    Photodegradation Mechanisms of Tetraphenyl Butadiene Coatings for Liquid Argon Detectors

    We report on studies of degradation mechanisms of tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) coatings of the type used in neutrino and dark matter liquid argon experiments. Using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry we have detected the ultraviolet-blocking impurity benzophenone (BP). We monitored the drop in performance and increase of benzophenone concentration in TPB plates with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, and demonstrate the correlation between these two variables. Based on the presence and initially exponential increase in the concentration of benzophenone observed, we propose that TPB degradation is a free radical-mediated photooxidation reaction, which is subsequently confirmed by displaying delayed degradation using a free radical inhibitor. Finally we show that the performance of wavelength-shifting coatings of the type envisioned for the LBNE experiment can be improved by 10-20%, with significantly delayed UV degradation, by using a 20% admixture of 4-tert-Butylcatechol.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures.     Statistical Analysis of Genealogical Trees for Polygamic Species

    Repetitions within a given genealogical tree provides some information about the degree of consanguineity of a population. They can be analyzed with techniques usually employed in statistical physics when dealing with fixed point transformations. In particular we show that the tree features strongly depend on the fractions of males and females in the population, and also on the offspring probability distribution.     A Novel Use of Light Guides and Wavelength Shifting Plates for the Detection of Scintillation Photons in Large Liquid Argon Detectors

    Scintillation light generated as charged particles traverse large liquid argon detectors adds valuable information to studies of weakly-interacting particles. This paper uses both laboratory measurements and cosmic ray data from the Blanche dewar facility at Fermilab to characterize the efficiency of the photon detector technology developed at Indiana University for the single phase far detector of DUNE. The efficiency of this technology was found to be 0.48% at the readout end when the detector components were characterized with laboratory measurements. A second determination of the efficiency using cosmic ray tracks is in reasonable agreement with the laboratory determination. The agreement of these two efficiency determinations supports the result that minimum ionizing muons generate Nphot=40,000{\mathcal N}_{phot} = 40,000 photons/MeV as they cross the LAr volume.Comment: Accepted version (without final editorial corrections

    Genética bioquímica del calamar argentino, Illex Argentinus

    Previously reported results on natural populations of the Argentinean squid, Illex argentinus, urged further studies using electrophoretically detectable loci. The muscles of 202 adult squids caught in the Argentinean Sea were examined. Electrophoretic and staining methods for the 46 enzymes studied are given in detail. Forty-seven loci were detected (20 polymorphic), 45 of which are considered useable in population genetics screening. The expression of the loci coding for these enzymes is described and interpreted, and the presented results will serve as a basis for a more detailed examination of genetic variation in Argentinean squid populations.Estudios biológicos previos realizados en el calamar argentino, Illex argentinus, han sugerido la conveniencia de profundizar en el conocimiento de la estructura poblacional de la especie, utilizando el análisis genético de proteínas detectables electroforéticamente. Con esta finalidad se analizó el músculo esquelético de un total de 202 individuos capturados en el Mar Argentino. Se utilizó la técnica de electroforesis horizontal en gel de almidón al 11%. Se estudiaron 46 sistemas enzimáticos distintos. La expresión de los loci para estos enzimas son descritos e interpretados en detalle. Un total de 47 loci fueron detectados (20 polimórficos), de los cuales 45 se consideran utilizables para el análisis de la estructura poblacional de la especie

    Cycle by cycle NOx model for diesel engine control

    [EN] This paper presents a model for on-line NOx estimation. The method uses both, low frequency components and high frequency components of in-cylinder pressure signal: it harnesses in-cylinder pressure resonance to estimate the trapped mass, and based on this measurement, a NOx model is adapted to estimate NOx emissions cycle by cycle. In addition of the in-cylinder pressure signal, the procedure only requires from lambda and air mass flow to estimate NOx, so it can give a direct estimation of NOx or improve transient response and aging of current NOx sensors. The method was validated on a CI engine with high pressure EGR loop under steady and transient conditions showing errors below 10% and cycle by cycle time response. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.     A multi-objective energy management optimization for a hybrid electric bus covering an urban route

