Multiplexed Readout of Transmon Qubits with Josephson Bifurcation Amplifiers
Achieving individual qubit readout is a major challenge in the development of
scalable superconducting quantum processors. We have implemented the
multiplexed readout of a four transmon qubit circuit using non-linear
resonators operated as Josephson bifurcation amplifiers. We demonstrate the
simultaneous measurement of Rabi oscillations of the four transmons. We find
that multiplexed Josephson bifurcation is a high-fidelity readout method, the
scalability of which is not limited by the need of a large bandwidth nearly
quantum-limited amplifier as is the case with linear readout resonators.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, and 31 reference

Status of the CTF3 commissioning
The Preliminary Phase of the new CLIC Test Facility CTF3 consists of a low-charge demonstration of the electron bunch train combination process on which the CLIC drive beam generation scheme is based. The principle of the combination relies on the injection of short electron bunches into an isochronous ring using RF deflecting cavities. The commissioning of this facility started in September 2001, with alternating periods of installation work and beam studies. In this paper, we present the status of the facility, the first beam measurements and the next steps towards the completion of the experiment
Pauli problem for a spin of arbitrary length: A simple method to determine its wave function
The problem of determining a pure state vector from measurements is investigated for a quantum spin of arbitrary length. Generically, only a finite number of wave functions is compatible with the intensities of the spin components in two different spatial directions, measured by a Stern-Gerlach apparatus. The remaining ambiguity can be resolved by one additional well-defined measurement. This method combines efficiency with simplicity: only a small number of quantities have to be measured and the experimental setup is elementary. Other approaches to determine state vectors from measurements, also known as the ‘‘Pauli problem,’’ are reviewed for both spin and particle systems
Myelofibrosis-Associated Lymphoproliferative Disease: Retrospective Study of 16 Cases and Literature Review
Background. To better describe the clinical, biological, and the outcome of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with, at the initial presentation, bone marrow fibrosis (MF).
Patients and Methods. From January 2001 to January 2007, 16 eligible patients with NHL and MF were retrieved from the Pathology Department of the University hospital of Amiens. Median age of patients was 62 years (range 16–74) with a sex ratio male/female of 3. Results. MF is associated with all types of lymphoma predominantly with B-cell phenotype and it seems to be more associated with low-grade NHL. B-symptoms are more frequent at diagnosis and more patients presented with an elevated LDH level. JAK-2 was negative in the 10 patients analysed. Two patients presented with features of primary MF with no evidence of lymphoma. Overall response rate was 94% after the first line of therapy with regression or improvement of MF. Relapse occurred in 8 patients (47%) with recurrence of MF in all of them. After a median follow-up of 42 months, 12 patients were alive with an overall survival rate for the entire group of 75%.
Conclusions. MF-associated NHL is a rare manifestation which may be associated with all types of NHL and its presence does not seem to confer a poor prognosis. A search for lymphoproliferation should be considered when the cause of MF is not apparent
Herschel/PACS observations of the 69 band of crystalline olivine around evolved stars
We present 48 Herschel/PACS spectra of evolved stars in the wavelength range
of 67-72 m. This wavelength range covers the 69 m band of crystalline
olivine (). The width and
wavelength position of this band are sensitive to the temperature and
composition of the crystalline olivine. Our sample covers a wide range of
objects: from high mass-loss rate AGB stars (OH/IR stars,
M/yr), through post-AGB stars with and without circumbinary disks, to
planetary nebulae and even a few massive evolved stars. The goal of this study
is to exploit the spectral properties of the 69 m band to determine the
composition and temperature of the crystalline olivine. Since the objects cover
a range of evolutionary phases, we study the physical and chemical properties
in this range of physical environments. We fit the 69 m band and use its
width and position to probe the composition and temperature of the crystalline
olivine. For 27 sources in the sample, we detected the 69 m band of
crystalline olivine (). The
69 m band shows that all the sources produce pure forsterite grains
containing no iron in their lattice structure. The temperature of the
crystalline olivine as indicated by the 69 m band, shows that on average
the temperature of the crystalline olivine is highest in the group of OH/IR
stars and the post-AGB stars with confirmed Keplerian disks. The temperature is
lower for the other post-AGB stars and lowest for the planetary nebulae. A
couple of the detected 69 m bands are broader than those of pure
magnesium-rich crystalline olivine, which we show can be due to a temperature
gradient in the circumstellar environment of these stars. continued...Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Sequential sampling for panicle caterpillars (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in sorghum

The sorghum panicle caterpillar complex consists of larvae of two polyphagous lepidopteran species: the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), and fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Sampling for panicle caterpillars in sorghum fields is usually accomplished by the beat bucket sampling technique with a fixed sample size of 30 beat bucket samples of one sorghum panicle each per 16.2 ha of field. We used Wald's sequential probability ratio test for a negative binomial distribution to develop a sequential sampling plan for panicle caterpillars. In total, 115 sorghum fields were sampled in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas from June to August 2010. Panicle caterpillars had an aggregated distribution of counts confirmed by Pearson's chi-square statistic for lack of fit to the negative binomial distribution for each sampled field. A sequential sampling plan was developed using a high threshold (an economic threshold) of 0.5 caterpillars per sorghum panicle, a low threshold (a safe level) of 0.20 caterpillars per panicle, and fixed error rates (α = 0.10 and β = 0.05). At caterpillar densities >0.45 and <0.12 per panicle, the average number of panicles inspected to make a decision was less than the current recommendation of 30. In a 2013 validation test of 25 fields, the expected number of samples taken from average sample number curve was in close agreement with the number of samples required using the sequential plan (r 2 = 0.93), and all fields were correctly classified when compared with a fixed sample size result. The plan improved upon current sampling recommendations for panicle caterpillars in sorghum because at known acceptable fixed error rates fewer samples were required when caterpillars are scarce or abundant, whereas more samples were required to make decisions with the same acceptable error rates when densities were near the economic thresholds
