Investigation of critical slowing down in a bistable S-SEED
A simulation of S-SEED switching based upon experimental data is developed that includes the effect of critical slowing down. The simulation's accuracy is demonstrated by close agreement with the results from experimental S-SEED switching. The simulation is subsequently used to understand how the phenomenon of critical slowing down applies to switching of an S-SEED and how the effect on photonic analog-to-digital (A/D) converter performance may be minimized.B. We further investigate the case where new physics in the form of a massive
particle explains apparent measurements of lepton flavour
non-universality in decays. Hadron collider
sensitivities for direct production of such s have been previously
studied in the narrow width limit for a final state. Here, we
extend the analysis to sizeable decay widths and improve the sensitivity
estimate for the narrow width case. We estimate the sensitivities of the high
luminosity 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), a high energy 27 TeV LHC
(HE-LHC), as well as a potential 100 TeV future circular collider (FCC). The
HL-LHC has sensitivity to narrow resonances consistent with the
anomalies. In one of our simplified models the FCC could probe 23 TeV
particles with widths of up to 0.35 of their mass at 95\% confidence
level (CL). In another model, the HL-LHC and HE-LHC cover sizeable portions of
parameter space, but the whole of perturbative parameter space can be covered

Modeling of radiation damage in silicon solar cells
One MeV electron irradiation produces preponderantly isolated vacancy interstitial pairs. If neither of these defects is mobile, the concentration of each grows linearly with fluence. Annealing of damage depends on the nature of the damage. Vacancy interstitial pairs which are bound by an interaction such that they mutually annihilate rather than dissociate are termed close pairs; close pair recovery usually occurs at a lower temperature than the temperature at which long distance defect migration occurs. Annealing of the remaining frozen in damage occurs when a temperature is reached where the vacancy or interstitial is mobile; usually the interstitial is more mobile than the vacancy. The recovery occurs in two regimes which may be resoluable
Chameleon f(R) gravity on the Virgo cluster scale
Models of modified gravity offer promising alternatives to the concordance Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology to explain the late-time acceleration of the universe. A popular such model is f(R) gravity, in which the Ricci scalar in the Einstein-Hilbert action is replaced by a general function of it. We study the f(R) model of Hu & Sawicki, which recovers standard general relativity in high-density regimes, while reproducing the desired late time acceleration at cosmological scales. We run a suite of high-resolution zoom simulations using the ecosmog code to examine the effect of f(R) gravity on the properties of a halo that is analogous to the Virgo cluster. We show that the velocity dispersion profiles can potentially discriminate between f(R) models and ΛCDM, and provide complementary analysis of lensing signal profiles to explore the possibility to further distinguish the different f(R) models. Our results confirm the techniques explored by Cabré etal. to quantify the effect of environment in the behaviour of f(R) gravity, and we extend them to study halo satellites at various redshifts. We find that the modified gravity effects in our models are most observable at low redshifts, and that effects are generally stronger for satellites far from the centre of the main halo. We show that the screening properties of halo satellites trace very well that of dark matter particles, which means that low-resolution simulations in which subhaloes are not very well resolved can in principle be used to study satellite properties. We discuss observables, particularly for halo satellites, that can potentially be used to constrain the observational viability of f(R) gravit
The Drosophila genome nexus: a population genomic resource of 623 Drosophila melanogaster genomes, including 197 from a single ancestral range population.
Hundreds of wild-derived Drosophila melanogaster genomes have been published, but rigorous comparisons across data sets are precluded by differences in alignment methodology. The most common approach to reference-based genome assembly is a single round of alignment followed by quality filtering and variant detection. We evaluated variations and extensions of this approach and settled on an assembly strategy that utilizes two alignment programs and incorporates both substitutions and short indels to construct an updated reference for a second round of mapping prior to final variant detection. Utilizing this approach, we reassembled published D. melanogaster population genomic data sets and added unpublished genomes from several sub-Saharan populations. Most notably, we present aligned data from phase 3 of the Drosophila Population Genomics Project (DPGP3), which provides 197 genomes from a single ancestral range population of D. melanogaster (from Zambia). The large sample size, high genetic diversity, and potentially simpler demographic history of the DPGP3 sample will make this a highly valuable resource for fundamental population genetic research. The complete set of assemblies described here, termed the Drosophila Genome Nexus, presently comprises 623 consistently aligned genomes and is publicly available in multiple formats with supporting documentation and bioinformatic tools. This resource will greatly facilitate population genomic analysis in this model species by reducing the methodological differences between data sets

adjacent State land, on the Namaqualand (west) coast of South Africa. Of the 14 samples sectioned
only 5 were well enough preserved to describe and identify to species level. The woods are
podocarpaceous and have been assigned to the taxa Podocarpoxylon cf. umzambense,
Mesembrioxylon woburnense, M. stokesi and Mesembrioxylon sp. The samples are Lower
Cretaceous in age and were most probably reworked a number of times into successively younger
palaeoshoreline deposits. The same species occurred in the offshore sediments, therefore
indicating a wider area of "woodland" and further evidence of extensive shelf erosion by
subsequent marine transgressions and regressions.Non
