    Vibration and noise characteristics of hook type olive harvesters

    The objective of this study was to obtain and evaluate the vibration and noise characteristics of portable hook type mechanical olive harvesters. Experiments included five hook type olive harvesters. In this study, the vibration and sound pressure levels of different harvesters were measured at idling and full load condition. The vibration levels on the handle grip of harvesters were measured and analyzed for both operator’s right and left hand, respectively. The sound pressure level was measured at ear level of the operator. The frequency weighting acceleration was calculated. The vibration total value was expressed as the root-mean-square (rms) of three component values. The acceleration values vary between 5.52 and 39.15 ms-2 for right hand and 4.18 and 61.01 ms-2 for left hand. The equivalent noise pressure levels of the harvesters were measured between 91 and 103 dB (A) in the full loading conditions and between 67 and 80 dB (A) idling working conditions.Key words: Olive harvester, vibration, noise, ha

    Quantum darwinism in a composite system: Objectivity versus classicality

    We investigate the implications of quantum Darwinism in a composite quantum system with interacting constituents exhibiting a decoherence-free subspace. We consider a two-qubit system coupled to an N-qubit environment via a dephasing interaction. For excitation preserving interactions between the system qubits, an analytical expression for the dynamics is obtained. It demonstrates that part of the system Hilbert space redundantly proliferates its information to the environment, while the remaining subspace is decoupled and preserves clear non-classical signatures. For measurements performed on the system, we establish that a non-zero quantum discord is shared between the composite system and the environment, thus violating the conditions of strong Darwinism. However, due to the asymmetry of quantum discord, the information shared with the environment is completely classical for measurements performed on the environment. Our results imply a dichotomy between objectivity and classicality that emerges when considering composite systems

    On the role of initial coherence in the spin phase-space entropy production rate

    Recent studies have pointed out the intrinsic dependence of figures of merit of thermodynamic relevance—such as work, heat and entropy production—on the amount of quantum coherences that is made available to a system. However, whether coherences hinder or enhance the value taken by such quantifiers of thermodynamic performance is yet to be ascertained. We show that, when considering entropy production generated in a process taking a finite-size bipartite quantum system out of equilibrium through local non-unitary channels, no general monotonicity relationship exists between the entropy production and degree of quantum coherence in the state of the system. A direct correspondence between such quantities can be retrieved when considering specific forms of open-system dynamics applied to suitably chosen initial states. Our results call for a systematic study of the role of genuine quantum features in the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum processes

    Multiple QTL-effects of wheat Gpc-B1 locus on grain protein and micronutrient concentrations

    Micronutrient malnutrition afflicts over three billion peopleworldwide and the numbers are continuously increasing. Developing genetically micronutrientenriched cereals, which are the predominant source of human dietary, is essential to alleviate malnutrition worldwide. Wheat chromosome 6B derived from wild emmerwheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Körn.) Thell] was previously reported to be a source for high Zn concentration in the grain. In the present study, recombinant chromosome substitution lines (RSLs), previously constructed for genetic and physical maps of Gpc-B1 (a 250-kb locus affecting grain protein concentration), were used to identify the effects of the Gpc-B1 locus on grain micronutrient concentrations. RSLs carrying the Gpc-B1 allele of T. dicoccoides accumulated on average 12% higher concentration of Zn, 18% higher concentration of Fe, 29% higher concentration of Mn and 38% higher concentration of protein in the grain as compared with RSLs carrying the allele from cultivated wheat (Triticum durum). Furthermore, the high grain Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations were consistently expressed in five different environments with an absence of genotype by environment interaction. The results obtained in the present study also confirmed the previously reported effect of the wild-type allele of Gpc-B1 on earlier senescence of flag leaves. We suggest that the Gpc-B1 locus is involved in more efficient remobilization of protein, zinc, iron and manganese from leaves to the grains, in addition to its effect on earlier senescence of the green tissues

    Multi-elemental speciation analysis of barley genotypes diering in tolerance to cadmium toxicity using SEC-ICP-MS and ESI-TOF-MS

    Plants respond to Cd exposure by synthesizing heavy-metal-binding oligopeptides, called phytochelatins (PCs). These peptides reduce the activity of Cd2+ ions in the plant tissues by forming Cd chelates. The main objective of the present work was to develop an analytical technique, which allowed identication of the most prominent Cd species in plant tissue by SEC-ICP-MS and ESI-TOF-MS. An integrated part of the method development was to test the hypothesis that dierential Cd tolerance between two barley genotypes was linked to dierences in Cd speciation. Only one fraction of Cd species, ranging from 7001800 Da, was detected in the shoots of both genotypes. In the roots, two additional fractions ranging from 29004600 and 670015 000 Da were found. The Cd-rich SEC fractions were heart-cut, de-salted and demetallized using reversed-phase chromatography (RPC), followed by ESI-MS-TOF to identify the ligands. Three dierent families of PCs, viz. (gGlu-Cys)n-Gly (PCn), (gGlu-Cys)n-Ser (iso-PCn) and Cys-(gGlu-Cys)n-Gly (des-gGlu-PCn), the last lacking the N-terminal amino acid, were identied. The PCs induced by Cd toxicity also bound several essential trace elements in plants, including Zn, Cu, and Ni, whereas no Mn species were detected. Zn, Cu and Ni-species were distributed between the 7001800 Da and 670015 000 Da fractions, whereas only Cd species were found in the 29004600 Da fraction dominated by PC3 ligands. Although the total tissue concentration of Cd was similar for the two species, the tolerant barley genotype synthesized signicantly more CdPC3 species with a high Cd specicity than the intolerant genotype, clearly indicating a correlation between Cd tolerance and the CdPC speciation

