Singular Effects of Impurities near the Ferromagnetic Quantum-Critical Point
Systematic theoretical results for the effects of a dilute concentration of
magnetic impurities on the thermodynamic and transport properties in the region
around the quantum critical point of a ferromagnetic transition are obtained.
In the quasi-classical regime, the dynamical spin fluctuations enhance the
Kondo temperature. This energy scale decreases rapidly in the quantum
fluctuation regime, where the properties are those of a line of critical points
of the multichannel Kondo problem with the number of channels increasing as the
critical point is approached, except at unattainably low temperatures where a

Coupled SDW and Superconducting Order in FFLO State of CeCoIn
The mechanism of incommensurate (IC) spin-density-wave (SDW) order observed
in the Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase of CeCoIn is discussed
on the basis of new mode-coupling scheme among IC-SDW order, two
superconducting orders of FFLO with B () symmetry
and -pairing of odd-parity. Unlike the mode-coupling schemes proposed by
Kenzelmann et al, Sciencexpress, 21 August (2008), that proposed in the present
Letter can offer a simple explanation for why the IC-SDW order is observed only
in FFLO phase and the IC wave vector is rather robust against the magnetic

Theory of Quasi-Universal Ratio of Seebeck Coefficient to Specific Heat in Zero-Temperature Limit in Correlated Metals
It is shown that the quasi-universal ratio of
the Seebeck coefficient to the specific heat in the limit of T=0 observed in a
series of strongly correlated metals can be understood on the basis of the
Fermi liquid theory description. In deriving this result, it is crucial that a
relevant scattering arises from impurities, but not from the mutual scattering
of quasiparticles. The systematics of the sign of is shown to reflect the
sign of the logarithmic derivative of the density of states and the inverse
mass tensor of the quasiparticles, explaining the systematics of experiments.
In particular, the positive sign of for Ce-based and -based heavy
fermions, and the negative sign for Yb-based and -based heavy fermions,
are explained. The case of non-Fermi liquid near the quantum critical point
(QCP) is briefly mentioned, showing that the ratio decreases considerably
toward antiferromagnetic QCP while it remains essentially unchanged for the
ferromagnetic QCP or QCP due to a local criticality.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Signatures of valence fluctuations in CeCu2Si2 under high pressure
Simultaneous resistivity and a.c.-specific heat measurements have been
performed under pressure on single crystalline CeCu2Si2 to over 6 GPa in a
hydrostatic helium pressure medium. A series of anomalies were observed around
the pressure coinciding with a maximum in the superconducting critical
temperature, . These anomalies can be linked with an abrupt change
of the Ce valence, and suggest a second quantum critical point at a pressure
GPa, where critical valence fluctuations provide the
superconducting pairing mechanism, as opposed to spin fluctuations at ambient
pressure. Such a valence instability, and associated superconductivity, is
predicted by an extended Anderson lattice model with Coulomb repulsion between
the conduction and f-electrons. We explain the T-linear resistivity found at
in this picture, while other anomalies found around can be

1 um Excess Sources in the UKIDSS - I. Three T Dwarfs in the SDSS Southern Equatorial Stripe
We report the discovery of two field brown dwarfs, ULAS J0128-0041 and ULAS
J0321+0051, and the rediscovery of ULAS J0226+0051 (IfA 0230-Z1), in the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) southern equatorial stripe. They are found in the
course of our follow-up observation program of 1 um excess sources in the
United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey. The Gemini
Multi-Object Spectrographs spectra at red optical wavelengths (6500-10500 A)
are presented, which reveal that they are early-T dwarfs. The classification is
also supported by their optical to near-infrared colors. It is noted that ULAS
J0321+0051 is one of the faintest currently known T dwarfs. The estimated
distances to the three objects are 50-110 pc, thus they are among the most
distant field T dwarfs known. Dense temporal coverage of the target fields
achieved by the SDSS-II Supernova Survey allows us to perform a simple
time-series analysis, which leads to the finding of significant proper motions
of 150-290 mas/yr or the transverse velocities of 40-100 km/s for ULAS
J0128-0041 and ULAS J0226+0051. We also find that there are no detectable,
long-term (a-few-year) brightness variations above a few times 0.1 mag for the

