Some comments on signal interpolation
Interpolation of a discrete time random signal is equivaient to the mean square linear estimation of this signal at a
given time instant in terms of ail its past and its future . Instead of using complex techniques developed for more
general problems, a very simple method is presented . The structure of the interpolation flter is analyzed and interpolation is compared to prediction .

Widely linear approximation and circularity of deterministic signals
Widely linear systems have been introduced in the context of statistical estimation of complex random signals. In this
framework the concept of circularity appears naturally and plays an important role in many problems of signal
processing. The purpose of this paper is to show that methods well known in estimation problems can be transposed
for the approximation of deterministic signals. In particular it is shown that in many cases there is an advantage to use
widely linear systems instead of classical strictly linear systems. For this analysis the concept of circularity is of great
importance and it is introduced for non-random signals. This yields for example a new approach of Fourier expansions.
Fourier
Geometry of polyspectra
Polyspectra of signals are related to Fourier transforms of moments or cumulants called spectral moment functions . These function s
have remarkable geometrical properties involving some specific surfaces in the frequency domain . Thus stationary manifol d
charaterizes the stationarity of a signal . The same appears for normal manifolds and normal densities related with normal signals .
In this paper are analyzed the connections between these manifolds and some properties of signals such as circularity, spherically
invariance, time reversibility or ergodicity. Furthermore relationships between these properties and the class of ordered signal s
Whiteness and its transformations
The recent use of higher order statistics in signal processing allows us to
extend the concept of' whiteness so far limited to the second order . This
extension leads to define new kinds of white noises whose relationships are
investigated. So, we might ask whether it is possible, using linear or non
linear operations, to whiten a random process to an order higher than the
second or at least to preserve its whiteness . Particularly we show that it is impossible to whiten with a linfeilatre,r, to an order higher thon the second
and that the preservation of whiteness dépends on the gaussian property.L'usage récent des statistiques d'ordre supérieur en traitement du signal
Real and complex transversal Volterra filtering in signal processing
A tutorial review of the use of discrete time transversal Volterra filters
(TVF) in detection, estimation and narrow-band array processing is
presented, when the data are either real or complex valued . A unique
representation of such filters allows to tope simultaneously with a wide
field of problems ranging from maximizing the contrant in Hilbert spaces
spanned by the outputs of TVF, to the non linear least squared estimation
of an unknown stochastic parameter . The general extended normal
equations, giving the optimal TVF for all the above problems, are at first derived in a unique form and afterwards applied to each issue of concern .
A learning approach to the detection of gravitational wave transients
We investigate the class of quadratic detectors (i.e., the statistic is a
bilinear function of the data) for the detection of poorly modeled
gravitational transients of short duration. We point out that all such
detection methods are equivalent to passing the signal through a filter bank
and linearly combine the output energy. Existing methods for the choice of the
filter bank and of the weight parameters rely essentially on the two following
ideas: (i) the use of the likelihood function based on a (possibly
non-informative) statistical model of the signal and the noise, (ii) the use of
Monte-Carlo simulations for the tuning of parametric filters to get the best
detection probability keeping fixed the false alarm rate. We propose a third
approach according to which the filter bank is "learned" from a set of training
data. By-products of this viewpoint are that, contrarily to previous methods,
(i) there is no requirement of an explicit description of the probability
density function of the data when the signal is present and (ii) the filters we
use are non-parametric. The learning procedure may be described as a two step
process: first, estimate the mean and covariance of the signal with the
training data; second, find the filters which maximize a contrast criterion
referred to as deflection between the "noise only" and "signal+noise"
hypothesis. The deflection is homogeneous to the signal-to-noise ratio and it
uses the quantities estimated at the first step. We apply this original method
to the problem of the detection of supernovae core collapses. We use the
catalog of waveforms provided recently by Dimmelmeier et al. to train our
algorithm. We expect such detector to have better performances on this
particular problem provided that the reference signals are reliable.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
