Earth matter density uncertainty in atmospheric neutrino oscillations
That muon neutrinos oscillating into the mixture of tau neutrinos
and sterile neutrinos has been studied to explain the
atmospheric disappearance. In this scenario, the effect of Earth
matter is a key to determine the fraction of . Considering that the
Earth matter density has uncertainty and this uncertainty has significant
effects in some neutrino oscillation cases, such as the CP violation in very
long baseline neutrino oscillations and the day-night asymmetry for solar
neutrinos, we study the effects caused by this uncertainty in the above
atmospheric oscillation scenario. We find that this uncertainty
seems to have no significant effects and that the previous fitting results need

The Lehmann discontinuity
Recent reflections by Inge Lehmann on her discovery of the inner core (Eos, January 20, 1987, p. 33; see also Bolt [1987, 1982]) remind us that this outstanding Earth scientist is now in her 100th year. The inner core boundary (ICB) is one of the three great seismic-compositional discontinuities that divide Earth into crust, mantle, core, and inner core. The other two discontinuities are well known by names honoring their discoverers, Andrija Mohorovicic and Beno Gutenberg. In this tradition, it is fitting that the ICB be called the Lehmann Discontinuity in honor of its discoverer
High Speed Photometry of SDSS J013701.06-091234.9
We present high speed photometry of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey cataclysmic
variable SDSS J013701.06-091234.9 in quiescence and during its 2003 December
superoutburst. The orbital modulation at 79.71\pm0.01 min is double humped; the
superhump period is 81.702\pm0.007 min. Towards the end of the outburst late
superhumps with a period of 81.29\pm0.01 min were observed. We argue that this
is a system of very low mass transfer rate, and that it probably has a long

CIRCULAR DICHROISM OF LIGHT-HARVESTING COMPLEXES FROM PURPLE PHOTOSYNTHETIC BACTERIA
The CD spectra of a range of antenna complexes from several different species of purple photosynthetic bacteria were recorded in the wavelength range of 190 to 930 nm. Analysis of the far UV CD (190 to 250 nm) showed that in each case except for the B800-850 from Chr. vinosum the secondary structure of the light-harvesting complexes contains a large amount of α-helix (50%) and very little 0-pleated sheet. This confirms the predictions of the group of Zuber of a high a-helical content based upon consideration of the primary structures of several antenna apoproteins. The CD spectra from the carotenoids and the bacteriochlorophylls show considerable variations depending upon the type of antenna complex. The different amplitude ratios in the CD spectrum for the bacteriochlorophyll Qy, Qx and Soret bands indicate not only different degrees of exciton coupling, but also a strong and variable hyperchromism (Scherz and Parson, 1984a, b)
Investigation of the reactivity of AlCl3 and CoCl2 toward molten alkali-metal nitrates in order to synthesize CoAl2O4
Cobalt aluminate CoAl2O4 powder, constituted of nano-sized crystallites, is prepared, involving the reactivity of AlCl3 and CoCl2 with molten alkali-metal nitrates. The reaction at 450 °C for 2 h leads to a mixture of spinel oxide Co3O4 and amorphous γ-Al2O3. It is transformed into the spinel
oxide CoAl2O4 by heating at 1000 °C. The powders are mainly characterized by XRD, FTIR, ICP, electron microscopy and diffraction, X-EDS and diffuse reflection. Their properties are compared to those of powders obtained by solid state reactions of a mechanical mixture of chlorides or oxides submitted to the same thermal treatment
Photometric study of new southern SU UMa-type dwarf novae and candidates: V877 Ara, KK Tel and PU CMa
We photometrically observed three dwarf novae V877 Ara, KK Tel and PU CMa. We
discovered undisputed presence of superhumps in V877 Ara and KK Tel, with mean
periods of 0.08411(2) d and 0.08808(3) d, respectively. Both V877 Ara and KK
Tel are confirmed to belong to long-period SU UMa-type dwarf novae. In V877
Ara, we found a large decrease of the superhump period (dot(P)/P = -14.5 +/-
2.1 x 10^(-5)). There is evidence that the period of KK Tel decreased at a
similar or a more exceptional rate. Coupled with the past studies of superhump
period changes, these findings suggest that a previously neglected diversity of
phenomena is present in long-period SU UMa-type dwarf novae. The present
discovery of a diversity in long-period SU UMa-type systems would become an
additional step toward a full understanding the dwarf nova phenomenon. PU CMa
is shown to be an excellent candidate for an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. We
examined the outburst properties of these dwarf novae, and derived
characteristic outburst recurrence times. Combined with the recently published
measurement of the orbital period of PU CMa, we propose that PU CMa is the
first object filling the gap between the extreme WZ Sge-type and ER UMa-type

The role of endogenous versus exogenous sources in the exposome of putative genotoxins and consequences for risk assessment
The “totality” of the human exposure is conceived to encompass life-associated endogenous and exogenous aggregate exposures. Process-related contaminants (PRCs) are not only formed in foods by heat processing, but also occur endogenously in the organism as physiological components of energy metabolism, potentially also generated by the human microbiome. To arrive at a comprehensive risk assessment, it is necessary to understand the contribution of in vivo background occurrence as compared to the ingestion from exogenous sources. Hence, this review provides an overview of the knowledge on the contribution of endogenous exposure to the overall exposure to putative genotoxic food contaminants, namely ethanol, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, acrylamide, acrolein, α,β-unsaturated alkenals, glycation compounds, N-nitroso compounds, ethylene oxide, furans, 2- and 3-MCPD, and glycidyl esters. The evidence discussed herein allows to conclude that endogenous formation of some contaminants appears to contribute substantially to the exposome. This is of critical importance for risk assessment in the cases where endogenous exposure is suspected to outweigh the exogenous one (e.g. formaldehyde and acrolein)
