    Efecto del perifiton fijado a substratos artificiales sobre la producción de Penaeus vannamei en cultivo semi-intensivo

    En el cultivo de peneidos, la alimentación balanceada representa el mayor costo de producción, este puede variar entre 28% y 50%, y parte de la inversión en estas dietas artificiales puede ser perdida debido a una inadecuada formulación o debido a la baja asimilación. Las partículas de alimento no ingerido y/o no asimilado producen un exceso de materia orgánica que al degradarse forman compuestos como amonio, fosfatos, sulfuros, ácidos orgánicos que generan efluentes excesivamente cargados de nutrientes los cuales causan la eutrofización de las aguas receptoras. En contraste, varios estudios han indicado que los organismos de la productividad acuática natural son de gran valor alimenticio y nutritivo para las especies en cultivo, especialmente para los del género Penaeus por sus hábitos alimenticios, esto podría reducir significativamente los costos de producción y los riesgos de contaminación del agua debido al uso inadecuado de dietas artificiales

    EFFECT OF TOOL TIP RADIUS ON RING DEBARKER PERFORMANCE OF FROZEN AND UNFROZEN BLACK SPRUCE LOGS

    The effects of the tool tip radius on debarking quality of unfrozen and frozen black spruce logs were studied. The power, energy consumption and torque on frozen conditions were also studied. A proto-type one-arm ring debarker was used. The experiment consisted of debarking logs using three tool tip radii (40, 180, and 300 ”m) for each temperature (-20°C and +20°C). The rotational and feed speeds, tip overlap, and rake angle were kept constants. Debarking quality was evaluated by two criteria: the proportion of bark remaining on log surfaces and the amount of wood in bark residues (WIB). Log characteristics, used as covariates, ie dimensions, eccentricity, bark thickness, knot features, bark/wood shear strength (BWSS), basic densities and moisture contents of sapwood and bark were measured, as well as total removed material after debarking. The results showed that tool tip radius had a significant effect on debarking quality of frozen and unfrozen logs. The proportion of bark on log surfaces increased and the amount of WIB decreased as tip radius increased. At the same applied radial force, a wider tip radius showed a shallower tip penetration leaving bigger regions of bark on the log surfaces. In contrast, a narrower tip radius showed a deeper tip penetration resulting in important wood fiber tear-out. The bark thickness and inner bark MC also affected debarking quality. The mean power, mean torque, and energy consumption increased as the tip radius decreased. However, this effect will depend on the choice of the applied radial force during debarking. Motor performance was also affected by the total removed material, log diameter, and BWSS. Overall, the results highlight the importance of choosing an adequate combination of tool tip radius and applied radial force to obtain the most profitable debarking quality with an efficient energy consumption

    High seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in a subset of Mexican patients with work accidents and low socioeconomic status

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Toxoplasma gondii </it>has been associated with reflex impairment and traffic accidents. It is unknown whether <it>Toxoplasma </it>infection might be associated with work accidents. Therefore, using a case-control seroprevalence study design, 133 patients with a recent work accident and 266 control subjects of the general population from the same region were examined with enzyme-linked immunoassays for the presence and levels of anti-<it>Toxoplasma </it>IgG antibodies and anti-<it>Toxoplasma </it>IgM antibodies. Socio-demographic, work, clinical and behavioral characteristics from each worker were obtained.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eleven (8.3%) of 133 patients, and 14 (5.3%) of 266 controls had anti-<it>T. gondii </it>IgG antibodies. Anti-<it>T. gondii </it>IgG levels were higher than 150 IU/ml in 8 (6%) patients and 10 (3.8%) controls. Anti-<it>T. gondii </it>IgM antibodies were found in one (0.8%) of the workers, and in 6 (2.3%) of the controls. No statistically significant differences in the IgG seroprevalences, frequencies of high IgG levels, and IgM seroprevalences among patients and controls were found. In contrast, a low socio-economic level in patients with work accidents was associated with <it>Toxoplasma </it>seropositivity (<it>P </it>= 0.01). Patients with work accidents and low socioeconomic status showed a significantly (OR = 3.38; 95% CI: 0.84-16.06; <it>P </it>= 0.04) higher seroprevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>infection than controls of the same socioeconomic status (15.1% vs. 5%, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed a positive association of <it>T. gondii </it>infection with boar meat consumption (OR = 3.04; 95% CI: 1.03-8.94; <it>P </it>= 0.04). In contrast, a negative association between <it>T. gondii </it>infection and national trips (OR = 0.40; 95% CI: 0.17-0.96; <it>P </it>= 0.04), sausage consumption (OR = 0.20; 95% CI: 0.05-0.68; <it>P </it>= 0.01), and ham consumption (OR = 0.16; 95% CI: 0.05-0.51; <it>P </it>= 0.002) was found.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the study described here seropositivity to <it>T. gondii </it>was associated to work accidents in a subset of patients with low socioeconomic status. This is the first report of an association of <it>T. gondii </it>infection and work accidents. Further studies to confirm our results are needed. Results may help in designing optimal prevention strategies to avoid <it>T. gondii </it>infection.</p

