    In the shoes of a farmer: (re)connecting the public with animal health and welfare in livestock production

    The UK public is becoming increasingly disconnected from farming, yet shows an interest in how food is produced and how farm animals are raised. This article reflects upon a novel engagement activity aimed at facilitating conversations about farm animal health and welfare in the UK. We focus upon how: (1) the interactive design encouraged participation, and made the activity enjoyable; (2) the content and presentation facilitated non-judgemental conversations; (3) the activity was an opportunity to discuss an important topic; (4) the location and timing allowed the researchers to reach different publics; and (5) the activity enhanced the subsequent research and engagement programme. We conclude by highlighting the value of creative engagement methods for engaging members of the public with food and farming issues

    The Barbados (Alias Folkestone) Marine Reserve, Barbados: A Late Bloomer?

    The Barbados Marine Reserve (BMR) is a 2.2 km2 no-take marine reserve occupying one of the most intensely used and impacted sections of the coast and comprises four zones: Scientific, Northern Watersports, Recreational, Southern Watersports. Establishment of the BMR in 1981 did little to change the de facto marine resource governance regime for the area. There was minimal consultation of stakeholders in determining the zoning and regulations. Fishers were negatively impacted, and no user group derived significant benefits from the reserve. A mandate to maximise revenues led the National Conservation Commission (NCC), responsible for BMR management, to virtually abandon the reserve. Efforts to spur institutional change were not effective, because of the centralized authority of the NCC and the belief that the BMR could not generate revenue. In 1998, the Government initiated a study to reform marine resource governance within the BMR and adjacent areas. Stakeholder consultation revealed complex patterns of use in the area. Recommendations, adopted by the Government in March, 2001 included establishing a broader Marine Protected Area (MPA) along an expanded coastline (from 2.6 km to 9.5 km) with seven types of management zones, and renaming the area as the Folkestone Marine Managed Area.     Detailing the phonetic environment: a sociophonetic study of the London-Bengali community

    The present study investigated variability in the production of English by London Bengali adults who speak the Sylheti dialect of Bengali. Speakers had been resident in London for differing lengths of time. They were recorded producing /l/, /r/ and the eleven monophthongal vowels in English. Phonetically trained listeners rated speakers' productions of /l/ and /r/ in terms of manner and place. F1 and F2 formant frequency values, and duration were measured for all monophthongal vowels. The results demonstrated that older speakers (first-generation immigrants) tended to use Sylhetilike variants when speaking English, whilst second-generation speakers tended to use native English-like variants. These findings will be used to inform studies of the role of phonetic input in child language acquisition from the London Bengali community

    Telesat-G/Delta post launch report

    The Canadiari Telesat-G (ANIK-D1) commercial communications satellite was launched successfully from the Eastern space and Missile Center (ESMC) at 7:10 p.m., EDT, on August 25, 1982, by a Delta 3920 Vehicle, Mission Number 164. Performance of the two stage Delta launch vehicle was nominal and placed the payload in a low circular orbit as planned. The Payload Assist Module (PAM-D), which is part of the payload, also performed nominally. The synchronous transfer orbital elements achieved by Delta/PAM, compared with the nominal expected, are provided. The satellite performed satisfactorily during the transfer orbit, and the ABM was fired successfully at 5:29 p.m., EDT, on August 29, 1982. The satellite was maneuvered to a position 104 degrees West Longitude above the equator. Satellite status is satisfactory and it has entered service

    We report a case of a Clostridium septicum empyema in an immunocompetent woman following operation for an incarcerated internal hernia. The patient was successfully treated with pleural decortication and an extended course of postoperative antibiotics. This is the first report of such an infection in the medical literature

    Dairy bioactives and functional ingredients with skin health benefits

    The potential of whey from Italian cheese productions to support skin health and anti-ageing mechanism was studied. The effect of whey on dermal and epidermal cells was evaluated. Whey inhibited the activity of elastase and tyrosinase enzymes by 60% and 32%, respectively. Whey cytotoxicity against tested skin cell lines, human fibroblasts (HDFa) and keratinocytes (HaCaT) was not observed. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the samples was noted, after treatment with whey intracellular ROS level was decreased by 87% in comparison with the hydrogen peroxide-treated cells. Fibroblasts produced a significant amount of extracellular matrix molecules, collagen I, elastin and glycosaminoglycans as a result of treatment with tested whey. In addition, the ability of samples to improve the cell barrier integrity of keratinocytes was proven. The obtained results indicate that pure whey supports skin health and shows potential to be used by the cosmetic industry

    Clinicians' views of using cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) in the permanent childhood hearing impairment patient pathway

    Objective: To obtain clinicians' views on the use of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) in the clinical pathway. Design: A questionnaire aimed at clinicians who use the HEARLab system with the Aided Cortical Assessment (ACA) Module. Results compared for Australians (where HEARLab produced) to other countries. Sample: The questionnaire was completed by 49 clinicians; 33 from Australia and 13 clinicians outside of Australia and 3 clinicians, destination unknown. Results: The findings of this research demonstrated that clinicians using CAEPs found them valuable for clinical practice. CAEPs were used to verify or modify hearing aid fittings and were used for counselling parents to reinforce the need for hearing aids. With the use of speech token as the stimulus clinicians had more relevant information to increase confidence in decision-making on paediatric hearing management. Conclusions: The main benefit from the use of CAEPs (using speech token stimuli) was for infant hearing aid fitting programmes, to facilitate earlier decisions relating to hearing aid fitting, for fine-tuning the aids and as an additional measure for cochlear implant referrals

    Online molecular characterisation of organic aerosols in an atmospheric chamber using extractive electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry

    Abstract. The oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represents a substantial source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere. In this study, we present online measurements of the molecular constituents formed in the gas and aerosol phases during α-pinene oxidation in the Cambridge Atmospheric Simulation Chamber (CASC). We focus on characterising the performance of extractive electrospray ionisation (EESI) mass spectrometry (MS) for particle analysis. A number of new aspects of EESI-MS performance are considered here. We show that relative quantification of organic analytes can be achieved in mixed organic–inorganic particles. A comprehensive assignment of mass spectra for α-pinene derived SOA in both positive and negative ion modes is obtained using an ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometer. We compare these online spectra to conventional offline ESI-MS spectra and find good agreement in terms of the compounds identified, without the need for complex sample work-up procedures. Under our experimental conditions, EESI-MS signals arise only from particle-phase analytes. High-time-resolution (7 min) EESI-MS spectra are compared with simulations from the near-explicit Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) for a range of reaction conditions. We show that MS peak abundances scale with modelled concentrations for condensable products (pinonic acid, pinic acid, OH-pinonic acid). Relative quantification is achieved throughout SOA formation as the composition, size and mass (5–2400 ”g m−3) of particles is evolving. This work provides a robust demonstration of the advantages of EESI-MS for chamber studies over offline ESI-MS (time resolution, relative quantification) and over hard online techniques (molecular information). </jats:p
