A bright, pulsed two-mode squeezer
We report the realization of a bright ultrafast two-mode squeezer based on
type II parametric downconversion (PDC) in periodically poled
(PP-KTP) waveguides. It produces a pulsed two-mode squeezed
vacuum state: a photon-number entangled pair of truly single-mode pulses or, in
terms of continuous variables quantum optics, a pulsed, single mode
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state in the telecom regime. We prove the single
mode character of our source by measuring its correlation function
and demonstrate a mean photon number of up to 2.5 per pulse, equivalent to 11dB
of two-mode squeezing.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Anomalous Chiral Symmetry Breaking above the QCD Phase Transition
We study the anomalous breaking of U_A(1) symmetry just above the QCD phase
transition for zero and two flavors of quarks, using a staggered fermion,
lattice discretization. The properties of the QCD phase transition are expected
to depend on the degree of U_A(1) symmetry breaking in the transition region.
For the physical case of two flavors, we carry out extensive simulations on a
16^3 x 4 lattice, measuring a difference in susceptibilities which is sensitive
to U_A(1) symmetry and which avoids many of the staggered fermion
discretization difficulties. The results suggest that anomalous effects are at
or below the 15% level.Comment: 10 pages including 2 figures and 1 tabl
Demonstrating the feasibility of standardized application program interfaces that will allow mobile/portable terminals to receive services combining UMTS and DVB-T
Crucial to the commercial exploitation of any service combining UMTS and DVB-T is the availability of standardized API’s adapted to the hybrid UMTS and DVB-T network and to the technical limitations of mobile/portable terminals. This paper describes work carried out in the European Commission Framework Program 5 (FP5) project CONFLUENT to demonstrate the feasibility of such Application Program Interfaces (API’s) by enabling the reception of a Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) based application transmitted over DVB-T on five different terminals with parts of the service running on a mobile phone
Changing the ideological roots of prejudice: Longitudinal effects of ethnic intergroup contact on social dominance orientation
Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) has been reported to be strongly related to a multitude of intergroup phenomena, but little is known about situational experiences that may influence SDO. Drawing from research on intergroup contact theory, we argue that positive intergroup contact is able to reduce SDO-levels. The results of an intergroup contact intervention study among high school students (Study 1, N=71) demonstrated that SDO-levels were indeed attenuated after the intervention. Furthermore, this intervention effect on SDO was especially pronounced among students reporting a higher quality of contact. A cross-lagged longitudinal survey among adults (Study 2, N=363) extended these findings by demonstrating that positive intergroup contact is able to decrease SDO over time. Moreover, we did not obtain evidence for the idea that people high in SDO would engage less in intergroup contact. These findings indicate that intergroup contact erodes one of the important socio-ideological bases of generalized prejudice and discrimination
Managing bereavement in the classroom: a conspiracy of silence?
The ways in which teachers in British schools manage bereaved children are under-reported. This article reports the impact of students' bereavement and their subsequent management in primary and secondary school classrooms in Southeast London. Thirteen school staff working in inner-city schools took part in in-depth interviews that focused on the impact of bereaved children on the school and how teachers responded to these children. All respondents had previously had contact with a local child bereavement service that aims to provide support, advice, and consultancy to children, their parents, and teachers. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using ATLAS-ti. Three main themes were identified from analysis of interview data. Firstly, British society, culture, local communities, and the family were significant influences in these teachers' involvement with bereaved students. Secondly, school staff managed bereaved students through contact with other adults and using practical classroom measures such as "time out" cards and contact books. Lastly, teachers felt they had to be strong, even when they were distressed. Surprise was expressed at the mature reaction of secondary school students to deaths of others. The article recommends that future research needs to concentrate on finding the most effective way of supporting routinely bereaved children, their families, and teachers
A novel strong coupling expansion of the QCD Hamiltonian
Introducing an infinite spatial lattice with box length a, a systematic
expansion of the physical QCD Hamiltonian in \lambda = g^{-2/3} can be
obtained. The free part is the sum of the Hamiltonians of the quantum mechanics
of spatially constant fields for each box, and the interaction terms
proportional to \lambda^n contain n discretised spatial derivatives connecting
different boxes. As an example, the energy of the vacuum and the lowest scalar
glueball is calculated up to order \lambda^2 for the case of SU(2) Yang-Mills
theory.Comment: Talk given at the 6th International Workshop on "Critical Point and