    [EN] The development of electrified vehicles is a promising step toward energy savings, emissions reduction, environmental protection, and more sustainable economic growth. In the case of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), the energy management strategy (EMS) is essential for their efficiency and energy consumption. Typically, EMS employs rule-based strategies calibrated to general driving conditions. So, this paper proposes to calibrate the EMS of an urban hybrid electric bus that covers a particular route by taking advantage of past driving information. The EMS computes the percentage of the vehicle power demand that must be supplied by each of the sources (fuel and battery) and also controls the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system to achieve cabin thermal comfort. The proposed approach is based on employing an optimal solution by dynamic programing in a previous loop covered by the bus in the considered route. Then, the cost-to-go matrix is stored and used in the following trips by applying the one-step look-ahead rollout, taking profit from the similarities of the loops in the route. To compare and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a benchmark was carried out by employing the widespread equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) approach, combined with rule-based strategies in the HVAC control system.     Energy Management of Hybrid Electric Urban Bus by Off-Line Dynamic Programming Optimization and One-Step Look-Ahead Rollout

    [EN] Due to the growing air quality concern in urban areas and rising fuel prices, urban bus fleets are progressively turning to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) which show higher efficiency and lower emissions in comparison with conventional vehicles. HEVs can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by combining different energy sources (i.e., fuel and batteries). In this sense, the performance of HEVs is strongly dependent on the energy management strategy (EMS) which coordinates the energy sources available to exploit their potential. While most EMSs are calibrated for general driving conditions, this paper proposes to adapt the EMS to the specific driving conditions on a particular bus route. The proposed algorithm relies on the fact that partial information on the driving cycle can be assumed since, in the case of a urban bus, the considered route is periodically covered. According to this hypothesis, the strategy presented in this paper is based on estimating the driving cycle from a previous trip of the bus in the considered route. This initial driving cycle is used to compute the theoretical optimal solution by dynamic programming. The obtained control policy (particularly the cost-to-go matrix) is stored and used in the subsequent driving cycles by applying one-step look-ahead roll out, then, adapting the EMS to the actual driving conditions but exploiting the similarities with previous cycles in the same route. To justify the proposed strategy, the paper discusses the common patterns in different driving cycles of the same bus route, pointing out several metrics that show how a single cycle captures most of the key parameters for EMS optimization. Then, the proposed algorithm (off-line dynamic programming optimization and one-step look-ahead rollout) is described. Results obtained by simulation show that the proposed method is able to keep the battery charge within the required range and achieve near-optimal performance, with only a 1.9% increase in fuel consumption with regards to the theoretical optimum.     Alternative strategies to inhibit tumor vascularization

    Endothelial cells present in tumors show different origin, phenotype, and genotype with respect to the normal counterpart. Various mechanisms of intra-tumor vasculogenesis sustain the complexity of tumor vasculature, which can be further modified by signals deriving from the tumor microenvironment. As a result, resistance to anti-VEGF therapy and activation of compensatory pathways remain a challenge in the treatment of cancer patients, revealing the need to explore alternative strategies to the classical anti-angiogenic drugs. In this review, we will describe some alternative strategies to inhibit tumor vascularization, including targeting of antigens and signaling pathways overexpressed by tumor endothelial cells, the development of endothelial vaccinations, and the use of extracellular vesicles. In addition, anti-angiogenic drugs with normalizing effects on tumor vessels will be discussed. Finally, we will present the concept of endothelial demesenchymalization as an alternative approach to restore normal endothelial cell phenotype

    Modelling driving behaviour and its impact on the energy management problem in hybrid electric vehicles

    Perfect knowledge of future driving conditions can be rarely assumed on real applications when optimally splitting power demands among different energy sources in a hybrid electric vehicle. Since performance of a control strategy in terms of fuel economy and pollutant emissions is strongly affected by vehicle power requirements, accurate predictions of future driving conditions are needed. This paper proposes different methods to model driving patterns with a stochastic approach. All the addressed methods are based on the statistical analysis of previous driving patterns to predict future driving conditions, some of them employing standard vehicle sensors, while others require non-conventional sensors (for instance, global positioning system or inertial reference system).
