On the application of self-organizing neural networks in gas-liquid and gas-solid flow regime identification
One of the main problems associated with the transport and manipulation of multiphase flow is the existence of flow regimes, which have a strong influence on important parameters of operation. An example of this occurs in gas-liquid chemical reactors in which maximum coefficients of reaction can be attained by keeping a dispersed-bubbly flow regime to maximize the total interfacial area. Another example is the pneumatic conveying of solids in which the regimes are associated with safety and energy consumption. Thus, the ability to identify flow regimes automatically is very important, specially to maintain multiphase systems operating according to design conditions. This work assesses the use of a self-organizing map (neural network) adapted to the problem of regime identification in horizontal two-phase flows. In order to achieve extensive results, two different types of two-phase flows were considered: gas-solid and gas-liquid. Tests were made to verify the performance of the neural network model, using data collected at the experimental facilities of the Thermal and Fluid Engineering Laboratory of the University of São Paulo at São Carlos. Results show that the neural network is capable of correctly identifying the regimes. The error percentage is bigger when analyzing the same regime with flow rates different from the one used as training data emphasizing the importance of training signals choice
Analytical results for a Bessel function times Legendre polynomials class integrals
When treating problems of vector diffraction in electromagnetic theory, the
evaluation of the integral involving Bessel and associated Legendre functions
is necessary. Here we present the analytical result for this integral that will
make unnecessary numerical quadrature techniques or localized approximations.
The solution is presented using the properties of the Bessel and associated

Mass gap for gravity localized on Weyl thick branes
We study the properties of a previously found family of thick brane
configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time, a
non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory involving a geometric
scalar field. Thus the 5D theory describes gravity coupled to a
self-interacting scalar field which gives rise to the structure of the thick
branes. Analyzing the graviton spectrum for this class of models, we find that
a particularly interesting situation arises for a special case in which the 4D
graviton is separated from the KK gravitons by a mass gap. The corresponding
effective Schroedinger equation has a modified Poeschl-Teller potential and can
be solved exactly. Apart from the massless 4D graviton, it contains one massive
KK bound state, and the continuum spectrum of delocalized KK modes. We discuss
the mass hierarchy problem, and explicitly compute the corrections to Newton's

Optimization of supply diversity for the self-assembly of simple objects in two and three dimensions
The field of algorithmic self-assembly is concerned with the design and
analysis of self-assembly systems from a computational perspective, that is,
from the perspective of mathematical problems whose study may give insight into
the natural processes through which elementary objects self-assemble into more
complex ones. One of the main problems of algorithmic self-assembly is the
minimum tile set problem (MTSP), which asks for a collection of types of
elementary objects (called tiles) to be found for the self-assembly of an
object having a pre-established shape. Such a collection is to be as concise as
possible, thus minimizing supply diversity, while satisfying a set of stringent
constraints having to do with the termination and other properties of the
self-assembly process from its tile types. We present a study of what we think
is the first practical approach to MTSP. Our study starts with the introduction
of an evolutionary heuristic to tackle MTSP and includes results from extensive
experimentation with the heuristic on the self-assembly of simple objects in
two and three dimensions. The heuristic we introduce combines classic elements
from the field of evolutionary computation with a problem-specific variant of
Pareto dominance into a multi-objective approach to MTSP.Comment: Minor typos correcte

Private Outsourcing of Polynomial Evaluation and Matrix Multiplication using Multilinear Maps
{\em Verifiable computation} (VC) allows a computationally weak client to
outsource the evaluation of a function on many inputs to a powerful but
untrusted server. The client invests a large amount of off-line computation and
gives an encoding of its function to the server. The server returns both an
evaluation of the function on the client's input and a proof such that the
client can verify the evaluation using substantially less effort than doing the
evaluation on its own. We consider how to privately outsource computations
using {\em privacy preserving} VC schemes whose executions reveal no
information on the client's input or function to the server. We construct VC
schemes with {\em input privacy} for univariate polynomial evaluation and
matrix multiplication and then extend them such that the {\em function privacy}
is also achieved. Our tool is the recently developed {mutilinear maps}. The
proposed VC schemes can be used in outsourcing {private information retrieval

Topology and Signature Changes in Braneworlds
It has been believed that topology and signature change of the universe can
only happen accompanied by singularities, in classical, or instantons, in
quantum, gravity. In this note, we point out however that in the braneworld
context, such an event can be understood as a classical, smooth event. We
supply some explicit examples of such cases, starting from the
Dirac-Born-Infeld action. Topology change of the brane universe can be realised
by allowing self-intersecting branes. Signature change in a braneworld is made
possible in an everywhere Lorentzian bulk spacetime. In our examples, the
boundary of the signature change is a curvature singularity from the brane
point of view, but nevertheless that event can be described in a completely
