    We determine the (bound) ground state of a spin 1/2 chargless particle with anomalous magnetic moment in certain Aharonov-Casher configurations. We recast the description of the system in a supersymmetric form. Then the basic physical requirements for unbroken supersymmetry are established. We comment on the possibility of neutron trapping in these systems

    Calculating error bars for neutrino mixing parameters

    One goal of contemporary particle physics is to determine the mixing angles and mass-squared differences that constitute the phenomenological constants that describe neutrino oscillations. Of great interest are not only the best fit values of these constants but also their errors. Some of the neutrino oscillation data is statistically poor and cannot be treated by normal (Gaussian) statistics. To extract confidence intervals when the statistics are not normal, one should not utilize the value for chisquare versus confidence level taken from normal statistics. Instead, we propose that one should use the normalized likelihood function as a probability distribution; the relationship between the correct chisquare and a given confidence level can be computed by integrating over the likelihood function. This allows for a definition of confidence level independent of the functional form of the !2 function; it is particularly useful for cases in which the minimum of the !2 function is near a boundary. We present two pedagogic examples and find that the proposed method yields confidence intervals that can differ significantly from those obtained by using the value of chisquare from normal statistics. For example, we find that for the first data release of the T2K experiment the probability that chisquare is not zero, as defined by the maximum confidence level at which the value of zero is not allowed, is 92%. Using the value of chisquare at zero and assigning a confidence level from normal statistics, a common practice, gives the over estimation of 99.5%.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Qubits entanglement dynamics modified by an effective atomic environment

    We study entanglement dynamics of a couple of two-level atoms resonantly interacting with a cavity mode and embedded in a dispersive atomic environment. We show that in the absence of the environment the entanglement reaches its maximum value when only one exitation is involved. Then, we find that the atomic environment modifies that entanglement dynamics and induces a typical collapse-revival structure even for an initial one photon Fock state of the field.Comment: eight pages, two figure include

    Decoherence assisting a measurement-driven quantum evolution process

    We study the problem of driving an unknown initial mixed quantum state onto a known pure state without using unitary transformations. This can be achieved, in an efficient manner, with the help of sequential measurements on at least two unbiased bases. However here we found that, when the system is affected by a decoherence mechanism, only one observable is required in order to achieve the same goal. In this way the decoherence can assist the process. We show that, depending on the sort of decoherence, the process can converge faster or slower than the method implemented by means of two complementary observables.Comment: Four pages, three figures included ([email protected]

    Confronting Sources of Systematic Error to Resolve Historically Contentious Relationships: A Case Study Using Gadiform Fishes (Teleostei, Paracanthopterygii, Gadiformes)

    Reliable estimation of phylogeny is central to avoid inaccuracy in downstream macroevolutionary inferences. However, limitations exist in the implementation of concatenated and summary coalescent approaches, and Bayesian and full coalescent inference methods may not yet be feasible for computation of phylogeny using complicated models and large data sets. Here, we explored methodological (e.g., optimality criteria, character sampling, model selection) and biological (e.g., heterotachy, branch length heterogeneity) sources of systematic error that can result in biased or incorrect parameter estimates when reconstructing phylogeny by using the gadiform fishes as a model clade. Gadiformes include some of the most economically important fishes in the world (e.g., Cods, Hakes, and Rattails). Despite many attempts, a robust higher-level phylogenetic framework was lacking due to limited character and taxonomic sampling, particularly from several species-poor families that have been recalcitrant to phylogenetic placement. We compiled the first phylogenomic data set, including 14,208 loci (⁠\u3e role= presentation \u3e\u3e2.8 M bp) from 58 species representing all recognized gadiform families, to infer a time-calibrated phylogeny for the group. Data were generated with a gene-capture approach targeting coding DNA sequences from single-copy protein-coding genes. Species-tree and concatenated maximum-likelihood (ML) analyses resolved all family-level relationships within Gadiformes. While there were a few differences between topologies produced by the DNA and the amino acid data sets, most of the historically unresolved relationships among gadiform lineages were consistently well resolved with high support in our analyses regardless of the methodological and biological approaches used. However, at deeper levels, we observed inconsistency in branch support estimates between bootstrap and gene and site coefficient factors (gCF, sCF). Despite numerous short internodes, all relationships received unequivocal bootstrap support while gCF and sCF had very little support, reflecting hidden conflict across loci. Most of the gene-tree and species-tree discordance in our study is a result of short divergence times, and consequent lack of informative characters at deep levels, rather than incomplete lineage sorting. We use this phylogeny to establish a new higher-level classification of Gadiformes as a way of clarifying the evolutionary diversification of the order. We recognize 17 families in five suborders: Bregmacerotoidei, Gadoidei, Ranicipitoidei, Merluccioidei, and Macrouroidei (including two subclades). A time-calibrated analysis using 15 fossil taxa suggests that Gadiformes evolved ∼ role= presentation \u3e∼79.5 Ma in the late Cretaceous, but that most extant lineages diverged after the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction (66 Ma). Our results reiterate the importance of examining phylogenomic analyses for evidence of systematic error that can emerge as a result of unsuitable modeling of biological factors and/or methodological issues, even when data sets are large and yield high support for phylogenetic relationships.     Fuel consumption and friction benefits of low viscosity engine oils for heavy duty applications

    [EN] One of the most attractive ways to tackle vehicle engine's inefficiencies is the use of Low Viscosity Engine Oils (LVEO). Adopted some decades ago for their use in the Light Duty segment, LVEO are now reaching the Heavy Duty segment. In this study, a comparative fuel consumption test, where a LVEO performance is evaluated on an urban compressed natural gas buses fleet is portrayed. Then the friction performance of the same oils are studied on a Cameron-Plint tribometer, on an adapted twin disc tribometer to simulate journal bearing friction and on a Ball-on-Disc rig, using real engine parts in the former and the same set of engine oils used during the fleet test.     Variabilidade genética para caracteres morfométricos de matrizes de castanha-do-brasil da Amazônia Matogrossense.

    O presente estudo objetivou estudar a variabilidade genética de matrizes de Bertholletia excelsa através da estimação de parâmetros e ganhos genéticos para os caracteres peso/ouriço (g), peso de sementes/ouriço (g) e número de sementes/ouriço no prémelhoramento da espécie. Foram utilizadas 90 matrizes de polinização aberta, sendo 30 matrizes de cada tipo, denominadas localmente de rajada, mirim e rosa, no município de Cotriguaçu, noroeste de Mato Grosso, região amazônica. O experimento foi estabelecido sob delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com 90 tratamentos (matrizes) e seis ouriços por matriz, com suas respectivas sementes. As variáveis foram analisadas usando-se a metodologia de modelo linear misto do software SELEGENREML/ BLUP. Os coeficientes de herdabilidades individuais no sentido amplo dos efeitos genotípicos totais (0,21, 0,14 e 0,34) para os caracteres peso/ouriço (g), peso de sementes/ouriço (g) e número de sementes/ouriço, respectivamente, são considerados moderados para os dois primeiros caracteres e alto para o caráter número de sementes/ouriço, sugerindo expressivo controle genético. A seleção das 10 melhores matrizes revelou predominância da procedência do tipo rosa, proporcionando ganhos genéticos expressivos de pelo menos 24,16% para peso/ouriço (g), 27,44% para peso de sementes/ouriço e 16,92% para o caráter número de sementes por ouriço. Os valores expressivos das matrizes do tipo rosa estimulam a utilização desses germoplasmas em programas de melhoramento genético da espécie, na seqüência das avaliações, bem como apontando para a possibilidade de obtenção de híbridos intraespecíficos para caracteres desejáveis
