Towards a multimedia remote viewer for mobile thin clients
Be there a traditional mobile user wanting to connect to a remote multimedia server. In order to allow them to enjoy the same user experience remotely (play, interact, edit, store and share capabilities) as in a traditional fixed LAN environment, several dead-locks are to be dealt with: (1) a heavy and heterogeneous content should be sent through a bandwidth constrained network; (2) the displayed content should be of good quality; (3) user interaction should be processed in real-time and (4) the complexity of the practical solution should not exceed the features of the mobile client in terms of CPU, memory and battery. The present paper takes this challenge and presents a fully operational MPEG-4 BiFS solution
Illicit and Counterfeit Drug Analysis by Morphologically Directed Raman Spectroscopy
Morphologically directed Raman spectroscopy (MDRS) is a novel tool for the forensic analysis of illicit and counterfeit drug samples. MDRS combines Raman microspectroscopy with automated particle imaging so that physical and chemical information about the components of a mixture sample can be obtained. Results of automated particle imaging are used to determine samples for Raman analysis. The use of MDRS for these types of samples can be employed for both forensic investigations and adjudications of cases. The method provides insight about the physical and chemical composition of the sample, as well as about manufacturing and sample history. Here, MDRS was used in four different illicit and counterfeit drug analyses: (1) examination of a multicomponent drug mixture where the results could be used for comparative source attribution, (2) the detection of low (or trace) concentration particles in a drug sample, (3) the analysis of synthetic cathinone samples (i.e., bath salts), and (4) a study of counterfeit pharmaceutical products
Video Stream Transmodality
10 pagesInternational audienceTransmodality is the partitioning of an image into regions that are expected to present a better entropy using different coding schemes, depending on their structural density, at constant bandwidth. In this paper we present the transmodality of video stream. Our contribution is a transmoder module that includes various different optimized video codecs and implements the concept of transmodality on a set of video streams. We evaluate our proposal with different kinds of video (in content term), and our algorithm shows comprehensive results by saving up to 8% of bandwidth for the same PSNR in comparison with the state-of-the-art video encoding baselines
Organic rankine cycle as efficient alternative to steam cycle for small scale power generation
Paper presented at the 8th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Mauritius, 11-13 July, 2011.To generate electricity from biomass combustion heat,
geothermal wells, recovered waste heat from internal
combustion engines, gas turbines or industrial processes, both
the steam cycle and the organic Rankine cycle are widely in
use. Both technologies are well established and can be found
on comparable industrial applications. This paper presents a
thermodynamic analysis and a comparative study of the cycle
efficiency for a simplified steam cycle versus an ORC cycle.
The most commonly used organic fluids have been considered :
R245fa, Toluene, (cyclo)-pentane, Solkatherm and 2 siliconeoils
(MM and MDM). Working fluid selection and its
application area is being discussed based on fluid properties.
The thermal efficiency is mainly determined by the temperature
level of the heat source and the condenser conditions. The
influence of several process parameters such as turbine inlet
and condenser temperature, turbine isentropic efficiency,
vapour quality and pressure, use of a regenerator (ORC), is
derived from numerous computer simulations. The temperature
profile of the heat source is the main restricting factor for the
evaporation temperature and pressure. Finally, some general
and economic considerations related to the choice between a
steam cycle and ORC are discussed.mp201
