On subsets of S^n whose (n + 1)-point subsets are contained in open hemispheres

We investigate the nature of subsets of spheres which satisfy a tameness condition associated with the Bieri–Groves FPm-conjecture. We find that there is a natural polyhedrality in the case of n-tame subsets of an (n − 1)-sphere. In the case n = 3 we establish a strong polyhedrality condition for certain maximal open 3-tame sets. Many examples are included

Riding the Yield Curve: Diversification of Strategies

    Get PDF
Riding the yield curve, the fixed-income strategy of purchasing a longer-dated security and selling before maturity, has long been a popular means to achieve excess returns compared to buying-and-holding, despite its implicit violations of market efficiency and the pure expectations hypothesis of the term structure. This paper looks at the historic excess returns of different strategies across three countries and proposes several statistical and macro-based trading rules which seem to enhance returns even more. While riding based on the Taylor Rule works well even for longer investment horizons, our empirical results indicate that, using expectations implied by Fed funds futures, excess returns can only be increased over short horizons. Furthermore, we demonstrate that duration-neutral strategies are superior to standard riding on a risk- adjusted basis. Overall, our evidence stands in contrast to the pure expectations hypothesis and points to the existence of risk premia which may be exploited consistently.Term Structure, Interest Rates, Market Efficiency, Taylor Rule

SU(2) approach to the pseudogap phase of high-temperature superconductors: electronic spectral functions

We use an SU(2) mean-field theory approach with input from variational wavefunctions of the t-J model to study the electronic spectra in the pseudogap phase of cuprates. In our model, the high-temperature state of underdoped cuprates is realized by classical fluctuations of the order parameter between the d-wave superconductor and the staggered-flux state. Spectral functions of the intermediate and the averaged states are computed and analyzed. Our model predicts a photoemission spectrum with an asymmetric gap structure interpolating between the superconducting gap centered at the Fermi energy and the asymmetric staggered-flux gap. This asymmetry of the gap changes sign at the point where the Fermi surface crosses the diagonal (\pi,0)-(0,\pi).Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures; estimate of applicable temperature range corrected and refs. added, ref. to ARPES paper added; minor changes to published versio

Hydrocarbons identified in extracts from estuarine water accommodated no. 2 fuel oil by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Results are presented on a computerized gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis of methylene chloride and n-heptane extracts of a No. 2 fuel oil accommodated estuarine water sample. The analytical method is briefly described, and the limitations on the identifications are categorized. Some attempt was made to determine major and trace constituents in the water accommodate. Altogether 66 hydrocarbon compounds were identified specifically, and 75 compounds were partially identified. Seven compounds could be recognized as major constituents of the water accommodated oil and ten were present only as traces. The aromatic compounds found were alkyl benzenes, naphthalene, tetralin, indane, biphenyl, fluorene, anthracene, and some of their alkyl substituted isomers in the range of carbon numbers C7 to C15. Four n-alkanes, C10 to C13, were found along with four other assorted hydrocarbons

    Haydeeite: a spin-1/2 kagome ferromagnet

The mineral haydeeite, alpha-MgCu3(OD)6Cl2, is a S=1/2 kagome ferromagnet that displays long-range magnetic order below TC=4.2 K with a strongly reduced moment. Our inelastic neutron scattering data show clear spin-wave excitations that are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1=-38 K and antiferromagnetic exchange Jd=+11 K across the hexagons of the kagome lattice. These values place haydeeite very close to the quantum phase transition between ferromagnetic order and non-coplanar twelve-sublattice cuboc2 antiferromagnetic order. Diffuse dynamic short-range ferromagnetic correlations observed above TC persist well into the ferromagnetically ordered phase with a behavior distinct from critical scattering

    Computing Tropical Varieties

The tropical variety of a dd-dimensional prime ideal in a polynomial ring with complex coefficients is a pure dd-dimensional polyhedral fan. This fan is shown to be connected in codimension one. We present algorithmic tools for computing the tropical variety, and we discuss our implementation of these tools in the Gr\"obner fan software \texttt{Gfan}. Every ideal is shown to have a finite tropical basis, and a sharp lower bound is given for the size of a tropical basis for an ideal of linear forms.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure

Positive Cross Correlations in a Normal-Conducting Fermionic Beam Splitter

We investigate a beam splitter experiment implemented in a normal conducting fermionic electron gas in the quantum Hall regime. The cross-correlations between the current fluctuations in the two exit leads of the three terminal device are found to be negative, zero or even positive depending on the scattering mechanism within the device. Reversal of the cross-correlations sign occurs due to interaction between different edge-states and does not reflect the statistics of the fermionic particles which `antibunch'.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Aphid genotypes vary in their response to the presence of fungal endosymbionts in host plants

Genetic variation for fitness-relevant traits may be maintained in natural populations by fitness differences that depend on environmental conditions. For herbivores, plant quality and variation in chemical plant defences can maintain genetic variation in performance. Apart from plant secondary compounds, symbiosis between plants and endosymbiotic fungi (endophytes) can produce herbivore-toxic compounds. We show that there is significant variation among aphid genotypes in response to endophytes by comparing life-history traits of 37 clones of the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on endophyte-free and endophyte-infected tall fescue Lolium arundinaceum. Clonal variation for life-history traits was large, and most clones performed better on endophyte-free plants. However, the clones differed in the relative performance across the two environments, resulting in significant genotype · environment interactions for all reproductive traits. These findings suggest that natural variation in prevalence of endophyte infection can contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity in aphid populations
