In an innovative inverse-problem construction the measured, experimental
energies , , ... of a quantum bound-state system are assumed
fitted by an N-plet of zeros of a classical orthogonal polynomial . We
reconstruct the underlying Hamiltonian (in the most elementary
nearest-neighbor-interaction form) and the underlying Hilbert space
of states (the rich menu of non-equivalent inner products is offered). The
Gegenbauer's ultraspherical polynomials are chosen for

Optimizing global health experiences in emergency medicine residency programs: A consensus statement from the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors 2011 Academic Assembly global health specialty track
BACKGROUND: An increasing number of emergency medicine (EM) residency training programs have residents interested in participating in clinical rotations in other countries. However, the policies that each individual training program applies to this process are different. To our knowledge, little has been done in the standardization of these experiences to help EM residency programs with the evaluation, administration and implementation of a successful global health clinical elective experience. The objective of this project was to assess the current status of EM global health electives at residency training programs and to establish recommendations from educators in EM on the best methodology to implement successful global health electives. METHODS: During the 2011 Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) Academic Assembly, participants met to address this issue in a mediated discussion session and working group. Session participants examined data previously obtained via the CORD online listserve, discussed best practices in global health applications, evaluations and partnerships, and explored possible solutions to some of the challenges. In addition a survey was sent to CORD members prior to the 2011 Academic Assembly to evaluate the resources and processes for EM residents’ global experiences. RESULTS: Recommendations included creating a global health working group within the organization, optimizing a clearinghouse of elective opportunities for residents and standardizing elective application materials, site evaluations and resident assessment/feedback methods. The survey showed that 71.4% of respondents have global health partnerships and electives. However, only 36.7% of programs require pre-departure training, and only 20% have formal competency requirements for these global health electives. CONCLUSIONS: A large number of EM training programs have global health experiences available, but these electives and the trainees may benefit from additional institutional support and formalized structure
X-ray diffraction measurements of the c-axis Debye-Waller factors of YBa2Cu3O7 and HgBa2CaCu2O6
We report the first application of x-rays to the measurement of the
temperature dependent Bragg peak intensities to obtain Debye-Waller factors on
high-temperature superconductors. Intensities of (0,0,l) peaks of YBa2Cu3O7 and
HgBa2CaCu2O6 thin films are measured to obtain the c-axis Debye-Waller factors.
While lattice constant and some Debye-Waller factor measurements on high Tc
superconductors show anomalies at the transition temperature, our measurements
by x-ray diffraction show a smooth transition of the c-axis Debye-Waller
factors through T. This suggests that the dynamic displacements of the
heavy elements along the c-axis direction in these compounds do not have
anomalies at Tc. This method in combination with measurements by other

Observational Limits on Machos in the Galactic Halo
We present final results from the first phase of the EROS search for
gravitational microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds by unseen
deflectors (machos: MAssive Compact Halo Objects). The search is sensitive to
events with time scales between 15 minutes and 200 days corresponding to
deflector masses in the range 1.e-7 to a few solar masses. Two events were
observed that are compatible with microlensing by objects of mass of about 0.1
Mo. By comparing the results with the expected number of events for various
models of the Galaxy, we conclude that machos in the mass range [1.e-7, 0.02]
Mo make up less than 20% (95% C.L.) of the Halo dark matter.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Postscript figures, to be published in Astronomy &

PT-symetrically regularized Eckart,Poeschl-Teller and Hulthen potentials
Version 1: The well known Eckart's singular s-wave potential is
PT-symmetrically regularized and continued to the whole real line. The new
model remains exactly solvable and its bound states remain proportional to
Jacobi polynomials. Its real and discrete spectrum exhibits several unusual
features.
Version 2: Parity times time-reversal symmetry of complex Hamiltonians with
real spectra is usually interpreted as a weaker mathematical substitute for
Hermiticity. Perhaps an equally important role is played by the related
strengthened analyticity assumptions. In a constructive illustration we
complexify a few potentials solvable only in s-wave. Then we continue their
domain from semi-axis to the whole axis and get the new exactly solvable
models. Their energies come out real as expected. The new one-dimensional
spectra themselves differ quite significantly from their s-wave predecessors.Comment: Original 10-page letter ``PT-symmetrized exact solution of the

Adaptive Mesh Refinement for Characteristic Grids
I consider techniques for Berger-Oliger adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) when
numerically solving partial differential equations with wave-like solutions,
using characteristic (double-null) grids. Such AMR algorithms are naturally
recursive, and the best-known past Berger-Oliger characteristic AMR algorithm,
that of Pretorius & Lehner (J. Comp. Phys. 198 (2004), 10), recurses on
individual "diamond" characteristic grid cells. This leads to the use of
fine-grained memory management, with individual grid cells kept in
2-dimensional linked lists at each refinement level. This complicates the
implementation and adds overhead in both space and time.
Here I describe a Berger-Oliger characteristic AMR algorithm which instead
recurses on null \emph{slices}. This algorithm is very similar to the usual
Cauchy Berger-Oliger algorithm, and uses relatively coarse-grained memory
management, allowing entire null slices to be stored in contiguous arrays in
memory. The algorithm is very efficient in both space and time.
I describe discretizations yielding both 2nd and 4th order global accuracy.
My code implementing the algorithm described here is included in the electronic
supplementary materials accompanying this paper, and is freely available to

Grain boundary effects on magnetotransport in bi-epitaxial films of LaSrMnO
The low field magnetotransport of LaSrMnO (LSMO) films
grown on SrTiO substrates has been investigated. A high qualtity LSMO film
exhibits anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and a peak in the
magnetoresistance close to the Curie temperature of LSMO. Bi-epitaxial films
prepared using a seed layer of MgO and a buffer layer of CeO display a
resistance dominated by grain boundaries. One film was prepared with seed and
buffer layers intact, while a second sample was prepared as a 2D square array
of grain boundaries. These films exhibit i) a low temperature tail in the low
field magnetoresistance; ii) a magnetoconductance with a constant high field
slope; and iii) a comparably large AMR effect. A model based on a two-step
tunneling process, including spin-flip tunneling, is discussed and shown to be
consistent with the experimental findings of the bi-epitaxial films.Comment: REVTeX style; 14 pages, 9 figures. Figure 1 included in jpeg format

Combined Analysis of the Binary-Lens Caustic-Crossing Event MACHO 98-SMC-1
We fit the data for the binary-lens microlensing event MACHO 98-SMC-1 from 5
different microlensing collaborations and find two distinct solutions
characterized by binary separation d and mass ratio q: (d,q)=(0.54,0.50) and
(d,q)=(3.65,0.36), where d is in units of the Einstein radius. However, the
relative proper motion of the lens is very similar in the two solutions, 1.30
km/s/kpc and 1.48 km/s/kpc, thus confirming that the lens is in the Small
Magellanic Cloud. The close binary can be either rotating or approximately
static but the wide binary must be rotating at close its maximum allowed rate
to be consistent with all the data. We measure limb-darkening coefficients for
five bands ranging from I to V. As expected, these progressively decrease with
rising wavelength. This is the first measurement of limb darkening for a
