    Tunneling Splittings in Mn12-Acetate Single Crystals

    A Landau-Zener multi-crossing method has been used to investigate the tunnel splittings in high quality Mn12_{12}-acetate single crystals in the pure quantum relaxation regime and for fields applied parallel to the magnetic easy axis. With this method several individual tunneling resonances have been studied over a broad range of time scales. The relaxation is found to be non-exponential and a distribution of tunnel splittings is inferred from the data. The distributions suggest that the inhomogeneity in the tunneling rates is due to disorder that produces a non-zero mean value of the average transverse anisotropy, such as in a solvent disorder model. Further, the effect of intermolecular dipolar interaction on the magnetic relaxation has been studied.Comment: Europhysics Letters (in press). 7 pages, including 3 figure

    Millikelvin magnetic relaxation measurements of alpha-Fe2O3 antiferromagnetic particles

    In this paper we report magnetic relaxation data for antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3 particles of 5 nm mean diameter in the temperature range 0.1 K to 25 K. The average spin value of these particles S=124 and the uniaxial anisotropy constant D=1.6x10^-2 K have been estimated from the experimental values of the blocking temperature and anisotropy field. The observed plateau in the magnetic viscosity from 3 K down to 100 mK agrees with the occurrence of spin tunneling from the ground state Sz = S. However, the scaling M vs Tln(nu t) is broken below 5 K, suggesting the occurrence of tunneling from excited states below this temperature.Comment: 4 pages (two columns), 4 figure

    Observation of a Distribution of Internal Transverse Magnetic Fields in a Mn12-Based Single Molecule Magnet

    A distribution of internal transverse magnetic fields has been observed in single molecule magnet (SMM) Mn12-BrAc in the pure magnetic quantum tunneling (MQT) regime. Magnetic relaxation experiments at 0.4 K are used to produce a hole in the distribution of transverse fields whose angle and depth depend on the orientation and amplitude of an applied transverse ``digging field.'' The presence of such transverse magnetic fields can explain the main features of resonant MQT in this material, including the tunneling rates, the form of the relaxation and the absence of tunneling selection rules. We propose a model in which the transverse fields originate from a distribution of tilts of the molecular magnetic easy axes.Comment: 4 page

    Magnetization and EPR studies of the single molecule magnet Ni4_4 with integrated sensors

    Integrated magnetic sensors that allow simultaneous EPR and magnetization measurements have been developed to study single molecule magnets. A high frequency microstrip resonator has been integrated with a micro-Hall effect magnetometer. EPR spectroscopy is used to determine the energy splitting between the low lying spin-states of a Ni4_4 single crystal, with an S=4 ground state, as a function of applied fields, both longitudinal and transverse to the easy axis at 0.4 K. Concurrent magnetization measurements show changes in spin-population associated with microwave absorption.     Asymmetric Berry-Phase Interference Patterns in a Single-Molecule Magnet

    A Mn4 single-molecule magnet displays asymmetric Berry-phase interference patterns in the transverse-field (HT) dependence of the magnetization tunneling probability when a longitudinal field (HL) is present, contrary to symmetric patterns observed for HL=0. Reversal of HL results in a reflection of the transverse-field asymmetry about HT=0, as expected on the basis of the time-reversal invariance of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which is responsible for the tunneling oscillations. A fascinating motion of Berry-phase minima within the transverse-field magnitude-direction phase space results from a competition between noncollinear magnetoanisotropy tensors at the two distinct Mn sites.Comment: 4 double-column page

    Linear viscoelastic properties of high reclaimed asphalt content mixes with biobinders

    The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content mixtures together with binders produced from renewable resources (biobinders) is one of the current challenges in pavement engineering research. On one hand, RA has been used for decades but there are still some concerns about its performance, especially when high contents are used (>30%). On the other hand, biobinders are relatively new materials which have to be deeply characterised and studied in order to develop good-practices for their use. In this paper, linear viscoelastic properties of biobinders and bio-mixtures manufactured with high-RA content and biobinders are analysed and discussed. High-modulus mixtures with 50% RA were selected for the mix design. Binders and mixtures were tested over a wide range of asphalt service temperatures and frequencies by means of DSR and two-point bending tests respectively. Results show that biobinders have an important effect on mixtures behaviour. However, no direct links between their linear viscoelastic properties were found. Bio-asphalt mixtures still need further development for commercial exploitation; however the take-away fact of this investigation is that it is possible to manufacture asphalt-like mixtures with acceptable viscoelastic properties while being composed only of RA and non-petroleum based binders

    International audienceSearch Engine Optimization reefers to the process of im- proving the position of a given website in a web search engine results. This is typically done by adding a set of parameters and metadata to the hypertext files of the website. As nowadays the majority of the web-content creators are non-experts, automation of the search en- gine optimization process becomes a necessity. On this regard, this paper presents a recommender system to improve search engine op- timization based on the site’s content and creator’s preferences. It exploits text analysis for labels and tags, artificial intelligence for deducing content intention and topics, and case-based reasoning for generating recommendations of parameters and metadata. Recom- mendations are given in natural language using a predefined set of sentences
