable fly outbreaks have also been reported in pasture-raised beef cattle, usually associated with wastes accumulated from animal feeding during winter, the introduction of large-scale crop operations near cattle ranches, and/or the inadvertent use of organic fertilizers. Population explosions of Stomoxys flies may also have natural causes, affecting not only domestic and/or wild animals but also humans.
