A retrospective study: Cholera in Baghdad 2015

From June to December 2015, Iraq's capital city, Baghdad, suffered a cholera epidemic. Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital (AYTH) is the second main hospital in Baghdad City, located close to the epidemic epicentre and recorded events as they unfolded. A retrospective audit of hospital records was done in this study. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected on the population, including adult patients admitted to AYTH with a confirmed diagnosis of cholera by the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL). The confirmed cases were 940. Of those cases, 21% attended AYTH. Initial belt zone cases totalled 44.16% of hospital cases, of which 65 were dependent on agricultural products from neighbouring farms. All patients were positive for the Inaba Vibrio Cholera strain. Baghdad’s cholera epidemic may have resulted from inhabitants’ dependence on local water sources for agricultural needs. During summer, severed water supplies denied Baghdad’s Dijla River water access forced farmers and locals to source well water. To protect the public and environmental safety, groundwater must be accurately and regularly tested in the region. Safe drinking water and sanitary toilet facilities must be guaranteed

Multiangulation position estimation performance analysis using a Bartlett’s Beamforming Method

In this work, a complete multiangulation system was developed and its performance in term of position estimation (PE) was determined. The developed system uses Bartlett’s beam forming method to estimate AOA of the signal impinging on the 16-element sensor array in a uniform linear array (ULA) geometry at each ground receiving station (GRS). The AOA measurements are then used as input to a linear angulation algorithm for PE. The PE accuracy of the developed system was determined using Monte Carlo simulation and compared with the directional rotating antenna multiangulation system using a square GRS configuration. Simulation results shows that the developed multiangulation PE error is 50% lower than that of the directional rotating antenna system. Furthermore, the PE error of the developed system is higher for emitting sources within the system coverage with position bearings within 610 to 1200 and 2400 to 3000 than other emitting source locations. Keywords: multiangulation system, position estimation, beam forming, Monte Carlo Simulation, position bearin

Treatment solutions to cure Xylella fastidiosa diseased plants

This opinion addresses the question of the efficacy of current treatment solutions to cure Xylella fastidiosa diseased plants, and discusses the experimental treatments under evaluation by two research groups in Apulian olive orchards infected by strain CoDiRO (Complesso del Disseccamento Rapido dell'Olivo). The increasing problems from newly emerging vascular bacterial diseases and the limited success to cure plants from such infections have stimulated numerous studies on treatments with chemical and biological compounds. Under field conditions, various formulations of copper and zinc as spray or root drench are currently used while further options, for example the application of bioactive substances, are at an experimental stage. In Apulia, preliminary results from intensive treatments with such formulations, in combination with the use of good crop management practices, reported more vigorous new growth of diseased trees. However, results provided so far confirmed the continued presence of X. fastidiosa after the treatments under evaluation. This is in agreement with current knowledge that there are no means to cure plants from this bacterial disease, in the sense of eliminating the pathogen from plant tissues. The reported positive response of the treated olive trees is most probably due to the effect of micronutrients and other bioactive compounds that, together with soil cultivation and agronomical practices, improve the vigour of the plants and their resilience to stress caused by bacterial infections. Notwithstanding the preliminary status of these findings, the Panel acknowledged the potentially positive effects of such treatments in prolonging the productive phase of olive trees and their putative relevance for the management of olive orchards, particularly in the containment area where eradication of the pathogen is considered no longer possible. The Panel also concluded that long-term studies are needed to confirm that the reported positive effects on crop performance can be sustained over many years

Suicidal behaviors and constructs are putting at risk the accomplishment of Objective 3 of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development in Spanish-speaking countries. The current study’s principal objective is to explain the presence of suicidal ideation and deaths by suicide as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spanish-speaking countries based on a review of the scientific literature. The PRISMA model was used as the main method while considering the criteria of periodicity, language, typology, and country in order to choose the 28 articles that were analyzed from the following three databases: SCOPUS, Web of Science, and ProQuest Coronavirus Research Database. Suicidal ideation and death by suicide exhibited a growth trend during the COVID-19 pandemic, including post-pandemic, especially in kids, adolescents, and young women of university age belonging to lower socioeconomic strata and presenting risk factors like living in rural areas, poor mental health, unemployment, and family death due to COVID-19
