Measuring the Impact of Microfinance on Child Health Outcomes in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Microfinance has become a staple of modern development policy as a means to facilitate anything from gender equality to growth. It can facilitate the sharing of health-related information among parents, promote the bargaining power of women in the household, aid in the development of important health-related infrastructure, and help households smooth consumption in the wake of unexpected economic shocks. Using data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (1993-2000), we find that the presence of microfinance institutions in communities significantly improves the health of children.Microfinance, child health, nutrition, Indonesia

Affective incoherence: when affective concepts and embodied reactions clash.

    Get PDF
In five studies, the authors examined the effects on cognitive performance of coherence and incoherence between conceptual and experiential sources of affective information. The studies crossed the priming of happy and sad concepts with affective experiences. In different experiments, these included approach or avoidance actions, happy or sad feelings, and happy or sad expressive behaviors. In all studies, coherence between affective concepts and affective experiences led to better recall of a story than did affective incoherence. The authors suggest that the experience of such experiential affective cues serves as evidence of the appropriateness of affective concepts that come to mind. The results suggest that affective coherence has epistemic benefits and that incoherence is costly in terms of cognitive performance

Polymorphisms in the bradykinin B2 receptor gene and childhood asthma

    Get PDF
Bradykinin has been suggested as one of the key mediators of bronchial asthma. Polymorphisms with a potential functional relevance have been described in the B2 bradykinin receptor gene. Study of these polymorphisms in 77 children with asthma and 73 controls revealed no association. However, when comparing the asthmatics according to their age at onset (before and after age 4), the exon 1 allele BE1-2G was significantly associated with late-onset asthma (p <0.05). Since BE1-2G has previously been shown to lead to a higher transcription rate of the B2 receptor, this result warrants further investigation of the role of bradykinin in conferring susceptibility to pediatric asthma

Márai Sándor publicisztikája 1919 és 1928 között = Sándor Márai's publicism between 1919 and 1928

A munkánk többi része a magyar nyelvű magyarországi és a határokon túli magyar lapokban megjelent írásainak összegyüjtésével, rekonstruálásával, a bibliográfiai adatok rögzítésével telt. | According to the original title we would have liked to deal with Sándor Márai's publicism between 1919-1928 but the dates had to be modified in the original contract (Sándor Márai's publicism between 1916-1925). In the end we revised those newspapers between 1916-1927 in which we hoped to find Márai's articles in the last three years. The most difficult part of our work was to collect, to reconstruct and to prepare for publishig the articles which were originaly published in Germany and in Austria in different german and hungarian newspapers. These Márai-articles were collected and publicated in the volume ''Kitépett noteszlapok''. Over this we publicated a study volume in which I deal with the Márai's publicism and his motive world. The most important result that these unknown Marai's articles can be read by the researcher and also by the non-professional readers. Summing up what has been written: We published 3 volumes which contain Márai's articles and the 4th volume is being published. Beyond that we made ready a studybook which is also being publised. (Originally this last one was not the part of our project) Our work - I hope - helps the reader and researchers to read and study a more complete Marai's life-work

Understanding Student Self-Disclosure Typology through Blogging

    Get PDF
Significant research indicates that student self-disclosure plays an important role in the learning experience and producing positive learning outcomes. Blogging is an increasingly popular web tool that can potentially aid educators by encouraging student self-disclosure. Both content analysis and focus groups were used to assess whether student self-disclosure reveals in descriptive, topical, and evaluative categories. The results indicate that blogging encourages student self-disclosure, and the implications of these findings are also discussed

Clinical Use of Insulin Glargine 300 U/mL in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes : Hypothetical Case Studies

    Get PDF
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a progressive disease, with many individuals eventually requiring basal insulin therapy to maintain glycaemic control. However, there exists considerable therapeutic inertia to the prompt initiation and optimal titration of basal insulin therapy due to barriers that include fear of injections, hypoglycaemia, weight gain, and burdensome regimens. Hypoglycaemia is thought to be a major barrier to optimal glycaemic control and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Newer second-generation basal insulin analogues provide comparable glycaemic control with lower risk of hypoglycaemia compared with first-generation basal insulin analogues. The present review article discusses clinical evidence for one such second-generation basal insulin analogue, insulin glargine 300 U/mL (Gla-300), in the context of hypothetical case studies that are representative of individuals who may attend routine clinical practice. These case studies discuss individualised treatment needs for people with T2D who are insulin-naive or pre-treated. Clinical characteristics such as older age, frequent nocturnal hypoglycaemia, and renal impairment, which are known risk factors for hypoglycaemia, are also considered.Peer reviewe

IDO1 is an Integral Mediator of Inflammatory Neovascularization.

    Get PDF
The immune tolerogenic effects of IDO1 (indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1) have been well documented and genetic studies in mice have clearly established the significance of IDO1 in tumor promotion. Dichotomously, the primary inducer of IDO1, the inflammatory cytokine IFNγ (interferon-γ), is a key mediator of immune-based tumor suppression. One means by which IFNγ can exert an anti-cancer effect is by decreasing tumor neovascularization. We speculated that IDO1 might contribute to cancer promotion by countering this anti-neovascular effect of IFNγ, possibly through IDO1-potentiated elevation of the pro-tumorigenic inflammatory cytokine IL6 (interleukin-6). In this study, we investigated how genetic loss of IDO1 affects neovascularization in mouse models of oxygen-induced retinopathy and lung metastasis. Neovascularization in both models was significantly reduced in mice lacking IDO1, was similarly reduced with loss of IL6, and was restored in both cases by concomitant loss of IFNγ. Likewise, the lack of IDO1 or IL6 resulted in reduced metastatic tumor burden and increased survival, which the concomitant loss of IFNγ abrogated. This insight into IDO1\u27s involvement in pro-tumorigenic inflammatory neovascularization may have important ramifications for IDO1 inhibitor development, not only in cancer where clinical trials are currently ongoing, but in other disease indications associated with neovascularization as well
