Demonstration of Non-Deterministic Quantum Logic Operations using Linear Optical Elements
Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn recently showed that non-deterministic quantum
logic operations could be performed using linear optical elements, additional
photons (ancilla), and post-selection based on the output of single-photon
detectors [Nature 409, 46 (2001)]. Here we report the experimental
demonstration of two logic devices of this kind, a destructive controlled-NOT
(CNOT) gate and a quantum parity check. These two devices can be combined with
a pair of entangled photons to implement a conventional (non-destructive) CNOT
that succeeds with a probability of 1/4.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; Minor change

Shear thinning in dilute and semidilute solutions of polystyrene and DNA
The viscosity of dilute and semidilute unentangled DNA solutions, in steady
simple shear flow, has been measured across a range of temperatures and
concentrations. For polystyrene solutions, measurements of viscosity have been
carried out in the semidilute unentangled regime, while results of prior
experimental measurements in the dilute regime have been used for the purpose
of data analysis, and for comparison with the behaviour of DNA solutions.
Interpretation of the shear rate dependence of viscosity in terms of suitably
defined non-dimensional variables, is shown to lead to master plots,
independent of temperature and concentration, in each of the two concentration
regimes. In the case of semidilute unentangled solutions, defining the
Weissenberg number in terms of a concentration dependent large scale relaxation
time is found not to lead to data collapse across different concentrations. On
the other hand, the use of an alternative relaxation time, with the
concentration dependence of a single correlation blob, suggests the existence
of universal shear thinning behaviour at large shear rates.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, supplementary material (see ancillary

Factors Contributing to CO Uptake and Elimination in the Body: A Critical Review
BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is an important public health issue around the world. Research indicates that many factors may be related to the rate of CO uptake and elimination in the human body. However, some factors related to CO uptake and elimination are considered controversial. Relatively little attention has been devoted to review and synthesis of factors affecting CO uptake and elimination. PURPOSE: This paper provides a critical scoping review of the factors and divides them into four aspects, including environmental, demographic, physiological and treatment factors. METHODS: We searched the scientific databases for research that has proposed a mathematical equation as a synthesis of quantities related to CO poisoning, CO elimination, CO uptake, CO half-life, CO uptake and elimination and their relationships. After excluding the studies that did not meet the study criteria, there were 39 studies included in the review and the search was completed before 16 December 2019. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: This review discusses most of the factors that impact the rate of CO uptake and elimination. Several factors may be related to CO uptake and elimination, such as CO concentration, the duration of exposure to CO, age, sex, exercise, minute ventilation, alveolar ventilation, total haemoglobin mass and different treatments for CO poisoning. Although some potential factors were not included in the review, the findings are useful by presenting an overview for discussing factors affecting CO uptake and elimination and provide a starting point for further study regarding strategies for CO poisoning and the environmental standard of CO
A new approach to the inverse problem for current mapping in thin-film superconductors
A novel mathematical approach has been developed to complete the inversion of
the Biot-Savart law in one- and two-dimensional cases from measurements of the
perpendicular component of the magnetic field using the well-developed
Magneto-Optical Imaging technique. Our approach, especially in the 2D case, is
provided in great detail to allow a straightforward implementation as opposed
to those found in the literature. Our new approach also refines our previous
results for the 1D case [Johansen et al., Phys. Rev. B 54, 16264 (1996)], and
streamlines the method developed by Jooss et al. [Physica C 299, 215 (1998)]
deemed as the most accurate if compared to that of Roth et al. [J. Appl. Phys.
65, 361 (1989)]. We also verify and streamline the iterative technique, which
was developed following Laviano et al. [Supercond. Sci. Technol. 16, 71 (2002)]
to account for in-plane magnetic fields caused by the bending of the applied
magnetic field due to the demagnetising effect. After testing on
magneto-optical images of a high quality YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting thin film,
we show that the procedure employed is effective
A Role for the Kolliker-Fuse Nucleus in Cholinergic Modulation of Breathing at Night During Wakefulness and NREM Sleep
For many years, acetylcholine has been known to contribute to the control of breathing and sleep. To probe further the contributions of cholinergic rostral pontine systems in control of breathing, we designed this study to test the hypothesis that microdialysis (MD) of the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine into the pontine respiratory group (PRG) would decrease breathing more in animals while awake than while in NREM sleep. In 16 goats, cannulas were bilaterally implanted into rostral pontine tegmental nuclei (n = 3), the lateral (n = 3) or medial (n = 4) parabrachial nuclei, or the Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFN; n = 6). After \u3e2 wk of recovery from surgery, the goats were studied during a 45-min period of MD with mock cerebrospinal fluid (mCSF), followed by at least 30 min of recovery and a second 45-min period of MD with atropine. Unilateral and bilateral MD studies were completed during the day and at night. MD of atropine into the KFN at night decreased pulmonary ventilation and breathing frequency and increased inspiratory and expiratory time by 12–14% during both wakefulness and NREM sleep. However, during daytime studies, MD of atropine into the KFN had no effect on these variables. Unilateral and bilateral nighttime MD of atropine into the KFN increased levels of NREM sleep by 63 and 365%, respectively. MD during the day or at night into the other three pontine sites had minimal effects on any variable studied. Finally, compared with MD of mCSF, bilateral MD of atropine decreased levels of acetylcholine and choline in the effluent dialysis fluid. Our data support the concept that the KFN is a significant contributor to cholinergically modulated control of breathing and sleep
