Anomalous Hall Effect of Calcium-doped Lanthanum Cobaltite Films
The Hall resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetization of
La_{1-x}Ca_{x}CoO_{3} epitaxial films with x between 0.25 and 0.4 grown on
lanthanum aluminate were measured in fields up to 7 T. The x=1/3 film, shows a
reentrant metal insulator transition. Below 100 K, the x=1/3 and 0.4 films have
significant coercivity which increases with decreasing temperature. At low
temperature the Hall resistivity remains large and essentially field
independent in these films, except for a sign change at the coercive field that
is more abrupt than the switching of the magnetization. A unique
magnetoresistance behavior accompanies this effect. These results are discussed
in terms of a percolation picture and the mixed spin state model for this
system. We propose that the low-temperature Hall effect is caused by
spin-polarized carriers scattering off of orbital disorder in the spin-ordered

Beach and cliff retreat induced by storm groups at Forte Novo,Algarve (Portugal)
Littoral cell dynamics may change through time as a reaction to modifications of the coastal system. Along the Vilamoura-Quarteira coastline, the construction of a groin field limited the sediment supply to the already narrow Forte Novo beach, located downdrift, enhanced wave action on the cliff base and lead to long-term persistent cliff retreat. This research uses a set of surveys from November 2009 to March 2010 to determine short-term soft cliff erosion associated to storm groups at this sediment starved area. Following the initial LiDAR survey, three subsequent surveys were performed using a reflectorless total station for monitoring the cliff face, and RTK-DGPS to monitor the position of the cliff top, the cliff foot and the topography of the adjacent beach. Results indicate an important reduction in beach levels during successive storms (without significant beach recovery in between), allowing waves to further attack the cliff base and contributing to further enhance the structural and permanent cliff retreat. This work demonstrates how a combination of magnitude and frequency of extreme events coupled with development of the coastline, has led to increased cliff-beach recession and to the permanent dislocation of the cliff face
Berry's phase contribution to the anomalous Hall effect of gadolinium
When conduction electrons are forced to follow the local spin texture, the
resulting Berry phase can induce an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). In gadolinium,
as in double-exchange magnets, the exchange interaction is mediated by the
conduction electrons and the AHE may therefore resemble that of chromium
dioxide and other metallic double-exchange ferromagnets. The Hall resistivity,
magnetoresistance, and magnetization of single crystal gadolinium were measured
in fields up to 30 T. Measurements between 2 K and 400 K are consistent with
previously reported data. A scaling analysis for the Hall resistivity as a
function of the magnetization suggests the presence of a Berry's-phase

Evidence for Anisotropic Vortex Dynamics and Pauli Limitation in the Upper Critical Field of FeSe1-xTex
We have determined HC2(T) for FeSe1-xTex (x=0.52) single crystals using
resistivity measurements at high static and pulsed magnetic field, as well as
specific heat measurements up to 9T. We find that the significant anisotropy of
the initial slope of HC2(T) determined from resistivity measurements, is not
present when HC2 is determined from the specific heat results. This suggests
that the thermodynamic upper critical field is almost isotropic, and that
anisotropic vortex dynamics play a role. Further evidence of anisotropic vortex
dynamics is found in the behaviour in pulsed field. We also find that Pauli
limiting must be included in order to fit the temperature dependence of HC2,
indicating probably higher effective mass in FeSe1-xTex than in other Fe
superconductors
The Volume of some Non-spherical Horizons and the AdS/CFT Correspondence
We calculate the volumes of a large class of Einstein manifolds, namely
Sasaki-Einstein manifolds which are the bases of Ricci-flat affine cones
described by polynomial embedding relations in C^n. These volumes are important
because they allow us to extend and test the AdS/CFT correspondence. We use
these volumes to extend the central charge calculation of Gubser (1998) to the
generalized conifolds of Gubser, Shatashvili, and Nekrasov (1999). These
volumes also allow one to quantize precisely the D-brane flux of the AdS
supergravity solution. We end by demonstrating a relationship between the
volumes of these Einstein spaces and the number of holomorphic polynomials
(which correspond to chiral primary operators in the field theory dual) on the

The QuVis Quantum Mechanics Visualization project aims to address challenges
of quantum mechanics instruction through the development of interactive
simulations for the learning and teaching of quantum mechanics. In this
article, we describe evaluation of simulations focusing on two-level systems
developed as part of the Institute of Physics Quantum Physics resources.
Simulations are research-based and have been iteratively refined using student
feedback in individual observation sessions and in-class trials. We give
evidence that these simulations are helping students learn quantum mechanics
concepts at both the introductory and advanced undergraduate level, and that

Tuberculosis prevalence survey in Kashmir valley
A tuberculosis prevalence survey was conducted in about 18,000 persons in
Kashmir valley situated about 1650 m above the mean sea level. All persons
were tested with 3 IU of PPD-S and 10 units of PPD-B. Persons aged 5 yr
and above were X-rayed (70 mm X-ray), and from such persons whose photofluorograms
were interpreted as abnormal two specimens of sputum were
collected and bacteriologically examined. In addition, a large X-ray of the
chest was taken for children aged 0-4 yr who had reactions of 10 mm or more
to PPD-S. They were then clinically examined by a paediatrician, taking into
account all available data, for evaluation for any evidence of tuberculosis.
The results of the survey showed that the prevalence of non-specific sensitivity
(59%) in the Kashmir valley is significant. The prevalence of tuberculous infection
was 38 per cent. The prevalence of culture positive tuberculous patients
(3 per 1000) and that of abacillary X-ray positive patients (14 per 1000) were
found to be similar in the two sexes contrary to the usual experience of a
higher prevalence among males. Results from studies of phage typing, susceptibility
to thiophen-2-carbonic acid hydrazide (TCH) and virulence in the
guineapig of strains obtained from patients diagnosed in the survey showed
that most of these strains belonged to phage type A, were resistant to TCH
and were not of low virulence. Regional variations in the prevalence rates
were seen, the- problem of tuberculosis appeared to he more in the Baramulla
district as compared to Srinagar and Anantnag districts. A comparison of results
obtained from the present survey with those obtained from the BCG trial
in Chingleput (Tamil Nadu) revealed that the tuberculosis situation in the
two areas was quite different
Giant magnetothermopower of magnon-assisted transport in ferromagnetic tunnel junctions
We present a theoretical description of the thermopower due to
magnon-assisted tunneling in a mesoscopic tunnel junction between two
ferromagnetic metals. The thermopower is generated in the course of thermal
equilibration between two baths of magnons, mediated by electrons. For a
junction between two ferromagnets with antiparallel polarizations, the ability
of magnon-assisted tunneling to create thermopower depends on the
difference between the size of the majority and
minority band Fermi surfaces and it is proportional to a temperature dependent
factor where is the magnon Debye
energy. The latter factor reflects the fractional change in the net
magnetization of the reservoirs due to thermal magnons at temperature
(Bloch's law). In contrast, the contribution of magnon-assisted
tunneling to the thermopower of a junction with parallel polarizations is
negligible. As the relative polarizations of ferromagnetic layers can be
manipulated by an external magnetic field, a large difference results in a magnetothermopower effect. This
magnetothermopower effect becomes giant in the extreme case of a junction
