A device to be used with an aircraft simulator to apply positive and negative g forces to the pilot's arm is described. An arm harness fits around the arm which the pilot uses to operate the throttle. The device allows the harness to track intentional arm movements without exerting any restraining forces, and at the same time, applies g forces to to the pilots arm which are recorded by the aircraft simulator computer

A history of biographical research in the United Kingdom

Biograpahical researchers in the United Kingdom have been influenced by symbolic interactionism, feminism, oral history, critical sociology, psychoanalysis and what we term an auto/biographical imagination. The latter involves reflexively situating the researcher and her influence, via power, unconscious processes and writing, into the text and by acknowledging the co-construction of stories. The focus of much research has been on marginalised peoples, as part of a democratising project to bring more diverse voices and stories into the historical or contemporary social record. It is important to avoid too rigid a distinction between mainland Europe and developments in Britain. Collaboration and dialogue have been extensive, across various research networks, including in the European Society for Research in the Education of Adults (ESREA)

Using Future Benefits to Set Conservation Priorities for Wetlands

In an era of rising sea levels, costal land managers including land trust representatives, municipal planners, and others contributing to decisions about whether to develop or protect coastal parcels do not have viable means of evaluating future values on wetlands that will be created when sea levels rise. This project develops and tests a software modeling approach to help address this issue, in combination with a novel, expert-opinion driven benefit-cost framework. The beta test used three parcels in Scarborough, Maine: Hampton Circle, Maine Audubon, and Pine Point. It used a group of experts to 1) allocate initial values to these parcels for a range of ecosystem services, using Wetland Benefit Units, and 2) create depth-benefit curves that estimate how those values would change with increasing water depth at each site. Experts estimated that the Hampton Circle site had the highest initial values across all services. But once sea level rise and topographic diversity was accounted for via use of the software (Marsh Adaptation Strategy Tool), what initially appeared to be the most valuable site became the least valuable. The analysis demonstrates the importance of being able to examine interactions among a diversity of ecosystem service values, local topography, and possible sea level rise, and demonstrates the utility of a new software tool and benefit-cost framework to support coastal land management decisions before and during upland conversion to wetland

The elements of wine and bread are ubiquitous in these novels and illuminate the spiritual hunger and renewal the characters experience. Along with the physical aspects of communion, the characters of Jake Barnes, Tom Joad, and Orleanna Price participate in and personify the process of communion through confession, conversion, and redemption. The rhetorical and stylistic structures of the novels allude to the rhetoric and style of the Bible. In doing so, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Barbara Kingsolver shape Biblical themes, in the form of communion, to treat the wounds of personal and social turmoil

Climate Ready Estuaries - COAST in Action: 2012 Projects from Maine and New Hampshire

In summer 2011 the US EPA’s Climate Ready Estuaries program awarded funds to the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership (CBEP) in Portland, Maine, and the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) in coastal New Hampshire, to further develop and use COAST (COastal Adaptation to Sea level rise Tool) in their sea level rise adaptation planning processes. The New England Environmental Finance Center worked with municipal staff, elected officials, and other stakeholders to select specific locations, vulnerable assets, and adaptation actions to model using COAST. The EFC then collected the appropriate base data layers, ran the COAST simulations, and provided visual, numeric, and presentation-based products in support of the planning processes underway in both locations. These products helped galvanize support for the adaptation planning efforts. Through facilitated meetings they also led to stakeholders identifying specific action steps and begin to determine how to implement them

The Effect of Transaction Size on Off-the-Run Treasury Prices

A price pressure effect is implied by segmentation in the market for a security. An empirical property of a segmented market is that the price of the security is sensitive to supply and demand conditions for that specific security, absent changes in risk and absent any new information. This paper examines intra-day trading data from the inter-dealer broker market for U.S. Treasury securities and finds that there is a price pressure effect in the off-the-run Treasury market. Thus, securities that would appear to be very close substitutes, i.e., on-the-run and off-the-run Treasury bonds, behave as if there is some degree of market segmentation. There have been several studies of price pressure in the equity market and Treasury bill market but this is the first study of the off-the-run Treasury note and bond market to investigate a price pressure effect using intra-day data. It is also the first study to analyze price pressure through matched pairs of securities that differ only in liquidity and with high frequency data.

RGGI Allowances: How to Use the Revenues?

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI, pronounced Reggie ) is the first regional mandatory program to address global warming pollution, from power plants in the United States. In December 2005, after two years of planning, the governors of seven states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Delaware)* signed a 20-page Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) adopting a plan for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2). A year later, the states released a draft model rule outlining regulations for participating state governments to use in RGGI\u27s adoption and implementation at the state level. RGGI will take effect in 2009, and mandate that total emissions in the RGGI states may not increase from 2009 to 2014, and then must fall by 2.5% per year through 2018
