Skywalking GEMS and UDF
The two large colour mosaics of the GEMS and UDF projects, both obtained with
the Hubble Space Telescope and ACS, consist of large amounts of data. We
present two web application pages (the GEMS and UDF "Skywalker") that allow to
pan around in these mosaics with downloading only small parts at a time.Comment: 1 pag
Breathers in FPU systems, near and far from the phonon band
There exists a recent mathematical proof on the existence of small amplitude
breathers in FPU systems near the phonon band, which includes a prediction of
their amplitude and width. In this work we obtain numerically these breathers,
and calculate the range of validity of the predictions, which extends
relatively far from the phonon band. There exist also large amplitude breathers
with the same frequency, with the consequence that there is an energy gap for

The Stellar Mass Fundamental Plane: The virial relation and a very thin plane for slow-rotators
Early-type galaxies -- slow and fast rotating ellipticals (E-SRs and E-FRs)
and S0s/lenticulars -- define a Fundamental Plane (FP) in the space of
half-light radius , enclosed surface brightness and velocity
dispersion . Since and are distance-independent
measurements, the thickness of the FP is often expressed in terms of the
accuracy with which and can be used to estimate sizes .
We show that: 1) The thickness of the FP depends strongly on morphology. If the
sample only includes E-SRs, then the observed scatter in is ,
of which only is intrinsic. Removing galaxies with
further reduces the observed scatter to ( intrinsic). The observed scatter increases to the usually
quoted in the literature if E-FRs and S0s are added. If the FP is defined using
the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix of the observables, then the E-SRs
again define an exceptionally thin FP, with intrinsic scatter of only
orthogonal to the plane. 2) The structure within the FP is most easily
understood as arising from the fact that and are nearly
independent, whereas the and correlations are nearly
equal and opposite. 3) If the coefficients of the FP differ from those
associated with the virial theorem the plane is said to be `tilted'. If we
multiply by the global stellar mass-to-light ratio and we account
for non-homology across the population by using S\'ersic photometry, then the
resulting stellar mass FP is less tilted. Accounting self-consistently for
gradients will change the tilt. The tilt we currently see suggests that
the efficiency of turning baryons into stars increases and/or the dark matter

PPAK Wide-field Integral Field Spectroscopy of NGC 628: I. The largest spectroscopic mosaic on a single galaxy
We present a wide-field IFS survey on the nearby face-on Sbc galaxy NGC 628,
comprising 11094 individual spectra, covering a nearly circular field-of-view
of ~6 arcmin in diameter, with a sampling of ~2.7 arcsec per spectrum in the
optical wavelength range (3700--7000 AA). This galaxy is part of the PPAK IFS
Nearby Galaxies Survey, (PINGS, Rosales-Ortega et al. 2009). To our knowledge,
this is the widest spectroscopic survey ever made in a single nearby galaxy. A
detailed flux calibration was applied, granting a spectrophotometric accuracy
of \,0.2 mag.
The age of the stellar populations shows a negative gradient from the inner
(older) to the outer (younger) regions. We found an inversion of this gradient
in the central ~1 kpc region, where a somewhat younger stellar population is
present within a ring at this radius. This structure is associated with a
circumnuclear star-forming region at ~ 500 pc, also found in similar spiral
galaxies. From the study of the integrated and spatially resolved ionized gas
we found a moderate SFR of ~ 2.4 Msun yr. The oxygen abundance shows a a
clear gradient of higher metallicity values from the inner part to the outer
part of the galaxy, with a mean value of 12~+~log(O/H) ~ 8.7. At some specific
regions of the galaxy, the spatially resolved distribution of the physical
properties show some level of structure, suggesting real point-to-point
variations within an individual \hh region. Our results are consistent with an
inside-out growth scheme, with stronger star formation at the outer regions,

Current profiles and AC losses of a superconducting strip with elliptic cross-section in perpendicular magnetic field
The case of a hard type II superconductor in the form of strip with elliptic
cross-section when placed in transverse magnetic field is studied. We approach
the problem in two steps, both based on the critical-state model. First we
calculate numerically the penetrated current profiles that ensure complete
shielding in the interior, without assuming an a priori form for the profiles.
In the second step we introduce an analytical approximation that asumes that
the current profiles are ellipses. Expressions linking the sample magnetization
to the applied field are derived covering the whole range of applied fields.
The theoretical predictions are tested by the comparison with experimental data
for the imaginary part of AC susceptibility.Comment: 12 pages; 3 figure
Overbite as an Etiological Factor of TMJ Disorders. Clinical and Electromyographic Exploration
INTRODUCTION: The intermaxillar relationship in overbite is one of the etiological factors of TMJ disorders (Pulinger, Sellingman and Gorbeirn, 1993). Nevertheless, it does not always cause malfunction. Sometimes the compensating mechanisms of the individual prevent the occurrence of symptoms and it only appears when parafunctional habit overloads the stomatognathic apparatus.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to escamine neuromuscular behaviour in patients with such occlusal alteration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present two cases with overbite: one bruxist with malfunction and one nonbruxist without symptoms of malfunction. An occlusal analysis and clinical, kinesiographic and
electromyographic exploration was performed in both patients. For the analysis we used a Dentatus A.R.L. articulator,
Myotronics electromyograph and K6 kinesiograph.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results of the exploration were compared with those of a healthy individual with normal occlusion, used as a reference. Lateral movements were restricted and with a mainly vertical component. In both cases there was an increase in electromyographic activity during normal mastication and swallowing, and in maximum force bite there was the same response between
anterior temporalis and masseter muscles. The study demonstrated that the mandibular movements in both patients were very similar, and determined by the occlusal factor, in comparison to normal individuals. Nevertheless, the electromyographic exploration shows
a different neuromuscular response by the patient adapted to this occlusal problem and the dysfunctional patient
