Scaling Up: The Validation of Empirically Derived Scheduling Rules on NVIDIA GPUs

    Get PDF
Embedded systems augmented with graphics processing units (GPUs) are seeing increased use in safety-critical real-time systems such as autonomous vehicles. The current black-box and proprietary nature of these GPUs has made it difficult to determine their behavior in worst-case scenarios, threatening the safety of autonomous systems. In this work, we introduce a new automated validation framework to analyze GPU execution traces and determine if behavioral assumptions inferred from black-box experiments consistently match behavior of real-world devices. We find that the behaviors observed in prior work are consistent on a small scale, but the rules do not stretch to significantly older GPUs and struggle with complex GPU workloads.Bachelor of Scienc

Simultaneous Multithreading Applied to Real Time (Artifact)

    Get PDF
Existing models used in real-time scheduling are inadequate to take advantage of simultaneous multithreading (SMT), which has been shown to improve performance in many areas of computing, but has seen little application to real-time systems. The SMART task model, which allows for combining SMT and real time by accounting for the variable task execution costs caused by SMT, is introduced, along with methods and conditions for scheduling SMT tasks under global earliest-deadline-first scheduling. The benefits of using SMT are demonstrated through a large-scale schedulability study in which we show that task systems with utilizations 30% larger than what would be schedulable without SMT can be correctly scheduled. This artifact includes benchmark experiments used to compare execution times with and without SMT and code to duplicate the reported schedulability experiments

Infant feeding as a transgressive practice in the context of HIV in the UK: A qualitative interview study

    Get PDF
HIV transmission risk via breastfeeding is greatly reduced by antiretroviral therapy but is not zero. Current UK guidelines recommend exclusive formula feeding; however, women can breastfeed if they meet certain criteria. We examine the narrative accounts of mothers with HIV (pregnant or recently given birth) who navigated divergent cultural and national policy norms regarding infant feeding. Mothers with HIV, the majority of whom in the UK are of Black African ethnicity, face a complex decision regarding infant feeding, which has implications for their sense of identity, belonging and citizenship. While the UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates globally, breastfeeding is normalised across African and Asian cultures. However, HIV remains stigmatised and formula feeding could signal one's HIV-positive status. Our participants made difficult trade-offs to mitigate the variety of threats they faced, and both feeding options (breast or formula) felt transgressive, with immense hazards involved for these intersectionally-disadvantaged women

Representations of the homosexuality in francophones literatures : between insults, silence, transvaluation and sexuality. areas of 'Le Flamant noir' of Berthrand Nguyen Matoko, '39 rue de Berne' (Max Lobe), 'Chuchote pas trop' and 'Portrait d'une jeu

By choosing to work on representations of homosexuality in French-speaking sub-Saharan African countries, we pursued three goals at our fingertips. Insurgency against the silence of several African scholars to address the theme of homosexuality in their scientific work, to make it our reflection has therefore imposed itself on us imperatively. Indeed, our first objective (epistemological) was to take an interest in this theme, which still remains an almost unexplored and untapped field of literature in French-speaking Africa, in order to reflect on the issues raised by this highly pregnant sexuality today. In other words, the disinterest or the lack of interest of a large number (of scholars) has undoubtedly drove in us an extra motivation whose result of this work can claim to be the echo. It should be noted that while fiction works abound, this is not the case for scientific work on the subject. The other aim, this time pragmatic, was to refute the idea that homosexuality is an exogenous sexuality to Africa. An idea that makes gay people more uncomfortable and feel apart because of their sexuality. As we have amply demonstrated in the light of Charles Guebogo's work, homosexuality is transcultural and therefore it has always existed among many African peoples. However, its current questioning is not that of past societies. Morals change with time, including men. It is therefore a conviction for us to (re)store self-esteem, trust and consideration to those people who are marginalized because of their sexual orientation. In doing so, we have emphasized acceptance, affirmation and self-representation of one's homosexuality. The last goal is much more personal and it aims at satisfying an intellectual curiosity. Why does this sexuality arouse so much debate these days, divide families or homes in some countries, yet so insignificant in Greek antiquity? Is homosexuality only a sexual act between two or more people of the same sex or does it go beyond genitality? Queries that our many readings and above all our analyzes have allowed to understand otherwise than with a look judge or intolerant attitude towards homosexuals
