Diverse characteristics of UK organic direct marketing chains
In the past few years, organic direct sales in the UK have grown rapidly. Direct sales are assumed to have short or distinct marketing chains from farm gate to consumer. This paper begins by outlining some current problems with the widely accepted defi nition of organic direct sales and charts some of their diverse characteristics. It goes on to argue that the mix of organic direct and multi-farm direct sales is so diverse that a greater clarification of terms is necessary in order to progress consumer, policy and research understanding
Semiconductor resonator solitons above band gap
We show experimentally the existence of bright and dark spatial solitons in
semiconductor resonators for excitation above the band gap energy. These
solitons can be switched on, both spontaneously and with address pulses,
without the thermal delay found for solitons below the band gap which is
unfavorable for applications. The differences between soliton properties above

From one- to two-dimensional solitons in the Ginzburg-Landau model of lasers with frequency selective feedback
We use the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a dissipative
linear equation as a model of lasers with an external frequency-selective
feedback. It is known that the feedback can stabilize the one-dimensional (1D)
self-localized mode. We aim to extend the analysis to 2D stripe-shaped and
vortex solitons. The radius of the vortices increases linearly with their
topological charge, , therefore the flat-stripe soliton may be interpreted
as the vortex with , while vortex solitons can be realized as stripes
bent into rings. The results for the vortex solitons are applicable to a broad
class of physical systems. There is a qualitative agreement between our results
and those recently reported for models with saturable nonlinearity.Comment: Submitted to PR
Effects of a localized beam on the dynamics of excitable cavity solitons
We study the dynamical behavior of dissipative solitons in an optical cavity
filled with a Kerr medium when a localized beam is applied on top of the
homogeneous pumping. In particular, we report on the excitability regime that
cavity solitons exhibits which is emergent property since the system is not
locally excitable. The resulting scenario differs in an important way from the
case of a purely homogeneous pump and now two different excitable regimes, both
Class I, are shown. The whole scenario is presented and discussed, showing that
it is organized by three codimension-2 points. Moreover, the localized beam can
be used to control important features, such as the excitable threshold,
improving the possibilities for the experimental observation of this

Social learning mechanisms shape transmission pathways through replicate local social networks of wild birds
The emergence and spread of novel behaviours via social learning can lead to rapid population-level changes whereby the social connections between individuals shape information flow. However, behaviours can spread via different mechanisms and little is known about how information flow depends on the underlying learning rule individuals employ. Here, comparing four different learning mechanisms, we simulated behavioural spread on replicate empirical social networks of wild great tits and explored the relationship between individual sociality and the order of behavioural acquisition. Our results reveal that, for learning rules dependent on the sum and strength of social connections to informed individuals, social connectivity was related to the order of acquisition, with individuals with increased social connectivity and reduced social clustering adopting new behaviours faster. However, when behavioural adoption depends on the ratio of an individuals’ social connections to informed versus uninformed individuals, social connectivity was not related to the order of acquisition. Finally, we show how specific learning mechanisms may limit behavioural spread within networks. These findings have important implications for understanding whether and how behaviours are likely to spread across social systems, the relationship between individuals’ sociality and behavioural acquisition, and therefore for the costs and benefits of sociality