Functionally Distinct Subsets of CD1d-restricted Natural Killer T Cells Revealed by CD1d Tetramer Staining
CD1d-restricted natural killer (NK)T cells are known to potently secrete T helper (Th)1 and Th2 cytokines and to mediate cytolysis, but it is unclear how these contrasting functional activities are regulated. Using lipid antigen–loaded CD1d tetramers, we have distinguished two subsets of CD1d-restricted T cells in fresh peripheral blood that differ in cytokine production and cytotoxic activation. One subset, which was CD4−, selectively produced the Th1 cytokines interferon γ and tumor necrosis factor α, and expressed NKG2d, a marker associated with cytolysis of microbially infected and neoplastic cells. This subset up-regulated perforin after exposure to interleukin (IL)-2 or IL-12. In contrast, CD4+ CD1d-restricted NKT cells potently produced both Th1 and Th2 cytokines, up-regulated perforin in response to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate and ionomycin but not IL-2 or IL-12, and could be induced to express CD95L. Further, for both CD1d-restricted NKT cell subsets, we found that antigenic stimulation induced cytokine production but not perforin expression, whereas exposure to inflammatory factors enhanced perforin expression but did not stimulate cytokine production. These results show that the various activities of CD1d-restricted T cells in tumor rejection, autoimmune disease, and microbial infections could result from activation of functionally distinct subsets, and that inflammatory and antigenic stimuli may influence different effector functions
Anomalous elastic softening of SmRu_{4}P_{12} under high pressure
The filled skutterudite compound SmRu_4P_{12} undergoes a complex evolution
from a paramagnetic metal (phase I) to a probable multipolar ordering insulator
(phase II) at T_{MI} = 16.5 K, then to a magnetically ordered phase (phase III)
at T_{N} = 14 K. Elastic properties under hydrostatic pressures were
investigated to study the nature of the ordering phases. We found that distinct
elastic softening above T_{MI} is induced by pressure, giving evidence of
quadrupole degeneracy of the ground state in the crystalline electric field. It
also suggests that quadrupole moment may be one of the order parameters below
T_{MI} under pressure. Strangely, the largest degree of softening is found in
the transverse elastic constant C_{T} at around 0.5-0.6 GPa, presumably having
relevancy to the competing and very different Gruneisen parameters \Omega of
T_{MI} and T_{N}. Interplay between the two phase transitions is also verified
by the rapid increase of T_{MI} under pressure with a considerably large \Omega
of 9. Our results can be understood on the basis of the proposed octupole
scenario for SmRu_4P_{12}.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
The Polonnaruwa meteorite: oxygen isotope, crystalline and biological composition
Results of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, Triple Oxygen Isotope analysis
and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) studies are presented for stone
fragments recovered from the North Central Province of Sri Lanka following a
witnessed fireball event on 29 December 2012. The existence of numerous
nitrogen depleted highly carbonaceous fossilized biological structures fused
into the rock matrix is inconsistent with recent terrestrial contamination.
Oxygen isotope results compare well with those of CI and CI-like chondrites but
are inconsistent with the fulgurite hypothesis.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 table
Three qubit entanglement within graphical Z/X-calculus
The compositional techniques of categorical quantum mechanics are applied to
analyse 3-qubit quantum entanglement. In particular the graphical calculus of
complementary observables and corresponding phases due to Duncan and one of the
authors is used to construct representative members of the two genuinely
tripartite SLOCC classes of 3-qubit entangled states, GHZ and W. This nicely
illustrates the respectively pairwise and global tripartite entanglement found
in the W- and GHZ-class states. A new concept of supplementarity allows us to
characterise inhabitants of the W class within the abstract diagrammatic