    Direct Use of Carboxylic Acids in the Photocatalytic Hydroacylation of Styrenes To Generate Dialkyl Ketones

    A general protocol for the hydroacylation of styrenes from aliphatic carboxylic acids is reported. These reactions proceed via ÎČ-scission of a phosphoranyl radical that is accessed by photoredox catalysis, followed by addition of the resulting acyl radical to the styrenyl olefin. We show that phosphine tunability is critical for efficient intermolecular coupling due to competitive quenching of the photocatalyst by the olefin. Primary, secondary, and structurally rigid tertiary carboxylic acids all generate valuable unsymmetrical dialkyl ketones

    Exploring the influence of meteorological conditions on the performance of a waste stabilization pond at high altitude with structural equation modeling

    Algal photosynthesis plays a key role in the removal mechanisms of waste stabilization ponds (WSPs), which is indicated in the variations of three parameters, dissolved oxygen, pH, and chlorophyll a. These variations can be considerably affected by extreme climatic conditions at high altitude. To investigate these effects, three sampling campaigns were conducted in a high-altitude WSP in Cuenca (Ecuador). From the collected data, the first application of structure equation modeling (SEM) on a pond system was fitted to analyze the influence of high-altitude characteristics on pond performance, especially on the three indicators. Noticeably, air temperature appeared as the highest influencing factors as low temperature at high altitude can greatly decrease the growth rate of microorganisms. Strong wind and large diurnal variations of temperature, 7-20 degrees C, enhanced flow efficiency by improving mixing inside the ponds. Intense solar radiation brought both advantages and disadvantages as it boosted oxygen level during the day but promoted algal overgrowth causing oxygen depletion during the night. From these findings, the authors proposed insightful recommendations for future design, monitoring, and operation of high-altitude WSPs. Moreover, we also recommended SEM to pond engineers as an effective tool for better simulation of such complex systems like WSPs

    Helmholtz theorem and the v-gauge in the problem of superluminal and instantaneous signals in classical electrodynamics

    In this work we substantiate the applying of the Helmholtz vector decomposition theorem (H-theorem) to vector fields in classical electrodynamics. Using the H-theorem, within the framework of the two-parameter Lorentz-like gauge (so called v-gauge), we show that two kinds of magnetic vector potentials exist: one of them (solenoidal) can act exclusively with the velocity of light c and the other one (irrotational) with an arbitrary finite velocity vv (including a velocity more than c . We show also that the irrotational component of the electric field has a physical meaning and can propagate exclusively instantaneously.Comment: This variant has been accepted for publication in Found.     Mantle dynamics of the Andean Subduction Zone from continent-scale teleseismic S-wave tomography

    The Andean Subduction Zone is one of the longest continuous subduction zones on Earth. The relative simplicity of the two-plate system has makes it an ideal natural laboratory to study the dynamics in subduction zones. We measure teleseismic S and SKS traveltime residuals at >1000 seismic stations that have been deployed across South America over the last 30 yr to produce a finite-frequency teleseismic S-wave tomography model of the mantle beneath the Andean Subduction Zone related to the Nazca Plate, spanning from ~5°N to 45°S and from depths of ~130 to 1200 km. Within our model, the subducted Nazca slab is imaged as a fast velocity seismic anomaly. The geometry and amplitude of the Nazca slab anomaly varies along the margin while the slab anomaly continues into the lower mantle along the entirety of the subduction margin. Beneath northern Brazil, the Nazca slab appears to stagnate at ~1000 km depth and extend eastward subhorizontally for >2000 km. South of 25°S the slab anomaly in the lower mantle extends offshore of eastern Argentina, hence we do not image if a similar stagnation occurs. We image several distinct features surrounding the slab including two vertically oriented slow seismic velocity anomalies: one beneath the Peruvian flat slab and the other beneath the Paranå Basin of Brazil. The presence of the latter anomaly directly adjacent to the stagnant Nazca slab suggests that the plume, known as the Paranå Plume, may be a focused upwelling formed in response to slab stagnation in the lower mantle. Additionally, we image a high amplitude fast seismic velocity anomaly beneath the Chile trench at the latitude of the Sierras Pampeanas which extends from ~400 to ~1000 km depth. This anomaly may be the remnants of an older, detached slab, however its relationship with the Nazca-South America subduction zone remains enigmatic.Fil: Rodríguez, Emily E..
