Structured Dropout for Weak Label and Multi-Instance Learning and Its Application to Score-Informed Source Separation
Many success stories involving deep neural networks are instances of
supervised learning, where available labels power gradient-based learning
methods. Creating such labels, however, can be expensive and thus there is
increasing interest in weak labels which only provide coarse information, with
uncertainty regarding time, location or value. Using such labels often leads to
considerable challenges for the learning process. Current methods for
weak-label training often employ standard supervised approaches that
additionally reassign or prune labels during the learning process. The
information gain, however, is often limited as only the importance of labels
where the network already yields reasonable results is boosted. We propose
treating weak-label training as an unsupervised problem and use the labels to
guide the representation learning to induce structure. To this end, we propose
two autoencoder extensions: class activity penalties and structured dropout. We
demonstrate the capabilities of our approach in the context of score-informed
source separation of music
Shift-Invariant Kernel Additive Modelling for Audio Source Separation
A major goal in blind source separation to identify and separate sources is
to model their inherent characteristics. While most state-of-the-art approaches
are supervised methods trained on large datasets, interest in non-data-driven
approaches such as Kernel Additive Modelling (KAM) remains high due to their
interpretability and adaptability. KAM performs the separation of a given
source applying robust statistics on the time-frequency bins selected by a
source-specific kernel function, commonly the K-NN function. This choice
assumes that the source of interest repeats in both time and frequency. In
practice, this assumption does not always hold. Therefore, we introduce a
shift-invariant kernel function capable of identifying similar spectral content
even under frequency shifts. This way, we can considerably increase the amount
of suitable sound material available to the robust statistics. While this leads
to an increase in separation performance, a basic formulation, however, is
computationally expensive. Therefore, we additionally present acceleration
techniques that lower the overall computational complexity.Comment: Feedback is welcom

Sensation Seeking and Perceived Need for Structure Moderate Soldiers’ Well-Being Before and After Operational Deployment
This study examined associations between sensation seeking and perceived need for structure, and changes in reported well-being among deployed soldiers. Participants (n = 167) were assessed before and after a six-month deployment to south Afghanistan. Results indicated that although well-being declined in the soldier sample as a whole following deployment, the degree of decrease was significantly different among soldiers with different personality profiles. Differences were moderated by soldiers’ level of sensation seeking and perceived need for structure. Results are discussed in terms of a person-environment fit theory in the context of preparation and rehabilitation of deployed military personnel
Contesting authentic practice and ethical authority in adventure tourism
This paper examines the discourses of authenticity and ethics used among adventure tourists regarding the use of the natural environment. In one case, full-time traveling rock climbers use their dedication to the sport and annual visits to the Red River Gorge as evidence for their authoritative voice on ethical climbing practice. While they identify the growing numbers of leisure climbers as a problem for sustainability, many also take up temporary employment as guides and are directly involved in the introduction of new climbers to the area. In another case, two groups of wilderness enthusiasts – “ADK 46ers” and “Summit Stewards” – lament the environmental and social impacts of other recreational users in the Adirondack Park. Despite being visitors themselves, Summit Stewards and 46ers use their sense of place and knowledge of Adirondack history and ecology to substantiate their authority as purveyors of ethical practice. In both cases, senses of responsibility are inspired by senses of place, but are articulated through notions of authenticity and used as justification for ethical authority. While validating their presence in these outdoor spaces, the use of such rhetoric also minimizes their own impacts yielding further tensions among user groups

Building a taxonomy of integrated palliative care initiatives: Results from a focus group
Background Empirical evidence suggests that integrated palliative care (IPC) increases the quality of care for palliative patients and supports professional caregivers. Existing IPC initiatives in Europe vary in their design and are hardly comparable. InSuP-C, a European Union research project, aimed to build a taxonomy of IPC initiatives applicable across diseases, healthcare sectors and systems. Methods The taxonomy of IPC initiatives was developed in cooperation with an international and multidisciplinary focus group of 18 experts. Subsequently, a consensus meeting of 10 experts revised a preliminary taxonomy and adopted the final classification system. Results Consisting of eight categories, with two to four items each, the taxonomy covers the process and structure of IPC initiatives. If two items in at least one category apply to an initiative, a minimum level of integration is assumed to have been reached. Categories range from the type of initiative (items: Pathway, model or guideline) to patients' key contact (items: Nonpc specialist, pc specialist, general practitioner). Experts recommended the inclusion of two new categories: Level of care (items: Primary, secondary or tertiary) indicating at which stage palliative care is integrated and primary focus of intervention describing IPC givers' different roles (items: Treating function, advising/consulting or training) in the care process. Conclusions Empirical studies are required to investigate how the taxonomy is used in practice and whether it covers the reality of patients in need of palliative care. The InSuP-C project will test this taxonomy empirically in selected initiatives using IPC
