Random quantum channels I: graphical calculus and the Bell state phenomenon

This paper is the first of a series where we study quantum channels from the random matrix point of view. We develop a graphical tool that allows us to compute the expected moments of the output of a random quantum channel. As an application, we study variations of random matrix models introduced by Hayden \cite{hayden}, and show that their eigenvalues converge almost surely. In particular we obtain for some models sharp improvements on the value of the largest eigenvalue, and this is shown in a further work to have new applications to minimal output entropy inequalities.Comment: Several typos were correcte

Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis

    Get PDF
The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes

The author has identified the following significant results. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (55 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery enlarged to 1:250,000 and 1:80,000. Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes from historical low altitude aerial photography spanning four decades

Chemically Accurate Calculations of Rate Constants of Spin Trap-Hydroxyl Radical Addition Reactions

    Get PDF
The DMPO type spin trap 5,5-Dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) and the exceptionally similar spin trap 2-ethoxycarbonyl-2-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-l-oxide (EMPO) are widely studied in computational and theoretical works. This particular study examines the addition reactions that both these molecules undergo with the carcinogenic hydroxyl radical. This work used a relatively new approximation method, called the correlation consistent composite approach or ccCA, for carrying out quantum mechanical calculations to give the free energies of the products and reactants of the reactions. The free energies are to be used to extrapolate the rate constants of the reactions from the Arrhenius equation. Though both the spin traps studied have been widely examined and assessed in both theoretical and experimental work, accurately calculated rate constants have not been previously obtained using computational methods. The results obtained here will help to assess the efficiency and the accuracy of the ccCA method, as well as lead to the design of better, more novel spin traps

Minimizing off-target herbicide movement using novel application technology

Drift is a point of contention with pesticide applications, causing the need to research application methods that provide consistent efficacy while minimizing off-target movement. Experiments were conducted to evaluate eight undiluted herbicides on invasive woody plants, Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) and Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), when applied individual plant treatment (IPT) via hack-and-squirt. Applications of undiluted aminocyclopyrachlor or imazapyr at 1 ml per 7.6 cm of tree diameter at breast height (DBH) made in the spring provided superior control over other herbicides or application timings. CamelBak® hydration reservoirs were evaluated for storage durability with eight undiluted herbicides. A third study was conducted to assess droplet size and distribution of Roadside Inc.’s new sprayer head for driftable fines. All nozzles were evaluated in a wind tunnel and produced droplet sizes above the benchmark for driftable fines (≤150 μm). The spray head also distributed droplets effectively from 2-30 feet from spray origin

    The Venona Progeny

In 1939, when the Soviet Union was an ally of nazi Germany, the u.S. Army began collecting copies of encrypted cables sent commercially to Moscow by the Soviet diplomatic missions in the U.S. No effort to decrypt the cables, thought to be diplomatic in nature, was made until 1943, when reports were recieved that Stalin, by then an ally of the United States, was negotiating a seperate peace treaty with Germany. At that time, the Army Signals Security Agency (SSA), an early predecessor of the National Security Agency (NSA), was oredered to establish a program eventually called Venona to decipher the cables

LANDSAT application of remote sensing to shoreline-form analysis

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT imagery of the southern end of Assateague Island, Virginia, was enlarged to 1:80,000 and compared with high altitude (1:130,000) and low altitude (1:24,000) aerial photography in an attempt to quantify change in land area over a nine month period. Change in area and configuration was found with LANDSAT and low altitude photography. Change in configuration, but no change in area was found with high altitude photography. Due to tidal differences at time of image obtention and lack of baseline data, the accuracy of the LANDSAT measurements could not be determined. They were consistent with the measurements from the low altitude photography
