Contribution of CPLEAR to the physics of the neutral kaon system

    Get PDF
We present the physics results of the CP-- and CPT--violation measurements performed by CPLEAR. CPLEAR has experimentally determined for the first time, the violation of T invariance and is able to disentangle all the CP-- and CPT--violating quantities from each other. This allows each of the CPT violating parameters to be determined with a precision of a few 10410^{-4} and, in particular, the mass and width equality between the \kn and \knb to be tested down to the level of 101910^{-19} GeV. Moreover, the precision of the CPLEAR measurements allows us to probe for the first time physics on a scale approaching the Planck mass

We review a phenomenological parametrization of an open quantum-mechanical formalism for CPT violation in the neutral kaon system, and constrain the parameters using fits to recent CPLEAR data.We review a phenomenological parametrization of an open quantum-mechanical formalism for CPT violation in the neutral kaon system, and constrain the parameters using fits to recent CPLEAR data

    The CPLEAR detector at CERN

    Get PDF
The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using K0{\rm K}^0 and Kˉ0\bar{\rm K}^0 produced by the annihilation of pˉ\bar{\rm p}'s in a hydrogen gas target. The K0{\rm K}^0 and Kˉ0\bar{\rm K}^0 are identified by their companion products of the annihilation K±π{\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.

The history of 20th century malaria control in Peru

Malaria has been part of Peruvian life since at least the 1500s. While Peru gave the world quinine, one of the first treatments for malaria, its history is pockmarked with endemic malaria and occasional epidemics. In this review, major increases in Peruvian malaria incidence over the past hundred years are described, as well as the human factors that have facilitated these events, and concerted private and governmental efforts to control malaria. Political support for malaria control has varied and unexpected events like vector and parasite resistance have adversely impacted morbidity and mortality. Though the ready availability of novel insecticides like DDT and efficacious medications reduced malaria to very low levels for a decade after the post eradication era, malaria reemerged as an important modern day challenge to Peruvian public health. Its reemergence sparked collaboration between domestic and international partners towards the elimination of malaria in Peru

RECENT RESULTS ON CP VIOLATION FROM THE CPLEAR EXPERIMENT

The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles. The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. First results in the reconstruction and analysis of the neutral kaon decays into two neutral pions and the K(e)3 decay are presented.Nuclear Physics
