A survey on how preregistration affects the research workflow: better science but more work
The preregistration of research protocols and analysis plans is a main reform innovation to counteract confirmation bias in the social and behavioural sciences. While theoretical reasons to preregister are frequently discussed in the literature, the individually experienced advantages and disadvantages of this method remain largely unexplored. The goal of this exploratory study was to identify the perceived benefits and challenges of preregistration from the researcher’s perspective. To this end, we surveyed 355 researchers, 299 of whom had used preregistration in their own work. The researchers indicated the experienced or expected effects of preregistration on their workflow. The results show that experiences and expectations are mostly positive. Researchers in our sample believe that implementing preregistration improves or is likely to improve the quality of their projects. Criticism of preregistration is primarily related to the increase in work-related stress and the overall duration of the project. While the benefits outweighed the challenges for the majority of researchers with preregistration experience, this was not the case for the majority of researchers without preregistration experience. The experienced advantages and disadvantages identified in our survey could inform future efforts to improve preregistration and thus help the methodology gain greater acceptance in the scientific community
Is children's weight a public health or a private family issue?:A qualitative analysis of online discussion about National Child Measurement Programme feedback in England 11 Medical and Health Sciences 1117 Public Health and Health Services
BACKGROUND: The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a child weight monitoring system in England, taking place in the first and final years of primary school. Many local authorities consider it important to inform parents if their child is overweight, and do so by letter alongside the offer of support and advice. Such letters have been met with mixed reactions from parents, but research seeking to better understand parents' responses is often limited by reliance on survey data and low participation rates. This study aimed to collect a broad variety of perspectives on the programme by analyzing views expressed in parent-to-parent discussions posted online.METHODS: UK-based online parenting fora were used to identify discussion threads based around the NCMP between 2010 and 2017. Thirty-one discussion threads from two parent fora were identified. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes in these data.RESULTS: The primary themes identified related to (1) the legitimacy of feedback and judgement from health professionals, (2) the relative importance of collecting population level data above individual preferences, and (3) risks versus benefits of having conversations with children about weight. Most threads adopted an 'argument, counter-argument' format, providing two sides to each issue raised. Information and opinions consistent with public health messages were frequently provided, such as how data are used, that feedback is intended to be helpful, and the importance of collecting national data. There was little evidence of individual parents shifting their views in response to others' arguments.CONCLUSIONS: This study provides novel insight into peer-to-peer debates about the NCMP, including the arguments parents find convincing and acceptable for and against a national programme to weigh children and provide feedback to parents about their weight. Online fora were used as an opportunity to express criticism or distress, but also to seek advice from peers regarding concerns about whether or not to opt-out. Thus, both general issues related to the legitimacy of population screening and outcomes for individual children were of concern to parents.</p
IMAGE PRE-PROCESSING STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING PHOTOGRAMMETRIC 3D RECONSTRUCTION OF UNDERWATER SHIPWRECK DATASETS
Although underwater photogrammetry has become widely adopted, there are still significant unresolved issues that are worthy of attention. This article focuses on the 3D model generation of underwater shipwrecks and intends explicitly to address the problem of dealing with sub-optimal datasets. Even if the definition of best practices and standards to be adopted during the acquisition phase appears to be crucial, there is a massive amount of data gathered so far by professionals and the scientific community all over the world that cannot be ignored. The compelling idea is to attempt to achieve the best reconstruction results possible, even from sub-optimal or less-than-ideal image datasets. This work focuses on the investigation of different strategies and approaches for balancing the quality of the photogrammetric products, without neglecting their reliability concerning the surveyed object. The case study of this research is the Mandalay MHT, a 34 m long steel-hulled auxiliary schooner that sank in 1966 and now lies in the Biscayne National Park (Florida - USA). The dataset has been provided by the Submerged Resources Center (SRC) of the US National Park Service, in order to develop an experimental image enhancement method functional to the virtualization and visualization of the generated products, as a part of a sustainable, affordable, and reliable method of studying submerged artefacts and sites. The original images have been processed using different image enhancement approaches, and the outputs have been compared and analysed
Kovacs effects in an aging molecular liquid
We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations the aging behavior of a
molecular model of ortho-terphenyl. We find evidence of a a non-monotonic
evolution of the volume during an isothermal-isobaric equilibration process, a
phenomenon known in polymeric systems as Kovacs effect. We characterize this
phenomenology in terms of landscape properties, providing evidence that, far
from equilibrium, the system explores region of the potential energy landscape
distinct from the one explored in thermal equilibrium. We discuss the relevance
of our findings for the present understanding of the thermodynamics of the

Relationships Among HIV/AIDS Orphanhood, Stigma, and Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in South African Youth: A Longitudinal Investigation Using a Path Analysis Framework
Cross-sectional research has demonstrated that HIV/AIDS orphanhood is associated with anxiety and depression and that HIV/AIDS-related stigma is a risk factor for these outcomes. This study used a longitudinal data set to determine whether relationships between HIV/AIDS orphanhood and anxiety/depression scores (measured at 4-year follow-up) operate indirectly via perceived stigma. Youths from poor communities around Cape Town were interviewed in 2005 (n = 1,025) and followed up in 2009 (n = 723). At baseline, HIV/AIDS-orphaned youth reported significantly higher stigma and depression scores than youth not orphaned by HIV/AIDS. At follow-up, HIV/AIDS-orphaned youth reported significantly higher stigma, anxiety, and depression scores. However, HIV/AIDS orphanhood was not directly associated with anxiety or depression. Instead, significant indirect effects (operating through perceived stigma) were obtained for both assessment periods. Results demonstrate that stigma persists across time and appears to mediate relationships between HIV/AIDS orphanhood and psychological distress. Interventions aiming to reduce stigma may help promote the mental health of HIV/AIDS-orphaned youth
A multi-color and Fourier study of RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster NGC 5272 (M3)
We have performed a detailed study of the pulsational and evolutionary
characteristics of 133 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC5272 (M3)
using highly accurate BVI data taken on 5 separate epochs. M3 seems to contain
no less than ~32% of Blazhko stars, and the occurrence and characteristics of
the Blazhko effect have been analyzed in detail. We have identified a good
number (~ 14%) of overluminous RR Lyrae stars that are likely in a more
advanced evolutionary stage off the Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB). Physical
parameters (i.e. temperature, luminosity, mass) have been derived from (B--V)
colors and accurate color-temperature calibration, and compared with Horizontal
Branch evolutionary models and with the requirements of stellar pulsation
theory. Additional analysis by means of Fourier decomposition of the V light
curves confirms, as expected, that no metallicity spread is present in M3.
Evolution off the ZAHB does not affect [Fe/H] determinations, whereas Blazhko
stars at low amplitude phase do affect [Fe/H] distributions as they appear more
metal-rich. Absolute magnitudes derived from Fourier coefficients might provide
useful average estimates for groups of stars, if applicable, but do not give
reliable {\em individual} values. Intrinsic colors derived from Fourier
coefficients show significant discrepancies with the observed ones, hence the
resulting temperatures and temperature-related parameters are unreliable.Comment: 86 pages, 19 figures, 13 tables, in press A
