    From Expert Discipline to Common Practice: A Vision and Research Agenda for Extending the Reach of Enterprise Modeling

    The benefits of enterprise modeling (EM) and its contribution to organizational tasks are largely undisputed in business and information systems engineering. EM as a discipline has been around for several decades but is typically performed by a limited number of people in organizations with an affinity to modeling. What is captured in models is only a fragment of what ought to be captured. Thus, this research note argues that EM is far from its maximum potential. Many people develop some kind of model in their local practice without thinking about it consciously. Exploiting the potential of this “grass roots modeling” could lead to groundbreaking innovations. The aim is to investigate integration of the established practices of modeling with local practices of creating and using model-like artifacts of relevance for the overall organization. The paper develops a vision for extending the reach of EM, identifies research areas contributing to the vision and proposes elements of a future research Agenda

    Clinical evidence framework for Bayesian networks

    There is poor uptake of prognostic decision support models by clinicians regardless of their accuracy. There is evidence that this results from doubts about the basis of the model as the evidence behind clinical models is often not clear to anyone other than their developers. In this paper, we propose a framework for representing the evidence-base of a Bayesian network (BN) decision support model. The aim of this evidence framework is to be able to present all the clinical evidence alongside the BN itself. The evidence framework is capable of presenting supporting and conflicting evidence, and evidence associated with relevant but excluded factors. It also allows the completeness of the evidence to be queried. We illustrate this framework using a BN that has been previously developed to predict acute traumatic coagulopathy, a potentially fatal disorder of blood clotting, at early stages of trauma care

    A new damping modelling approach and its application in thin wall machining

    In this paper, a new approach to modelling the damping parameters and its application in thin wall machining is presented. The approach to predicting the damping parameters proposed in this paper eliminates the need for experiments otherwise used to acquire these parameters. The damping model proposed was compared with available damping models and experimental results. A finite element analysis and Fourier transform approach has been used to obtain frequency response function (FRF) needed for stability lobes prediction. Several predicted stable regions using both experimental and numerical FRF’s for various examples gave a good comparison.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Counci

Connectionism replaces symbol structures with distributed representations in the form of weights between units. For problems close to the architecture of the underlying machines, connectionist and symbolic approaches can make different representational commitments for a task and, thus, can constitute different theories. For complex problems, however, the power of a system comes more from the content of the representations than the medium in which the representations reside. The connectionist hope of using learning to obviate explicit specification of this content is undermined by the problem of programming appropriate initial connectionist architectures so that they can in fact learn. In essence, although connectionism is a useful corrective to the view of mind as a Turing machine, for most of the central issues of intelligence, connectionism is only marginally relevant
