    An Atom Laser is not monochromatic

    We study both numerically and analytically the possibility of using an adiabatic passage control method to construct a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the time domain, in exact one-to-one correspondence with the traditional optical MZI that involves two beam splitters and two mirrors. The interference fringes one obtains from such a minimum-disturbance set up clearly demonstrates that, fundamentally, an atom laser is not monochromatic due to interatomic interactions. We also consider how the amount of entanglement in the system correlates to the interference fringes.Comment: 4 figures. Submitted for publicatio

    Why Does China Allow Freer Social Media? Protests Versus Surveillance And Propaganda

    In this paper, we document basic facts regarding public debates about controversial political issues on Chinese social media. Our documentation is based on a dataset of 13.2 billion blog posts published on Sina Weibo--the most prominent Chinese microblogging platform--during the 2009-2013 period. Our primary finding is that a shockingly large number of posts on highly sensitive topics were published and circulated on social media. For instance, we find millions of posts discussing protests, and these posts are informative in predicting the occurrence of specific events. We find an even larger number of posts with explicit corruption allegations, and that these posts predict future corruption charges of specific individuals. Our findings challenge a popular view that an authoritarian regime would relentlessly censor or even ban social media. Instead, the interaction of an authoritarian government with social media seems more complex.published_or_final_versio

    The role of animal-assisted therapy in initial psychotherapy sessions with adolescents

    Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is defined as a goal directed intervention in which an animal, meeting specific criteria, is an integral part of the treatment process (Nebbe, 1995, p. 40). Since its first introduction into the scientific community in the 1960s, AAT has grown in both recognition and application. This is primarily attributable to the characteristics of AAT that allow it to be appropriate for a wide range of populations. These qualities are shown to be especially effective in research with children (Menzies Inc., 2003). Interventions that exercise the advantageous qualities of AAT, and its service in promoting the well being of young children, have evolved from teaching humane education to more specialized functions that concentrate on specific disorders and mental health. With that said, little research has focused on the effectiveness of AAT as a targeted therapeutic modality within the adolescent population (Kruger, Trachtenberg & Serpell, 2004). Mental health practitioners report adolescents as one of the most challenging populations to work with; yet few adapted approaches to traditional therapy have been designed to complement adolescent developmental needs. The original intent of this project was to examine the effectiveness of AAT in decreasing adolescent resistance in initial therapy sessions. Regrettably, the initial questions introduced by the examiner could not be investigated as proposed. In its place, a personal and practical exploration into the barriers and challenges facing researchers within the field will be described, along with implications for current practitioners

    Forehead Skin Blood Flow in Normal Neonates during Active and Quiet Sleep, Measured with a Diode Laser Doppler Instrument

    Changes in forehead skin blood flow during active and quiet sleep were determined in 16 healthy neonates using a recently developed semi-conductor laser Doppler flow meter without light conducting fibres. Measurements were carried out at a postnatal age varying from 5 hours to 7 days. The two sleep states could be distinguished in 17 recordings. The mean skin blood flow values during active sleep were significantly higher (p<0.01) than those during quiet sleep, the mean increase being 28.1%. The variability of the flow signal, expressed as the coefficient of variation, changed significantly from 23.1% during active sleep to 18.2% during quiet sleep