    Air Pollution and Mortality in Chile: Susceptibility among the Elderly

    OBJECTIVE: The estimated mortality rate associated with ambient air pollution based on general population studies may not be representative of the effects on certain subgroups. The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of relatively high concentrations of air pollution on mortality in a general population sample and in the very elderly. STUDY DESIGN: Daily time-series analyses tested the association between daily air pollution and daily mortality in seven Chilean urban centers during 1997–2003. Results were adjusted for day of the week and humidex. RESULTS: Daily averaged particulate matter with aerodynamic matter < 10 μm (PM(10)) was 84.88 μg/m(3), sulfur dioxide was 14.08ppb, and carbon monoxide was 1.29 ppb. The 1-hr maximum ozone was 100.13 ppb. The percentage increases in nonaccidental mortality associated with an increase in PM(10) equivalent to its mean were 4.53 (t-ratio 1.52) for those < 65 years and 14.03 (3.87) for those > 85 years. Respective values were 4.96 (1.17) and 8.56 (2.02) for O(3); 4.77 (2.50) and 7.92 (3.23) for SO(2); and 4.10 (2.52) and 8.58 (4.45) for CO. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the very elderly are particularly susceptible to dying from air pollution. Concentrations deemed acceptable for the general population may not adequately protect the very elderly

    Asymmetric Fabry-Perot-type transmission in photonic-crystal gratings with one-sided corrugations at a two-way coupling

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Strongly asymmetric Fabry-Perot-type transmission arising at the two-way coupling has been studied in the case of normal incidence for slabs of two-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) with one-sided corrugations that are made of linear isotropic materials. Comparing to the scenario of unidirectional transmission known for the structures with broken spatial inversion symmetry that requires zero order being uncoupled, in the studied mechanism zero order is either the sole order or one of the orders that may be coupled to a Floquet-Bloch mode. Contrary to the earlier studies of asymmetric transmission at the coupled zero order, structures with nondeep corrugations are considered, which allow one to combine Fabry-Perot-type total-transmission maxima with diffractions in a desired way. At a proper choice of PC lattice and corrugation parameters, higher orders can dominate in Fabry-Perot-type transmission at the noncorrugated-side illumination and also at the total-transmission maxima, whereas only zero order contributes to the transmission at the corrugated-side illumination. As a result, strong asymmetry can be obtained without uncoupling of zero order but it invokes the unidirectional contribution of higher orders. The presented results show that the entire structure can be approximately decomposed into the two independent, regular and grating (nonregular), parts whose contributions to the transmission are additive. Multiple asymmetric transmission maxima can coexist with a rather high equivalent group index of refraction. Possible applications of the studied transmission mechanism are discussed

    Structural, morphological, and optical properties of AlGaN/GaN heterostructures with AlN buffer and interlayer

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.AlxGa1-xN/GaN (x similar to 0.3) heterostructures with and without a high-temperature (HT) AlN interlayer (IL) have been grown on sapphire (Al2O3) substrates and AlN buffer/Al2O3 templates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The effects of an AlN buffer layer (BL) grown on an Al2O3 substrate and an AlN IL grown under the AlGaN ternary layer (TL) on structural, morphological, and optical properties of the heterostructures have been investigated by high-resolution x-ray diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. The AlN BL improves the crystal quality of the AlGaN TL. Further improvement is achieved by inserting an AlN IL between GaN BL and AlGaN TL. However, experimental results also show that a HT AlN IL leads to relatively rough surfaces on AlGaN TLs, and an AlN IL changes the strain in the AlGaN TL from tensile to compressive type. In addition, an AlN BL improves the top surface quality of heterostructures. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics

    Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth and thermal stability of the AllNN/GaN high electron mobility transistor structure

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.The AlxIn1-xN barrier high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structure has been optimized with varied barrier composition and thickness grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. After optimization, a transistor structure comprising a 7 nm thick nearly lattice-matched Al0.83In0.17 N barrier exhibits a sheet electron density of 2.0 x 10(13) cm(-2) with a high electron mobility of 1540 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). AnAl(0.83)In(0.17)N barrier HEMT device with 1 mu m gate length provides a current density of 1.0 A mm(-1) at V-GS = 0 V and an extrinsic transconductance of 242 mS mm(-1), which are remarkably improved compared to that of a conventional Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier HEMT. To investigate the thermal stability of the HEMT epi-structures, post-growth annealing experiments up to 800 degrees C have been applied to Al0.83In0.17N and Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier heterostructures. As expected, the electrical properties of an Al0.83In0.17N barrier HEMT structure showed less stability than that of an Al0.3Ga0.7N barrier HEMT to the thermal annealing. The structural properties of Al0.83In0.17N/GaN also showed more evidence for decomposition than that of the Al0.3Ga0.7N/GaN structure after 800 degrees C post-annealing
